I actually went to purchase an ornament from a very small collection at a different store and the cashier quietly suggested that I needed to go to Tannenbaum's as they had the most amazing selection. She was not wrong. Not only can you deck out any type of Christmas tree you wish to have, they had a whole section that was very specific to door County and specific locations that they hand paint in the store. Of course, the one we selected had to be representative of sister Bay, Al Johnson's, and the goats as these are some of our most favorite memories from this trip. The gentleman working in the store was super friendly and helpful. Definitely put this one on your list so you can pick up a unique souvenir. They've also done incredible Work with the front entrance floral being so very welcoming. It says they are open 10 to 5 every day of the week. We were here on a Sunday.

We sat outside and listened for our name to be called as we enjoyed the view of the water across the street. Name called, seated at a table in a full dining area, and we watched the staff do a very specific dance, each person with a clear responsibility to keep the customers happy and moving along quickly. One woman was obviously in charge and kept other staff on task very well. We ordered the Swedish Pancake Special with scrambled egges and sausages, which was done perfectly all across the plates. The Oatmeal was a large serving, with cream and brown sugar. The dish of lingonberries was nice for us to try as we wished. They do not have any specialty coffees, which was a surprise, but fine, considering there is a fantastic coffee shop next door. (See my review for Happy Coffee.). The biggest thing to note was how fast we were served our meals; from ordering to being served was no more than 5 minutes. And yet the food did not taste like quantity cooking, each dish tasting fresh and not reheated. If you are hoping for a slow and easy breakfast, go elsewhere. Al Johnson's wants the huge waiting list to move quickly, and you are encouraged to "keep 'er movin". The wait for a table was longer than the meal itself. When we left the line was even longer, and by 11:00 AM the outdoor areas of the restaurant were packed. Plan your day accordingly. Our two meals totaled $25 before tip. The servers work hard and quickly and deserve a nice tip. No goats on the roof, but that's OK. Just seeing grass up there is interesting, and I would rather they treat the goats well than worry about my entertainment.

The service was rushed and the manner of the hostesses where you come in and where you pay is abysmal. No, really. I've never felt more like cattle in my life. The sour, amazingly unfriendly hostesses act annoyed you're even there the moment you walk in. No smile. No greeting. Only "What do you want? Stand there. Come this way." My wife apparently stepped too far past the host station and instead of, "I can take care of you there," the woman--without speaking a word and with a very annoyed expression on her face--walked in my wife's path and virtually pushed her in the direction she needed to be. After being rushed through our average meal, the person taking our money (all Al Johnson's wants) asked nothing about our meal, said no friendly word, made no eye contact, said no "enjoy your day" or "thanks for stopping in," only silently took the receipt and acted like it was an unwelcome interruption that I dared to even be standing there. I've been coming here since the mid-90s and wow has it changed. This place made their name with the Swedish pancakes and goats on the roof. They don't care anymore and they don't need to. You are a dollar sign and they will continue to be packed regardless. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. If you want a Door County classic, go to Julie's Cafe in Fish Creek. They're super friendly there and they aren't too big for their britches. Al Johnson's is a washed up, sub-par tourist attraction, one we will never be going back to nor recommending to anyone.

The shop is known for its Almond Cake and serves delicious samples. One can purchase the special cake pan and recipe book. I love the smell of lavender. It reminds me of sleepovers at my grandmother's. We would have…read morecookies and milk before bed then she would tuck me in while leaving the TV on so I could watch the Muppets. Her bedroom always smelled like lavender which is probably why I always slept so well there. Every time I smell lavender I think of her. As soon as we walked into Island Lavender thoughts of my grandma came rolling in. The whole shop smell amazing! There was every type of lavender product you could imagine and those I had never even dreamed of. I had to stop myself from buying one of everything. I did go home with Caramel Lavender popcorn, Lavender Lemonade, Lavender Cream Cheese, Lavender lip gloss, and an assortment of Lavender truffles. I could have spent all day there, but it's probably good we stopped on our way back to the ferry because I probably would have spent quite a bit more. The most unique thing I purchased was the Lavender Chocolates. I chose different flavors and they were all delicious. Just outside the door of the market they had these fun pictures you could pose in and this has to be my favorite pic of Leslie and I.

But the owners were here with their infant when we stoped in just after opening on Sunday morning, and told us a bit of their story. Apparently the father of one of them started making lotion some years ago, and after a while they looked into lavender when trying to decide what they wanted to focus on for their family. Apparently the pH of the soil in Door County is perfect for this crop, so they planted over 5,000 lavender plants and started their empire. This sweet shop has just about anything you could want that's lavender-related. I'm sure most folks think of cosmetics and toiletries, which they have in abundance as you might expect. Lavender is actually not high on my list of favorite flowers or herbs because it is usually far too overpowering for me, but some of the lotions and potions they sell lean toward the mild side scent-wise, so if you have a similar sensitivity you may still find something you like. In addition to foods and toiletries, they also sell gifts, art, and household items as well. They've developed their own lavender lemonade; I love lavender lemonade so I bought five bottles and was not disappointed. What will be disappointing is finishing up the remaining bottles I brought home. They said they are working on getting it into some stores, such as Whole Foods (which might make me shop there). I came specifically to pick up some culinary lavender. I haven't ever used it before, but lavender lemonade is a favorite in the summer and I've been thinking about trying to make a simple syrup. Since this area is somewhat known for lavender, it seemed like the best place to get some to stock my kitchen cupboard. What they had here in the shop was picked three days prior by the proprietors themselves. I'll dry it out a bit longer and then debud it so it's ready to go when I feel like trying my hand at something new. Luckily, they also sell simple syrup here so i got that as a backup too--or alternatively I now can use the lavender buds for something else besides just making syrup. When I was telling the owner about my plans and excitement to try using the lavender in some cooking, they were kind enough to sneak in a second bundle of it. They have a partnership with a local confectioner that makes truffles with their lavender. I picked up three to take home--hopefully they'll make it!--and they were beautifully made. I also got a lavender shortbread cookie, which I took home to my significant other and heard it was excellent. This shop is worth a visit on your trip to Door County; even if you're not sure if you'd find something here, you might well be surprised, and it's a great place for gifts.

It is a mix of "touristy" stuff like paper cocktail napkins with joke sayings on them and nicer things. The outdoor area is particularly nice with interesting glass garden art that I think would work best if you lived somewhere without too much wildlife...or storms...but it is fun to look at! The layout is a little maze-like, but that's sort of part of the fun in my opinion...the store just keeps going and going and going... Definitely worth going here rather than one of the purely "touristy items" places if you're looking for something to do on a day when the weather isn't fabulous!

Their selection is so vast, I could wander for hours and admire the wares. I had to pick up some Swedish Candy, of course, although the chocolates had to stay on the shelf due to the 100-degree heat outside. But Salty licorice and Bubs skulls came home with me. Delicious. I was most excited to find that they carry clothing. I bought a couple of dresses by Paapii, a Finnish brand. They make comfy dresses and tunics in all kinds of cute patterns. Everyone at the store was so friendly and willing to help out. The dressing room was occupied for a while, so they offered to let me try on my outfits in the ladies room instead. My haul ended up being quite pricey, but that is not Skal's fault. Their prices are rather reasonable in my opinion, I just...bought a lot of stuff. Be warned, you might too!

My friend is from Sweden, and she was over the moon about the authentic candy and really excited to see some of the clothing brands they had. I, on the other hand, got totally distracted by all the adorable gifts and knick-knacks. Every display was so thoughtfully arranged. Seriously, it felt like walking into a Pinterest board. The clerks were kind and helpful, and it had that warm, welcoming vibe that makes you want to linger. The prices were very reasonable, considering we were in such a touristy area. I picked out a Christmas ornament as a souvenir, and I know I'll smile every time I hang it on the tree. Such a sweet little stop. Everyone should check them out if they are in Door County, WI!
