I personally consider it in my Top 3 of courses I enjoy playing in the entire metro. The Golf Course of Kansas is one of the newer courses in the metro, thanks to a budding trend of land reclamation projects. In this case, an old rock quarry has been re-purposed into a golf course. As a result there are some incredible topographical features that you simply will not find on other courses around here (Stone Canyon is about the closest and honestly I don't think it compares). On this course you will find incredible elevation changes, drives over canyons to reach the fairways, challenging bunker placement, and incredible vistas (including things like old mine shafts and rock walls from the quarry. The fairways (which were in EXCELLENT shape when I played) are Zoysia, greens are bentgrass, and the rough is a combination of bluegrass & fescue in the first cut, and natural prairie grasses and plants in the second cut (good luck finding your ball if it goes in there). This course is also home to some of my favorite holes to play in the city. First off is #3, which is a Par 3. You are setup to shoot over a gap onto an island style green. The left is protected by a rock wall leftover from the quarry and the front and right is a sheer drop off to the old quarry below , which is now flooded with water. An old mineshaft is also visible from both the tee box and the green. You can go a bit long and be safe, though not by much, or you can shank it left and have it still kick off the rock and wind up putting for birdie. Next up is #8, which is in my top 3 Par 5s for the metro (the others being #17 on the Outlaw at Paradise Pointe and #14 on the back nine of this course). The hole is over 600yds from most tee boxes. You start of with a monster drive across a quarry canyon that's filled in with native grasses. The fairway is 220+ from most tee boxes. If you're a big hitter you can opt to cut the corner but there is a bunker protecting that shot so you have to be accurate and lucky. Then the hole doglegs hard left and runs downhil before running back uphill to the green! It's an incredible challenge to reach in three and stay on the green which has steep run-offs in all directions. The other hole I really love is #14. It's another Par 5 with a dogleg right. The tee box is elevated and you essentially shooting down into a canyon. The left side is guarded by a 60 foot rock face that runs the entire length of the hole, so if you have a draw, your ball is going to kick back in (though the rocks will tear it up). To the right is a 15ft rock face, though there is a decent amount of trees that will challenge you to keep your fade under control. What's so awesome about this hole is really the view. It starts at the tee box and just keeps you in awe the entire ride to the green. I must also mention Hole #13 is of note as one of the better Par 4s in the area. It features a tiered fairway and a green surrounded by water and woods. You better be on your game to try and reach this one in 2. The Golf Club of Kansas also features a driving range that is open year round (due to heated booths), full instruction (which I haven't used), and putting and chipping practice greens (that also include practice bunkers to hit out of (something I don't see a lot of). For the frugal golfer like me The Golf Club of Kansas can be a bit pricey. I'd personally like to see dynamic tee times available, either through Teequest.com and/or GolfNow.com, or use the dynamic fee approach that Stone Canyon Golf Club uses. Since I can only play about once a week a membership at any course isn't really feasible for me (however I will note the membership rates here are pretty damn good and it's on my list when it does become feasible for me). My next challenge for this course is to get into a tournament there. I think it would be an absolute blast. I highly recommend this course to any golfer. I brought my dad here to play last year in the fall and he still talks about it to his friends back home. Hopefully I can make it out a few more times this year to play.

Backside is not as tight, but rolling hills, keep offering all the challenges any golfer would want. The wind can change this course considerably, the greens are in great shape and fair, minus some sloping from back to front, where a putt past the hole can end up in the fairway. The traps could really use some TLC, as there's hardly any sand in some. This can be typical of public courses in the area. No GPS on the carts, so it's old school 150 and 100 yard stakes. If the price is right, you'll enjoy spending 4 hours fighting the challenges of sunflower hills.

It was remodeled in 2003 and now has Zoysia fairways which is AWESOME! Anytime you can play on Zoysia you have a better lie. You just have to be able to play the fairway ;) The greens range from small to large and the only downside is that late in the summer the greens start to get a little disease and discoloration. Most people repair their divots so you can play a good line to the hole. I would not recommend walking this course on a hot day. 7001 yards is no joke on this course. There are a lot of hills and you will be exhausted by the 12th hole. Other than that, it is a great place to play.
