Tai Pan Chinese Restaurant - lobster with "yee mein"

I was in Liverpool to spend some time with family friends after visiting London. We planned to have…read moredinner here and supposedly is one of the better Chinese restaurants in Liverpool. The parking lot is quite large, so lots of parking spots available. There is also a supermarket located in the basement floor of the restaurant. Upon entering, I noticed it looked a bit dated. All of the lights are probably very, incredibly dusty... most likely hasn't been cleaned since the day they opened. Lots of lights, but still managed to have very dim lighting. We went for the 8 course dinner set, which you can choose 8 dishes to get out of the many dishes they offer for this set. Let me preface first that I am from Boston and definitely have had New England/Maine lobster BUT I honestly never realized how good our lobsters are. The ginger scallion stir fried lobster with yee mein was a generous portion, but taste wise I couldn't get down with it. The lobster has a bad aftertaste that kind of just lingers & the yee mein was not actually even yee mein... plus could've been more flavorful. The best dishes I found they had were the duck & the soup. I think it's quite difficult to mess up on both those dishes though, to be frank. The worst dish I had here was the chicken. Everyone at our table agreed that it was extremely dry & barely edible. Cleanliness: One thing that I am always looking for and super mindful of when I first sit down to eat at a restaurant is how clean are their utensils? How clean are the plates & bowls? etc. Plates were pretty dirty, bowls were fine for soup, & utensils-- it is a good thing they do single use wooden chopsticks. Overall, their food is not great but also good Chinese food in England is either really hard to find or doesn't exist. The Chinatown in Liverpool is a ghost town and looks abandoned , so my guess is that good, authentic Chinese food must be rare to come by.

Although we usually have more than just dim sum - ordering a few as well. Whether its a rice dish, noodle dish, maybe some veg too. The quality is always pretty good and the food comes quick. The restaurant has a car park which is handy as well as the large Chinese supermarket on the ground floor.

Wow, just wow! Why can't this place be in London?!?…read more So I'm banished to Widnes for work, but all is well as I've found this lovely place in Warrington. Reasonably priced dim sum, although I don't know how it compares in price to other places in area to be fair, a good bar with proper cocktails, and live music at times if tonight is anything to go by. (Most dishes are between £3 and £4, with a "gourmet" selection on the back of the checklist that is closer to £7 a dish.) The star is admittedly the dim sum menu... it's a proper check the box dim sum menu that is luckily served at any hour... I've been to too many places that advertise as having dim sum that actually only have a dim sum starter, or worse have a good dim sum menu only available at restricted times. There's your standard fair, but also things a bit more exotics such as stuffed chillies, rib ends with garlic and chilli, asparagus with chilli and garlic, etc... and of course chicken feet, because one must. The place is clean, with a bit of a classy feel to it without being too over the top, and has a good atmosphere with really pleasant staff that do a good job of making you feel welcome. They do have a standard menu, but I doubt I'll ever be able to comment on it! :D If you're in the area for one reason or another and a fan of dim sum then you must make your way here... I already know I'll have an embarrassing amount of check-ins when I'm in town... watch this space.

Nestled within a Chinese Art Gallery lies Capitol, which might sound more like an insurance firm or a record company than somewhere you'd get crispy dim sum but bear with me, the restaurant did good. It's well located in Hamilton Square and once inside, a good eclectic buzz of both western and eastern influenced music instantly tells you, this is a place that likes to cater for everybody. The dim lighting makes it feel quite intimate and romantic, and it's not so dull that you want to get your phone out and shine the screen on what you're eating just to be sure you've got the right dish. The staff are a huge plus - polite, smiley, very chatty and rather reassuring, enquiring regularly if you're okay with everything. This is service with a smile, and it's a genuine one at that. You'd be expecting a huge menu in a Chinese restaurant, and this one delivers. If you do manage to choose, fair play to you, but with a group the obligatory buffets might well be the way forward as you'll feel like you're missing out on all sorts unless you can mix and match. Delicious, fresh, authentic and with a kick to it too and excellent presentation to boot, and once again the staff will bend over backwards to accommodate your needs. If you're lucky enough to love in the area it's a great restaurant that bears repeating, and I have it on good authority that the standards haven't faltered over the years. Super stuff.
