Blair WI is a place I get to visit annually for extended family. This year Blair has a new…read moreattraction, the Blair Meat Market. Suffice it to say that next year, I'll bring a cooler. If I lived in Wisconsin, I would really consider this shop for buying a butchered hall/full cow (Angus) or half/ full pig. The animals are raised by local families. Including the shop owners. The Blair Meat Market onsite butcher facilities are inspected daily by USDA. The shop is just neat. Some of their meat cuts are available in the cold case for purchase. I personally think the prices are fair for the quality of meat products available. They sell their own flavored beef sticks and summer sausages, with plenty of yummy samples available. I think I liked the Dill Pickle and Sweet Teriyaki BBQ flavored sticks the best. We were going to a softball game afterwards. A packet of the meat sticks is an excellent game snack for eating and sharing. A local man makes very nice cutting boards and cooking woodies, and they can be bought at the meat market. I bought several. Maybe they will become gifts. Maybe I'll selfishly keep them. Make a trip to this store, or call to place your big meat order. Very worthwhile!

Some of the staff here, my first time in, were a bit rude and dismissive, but every time since has been really warm, welcoming, and nice even from those same exact people. I think number one is two things but both equally the most important. You'd expect a local butcher to be quite expensive but the prices here are only about 1 dollar more than the grocery stores in the area. The other thing, also which you'd expect but would be correct in this case, is the quality of meat being WAY BETTER. This is some of the best meat I've ever cooked with and just tastes, smells, and looks so much better. I always come in for more ground beef and end up coming out with a bit more (usually at least some jerky). Truly a great place! The really amazing thing is that you can see and smell - not just taste - the difference. Store bought ground beef is so greasy and seeps out that nasty thick brownish liquid when cooking it, this doesn't, it also has a smell, this doesn't smell like anything but meat. Really great!

Overall, not a bad haul! We got there an hour before close and the bag was already ready for us. The meats come frozen so be sure to plan for that. We had a cooler bag with us, but they sell the disposable ones in store if you need one. It was enough for dinner for 12 adults and a whole litter of kids, with some meat to spare still (though we had done a lot of snacking while the food was cooking). It was the perfect package for our weekend getaway and will hit them up again if we're headed up north.

Not only did they have great in-house items but they had local cheeses, honey and wines from local producers. The Buffalo sticks and summer sausages were my absolute favorite and the bacon was soooo good. I did end up having some items shipped and they arrived in great condition even with temps in the 90s. Next time I visit I'm bringing a cooler because they have a crazy good deal on a family pack with assorted meats that's amazing and pricing you cant beat.
