This lonely vegetarian outpost on the vacation-y peninsula east of Auckland was probably the most…read morestereotypical vegetarian spot I've seen in New Zealand, from the menu to the overheard conversations about digestive enzymes to the sign asking you to literally pay forwards someone's meal. I found it expensive enough paying for my own on my increasingly limited vacation budget, but the corn-based fritter I ordered, while largely inscrutable in composition, was nonetheless satisfying. I ordered some feijoa juice not knowing what it was (apparently it's South American, but New Zealanders seem to like it as I've seen it elsewhere), an intriguing concoction to be sure. If I were looking to eat something before visiting some of the remote beaches, I would want to stop here rather than taking a chance on finding something good elsewhere.

I LOVE Cafe Sola! Fabulous menu and fresh ingredients, a…read moredelight for a vegetarian like me to find. I recommend the Corn Fritters and the Ginger Crunch. A double whammy of goodness with an espresso (short black thank you) in a takeaway cup with a chocolate covered espresso bean perched on top. Mmmmwah! Bustling, busy, and a darling little outside seating area that's mostly for locals I'm guessing as they don't advertise it! Don't pass through Thames without getting your lunch here. As good a cafe you'd see anywhere in the world, I'd sit SOLA up there with London or Santa Monica for sure.

The people at my work started nick naming the people who worked here as "grouchy". Clever play on…read morenames indeed. But it all speaks the truth. I've never warmed to anyone from here. I'm often sort of snapped at with "our kitchen closed at 2" or something of that nature. Besides that I have to mention the incredible pies. Gourmet would be an understatement! They are fantastic and are often picked off the shelves quickly early in the day. I've also had the gluten free muesli from here but have to say I was disappointed with it overall as it was hugely expensive and came out looking a little sad. It tasted OK though I guess. My judgements may be completely wrong though because there are always people buzzing around here. It could be for the organic, gluten free food or it could be for the pies. I doubt it's for the service.

I've had a great sandwich there one time and another time an indifferent salad. I suppose the uncertainty of what sort of experience you're going to have keeps me coming back. They say they use lots of organic and free range ingredients here, which is good, and they don't seem to charge more than other similar cafes that don't do this. They also have a big range of gluten-free options which seem to attract lots of diners.

I could safely say that I have tried everything on the menu, but if I am to pick favourites, I would say their satay chicken, chicken cashew and laksa are my favourites. A quick tip, their little satay is meant to be smaller and cheaper than the regular one but it honestly isn't. The difference is very minor your stomach won't notice it. Every now and then I got tempted to try their starters but I was never a big fan. Their takoyaki, however is good if you like them crispy. What I love about otto woo is how it's a food genre on its own. A great option for asian fusion food. It is fresh, delicious and satisfying without making you want to roll over and sleep immediately or suffer through an hours long heartburn. They have lots of gluten free options too which I think is great (they have them listed next to the wall menu). If in doubt ask the staff, they are really sweet. Check out otto woo nuffield if you would like a good meal on the go. Their mission bay branch and ponsonby branches are more lively if you would like to sit down and eat.

Served in a noodle box with lots of vegetables and rice, it was very good but not really spicy. The prawn dumplings someone else ordered as a side looked amazing... next time!
