Supermarket chains like Netto can save you a boat load if you weren't on a company expense and you're out buying your food and drinks. Prices can seem high in Denmark at first, but this is when you are served by a waiter.

A Danish discount supermarket brand, Netto has over 600 locations in Denmark, opening its first…read morelocation in Copenhagen in 1981. Currently, it is part of the Sailing Group, the largest retailer in Denmark. I stopped in at this location (closest grocery store to my hotel) on my last night in Copenhagen, wanting to pick up some cans of Tuborg (the 2nd most popular beer in Denmark, and not easily accessible in the States). By this time, I was used to the very high prices for food in Denmark, so was pleasantly surprised that each can came out to about a dollar in US currency, when bought as a six pack (the Gron Turborg was slightly higher price than the classic). I noted that a 1.5 liter of bottled water was only $.78. The store did charge a 0,81DKK credit card fee, which was the first time I saw it during my trip.

Good supermarket, like the rest of Føtex chain in Copenhagen…read more This one is rather large and is inside the Herlev Bymidte "shopping mall". They have pretty much everything (clothing, shoes to other normal supermarket goods). They have also packed salads and sell smørrebrød that they make themselves on their kitchen, as well as good butcher, good bread section and pretty wide fruit and vegetable selection. The packed salads and the smørrebrød are very useful for us since our office is nearby and for us who don't sign up for the lunch service at the canteen, it's convenient when you don't have your lunch packs with you. They also carry lactose-free, dairy-free and vegetarian products, so it's pretty cool supermarket. Only three or four cashier points are manned, the rest is self checkout, which is easier for us who have less items in our shopping bag. It also houses a separated baker (again, convenient for the office people who have to pick up morning bread on Fridays) and a post office. They have also apparently laundry service.

This teeny tiny store houses the best selection of Greek food in Malmö. The owners (a married…read morecouple) have run the store for decades. You feel like coming home to a couple of friends upon entering. The lady recognises you and if you have kids with you they always get to taste an olive of a dried apricot. If you like me love to spend summer weeks in Greece you'll recognise a lot of the brands in the store as you pick out the perfect piece of feta cheese or the plumpest olives or some of Vaia's home made phyllo pastries. Highly recommended. Bring cash because they don't take charge cards.

You can definitely get prepared foods here, water, juices, salted licorice, fresh veggies and fruits (they didn't look great), and your usual grocery items here. It wasn't the nicest Føtex I visited while in Denmark, but if you needed a grocery store in a touristy part of town, you can come here.

They have fine cheeses, wine, deli items, herbs in pots, craft beer, desserts, etc. Bring a shopping bag with you or don't buy too many items because they don't have plastic/paper bags for your stuff. You can also buy a variety of organic and natural foods. I'd like to think that Irma caters to a discriminate city clientele, similar to Whole Foods shoppers in California so be prepared to spend money here. I roamed the aisles for a good hour (slow brain reflexes plus indecisiveness) until I decided on what to snack on: a fancy lobster dip and a bag of knäckebröd (thin crispy bread) So delicious! I strongly recommend grocery shopping at high end super markets while stoned on pot.

Let's say that there were times when fakta was far from my (budget) supermarket choice, but now…read morethose times have passed. Although they claim to be budget, they do have lots of good items, also specialised items for people with special allergy (lactose-intolerant me), celiac disease and so on. Vegetables and fruit shelves are pretty decent and so is their dairy fridge. Obviously their selection cannot be compared to the next door Kvickly, but I guess fakta has their own customers and so does Kvickly. I do rather go to Kvickly for certain items because they have more varied goods to offer but I go here too when fakta has special offer for their organic items (which they often do!) Another reason that I like to go here is because they have long opening hours (8-22) while Kvickly is just until 20. It's very useful when I finish pilates class at 20.00 and I need to shop for food, then Fakta is the only one open. Both are owned by Coop chain, so I guess they don't really compete with each other.
