This was my first visit to Melrose on W. University in downtown Edinburg. I just happened to be in…read morethe shopping plaza and decided to enter and see what they have - the window signs advertise clothing for the entire family, shoes, and some household goods. The employees greeted me as I walked through the store. The store itself is not fancy, but pleasant, clean, and, since it's August in South Texas, I'll mention the air conditioning was working well. That's always a plus! I confess, I'm not in the market for women's clothing or shoes - which is the vast majority of their inventory. So, I ignored that and walked down the center aisle to the back where the men's section is. Along the way there was a table with knock-off men's fragrances with packaging that looks similar to name brands but that are spelled differently and slightly different shape to the bottle. I'm not interested in knock-offs, so I continued. They do have a small selection of men's button down shirts, polo shirts, long pants, shorts, athletic wear, underwear, etc. The boys' clothes were sort of mixed in with the men's, so you have to pay attention to that. I noticed a pair of swim trunks that had a design and color I liked. When I picked it up, the fabric felt like vinyl and "plasticky" - and ut had a mesh liner throughout the trunks. Cheap, but cheap. Yes, overall the prices were cheap at Melrose, but the clothing was also rather cheap-looking and/or feeling for the most part. But if you can't afford Macy's then shop at Target or Walmart. If you can't afford either of those, shop at Melrose. If you can't afford Melrose, there's a thrift store at the end of the shopping strip. As I started back towards the front and the door, I walked through the home goods section. There were shower curtains, phone chargers with speakers and disco lights, food storage containers (one said "Farberware"), and lots of miscellaneous stuff that probably changes according to the season. Honestly, I was unimpressed with their men's selections. From 36 years of marriage and having raised four girls, I could tell that most of their ladies' merchandise, though more plentiful, was about the same quality level as the men's. Perhaps you're looking for that pair of shoes or a blouse to match a particular outfit for a one-time event and don't need it to be durable, and have a rhinestone budget... then Melrose may be for you. But that's not me, so I probably won't be back.

They have a large variety of merchandise for the home, kitchen, some decoration items, school supplies, cleaning products, food items, candy, and more. I go there whenever I need greeting cards, wrapping paper, bows and gift bags because they have the best prices on greeting cards. Some of the items, like artificial flowers, are of poor quality, but they do have wire wreaths and other supplies for great prices. My service and check-out experience at this location has varied depending on who is working. Sometimes it is slow. Seldom warm and friendly, but, let's face it, we go to Dollar Tree looking for bargain prices.

I waked up to the register had a light on and someone in front of me, the cashier turns off the light and walks away as I'm reaching for my 3 items. UM, ok well I wish she would have said something. Most of these employees are young so maybe they just need a little training or to warm up. I proceeded to the next isle not greeted either and was given the wrong change she was young too so I hope she just needs practice and perhaps she was nervous. The other cashier next to her atleast said bye and thank you.

The Dollar General store is great for convenience and prices. Not always so great for quality of…read moreproducts offered or service. However, the selection is greater than one might imagine, especially for basic canned, boxed or refrigerated foods and for needed household items like cleaning supplies, and even a few tools, personal care and beauty, over-the-counter meds, a few office and school supplies, decorator and party supplies, and seasonal items. While they don't have hot coffee and foods like a regular convenience store, they are a store that is quite convenient. Most of the store is dedicated to offering foods, and things you would need for the kitchen. Of course, there are snack foods, sodas, milk, juices, cake mixes, basic pantry items., etc. But you will find other things that might surprise you. I found some Christmas decorations I needed for my office at a great price. It pays to go in a look around. This location has a FedEx station inside for package drop-offs. Judging from my visits, there was always a few people ahead of me at the counter, and with some customers it was slow, but it is still faster than going all the way to Walmart, especially if you just need one or two things. The parking lot is spacious and well lit at night.
