I've found where you should be, and it's Berliner Doner. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? There is seemingly always a line a Berliner Doner, and that was the case even on a windy and intermittently rainy Sunday evening when there were seemingly no other people in the entire city of Vienna. Fortunately, the line at Berliner moves real quick, and even ten deep you'll have your food within twenty minutes tops. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? I genuinely cannot get over the price points at Berliner. My standard chicken doner sandwich was, wait for it, €3,50. That's it. That's all. That's the tweet. I obviously should have gone double meat for one euro more, but in summary is the best deal in town full stop. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? And just like that it all came together. The fresh pita, the flavorful chicken, the fantastic peripherals with red and white sauces that could easily rival any high quality stand in London or New York or Los Angeles. Not a huge selection of items, but what they do have is very filling, and includes different sauces to spice it up, if you like. The drinks menu, though, is pretty extensive. Downsides: There's little room to sit inside, which discourages big groups. Not a problem in summer, though, since they set up tables on the sidewalk. The service is another story. The servers tend to push by without apology and can be unfriendly and impatient. But I go to Maschu for the food, not to chat up the waiter, so this doesn't bother me. This is only the servers - the two guys who cook and work behind the counter (one also sometimes serves) are always friendly and quick to laugh. I DO go to chat with them. :) Also, watch the prices: The menu items on the Neubaugasse site can sometimes be a few more euros than the same items at the Schwedenplatz location.

There are a few seats inside (mostly all taken...) as well as some more outside during the warm season - it's a pleasure to eat dinner here outside on warm spring evenings after my classes. I find it interesting that they usually don't expect you to pay right away - they want you to first enjoy the meal and then come back to pay. One of the guys told me that it's because in case I didn't like it I wouldn't have to pay. I'm not really sure if he meant it but they really do care whether you like their food. I think they simply want to make it seem more like a restaurant where you pay at the end and also I believe it is important for them to have the connection to their customers and ask whether everything was OK.
