Unique Boutique located in downtown Okeechobee is a treasure trove of highly sought after antique…read moreand vintage pieces. This store sells their own items and also rents out booth space to other vendors. The selection of items spans several rooms and include clothing, furniture, home goods, knick-knacks, collectibles, holiday decorations, art, jewelry, accessories, quilts, and so much more. If you collect it, they have it! I stopped in on my way to the Perch Festival but you could easily spend a few hours here. They had a set of my grandmother's Royal Rose dishes that I inherited, the vintage Pyrex in the turquoise blue I love, and a muffin cup in the Temptation Old World Green I collect. They also had a highly collectible set of Merry Mushroom set of canisters from the 1970's. The ladies working on the day I visited were very nice. I didn't end up purchasing anything because the prices were higher than I was willing to pay. I pick up a lot of these pieces inexpensively at thrift store or yard sales. The Royal Rose dishes especially are everywhere. It is more difficult to find vintage Pyrex especially in pink and turquoise with the lids but this is now so popular, it is pricing me out. The prices here are firm and equivalent to what you would expect to pay on Ebay. I was on the hunt for more of a bargain but it was still fun to explore the Unique Boutique.

Such a wonderful selection of vintage items and handmade items/small businesses. This store seems…read moreto go on forever with the multiple rooms and countless sections. It's quite organized and you could easily spend hours looking at everything. Great assortment from furniture, clothes, accessories (purses, belts, jewelry, etc.), shoes, homewares, decor, and everything under the sun for a kitchen. Prices are pretty good and the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. If you ever have questions, they will definitely help!

The items were then given to the people who worked on them or were resold. Goodwill's philosophy is "a hand up, not a hand out". Today Goodwill has become a $5 billion nonprofit organization that provides job training, employment, and community programs for people who have disabilities that might prevent them from getting a job on their own. I was in the area so I decided to check out this Goodwill in Sebring. It was completely different than any other Goodwill I have been to. They still had the same racks of clothes I am used to but they also carried a wide range of brand new household decor items including art, rugs, and decorations. One large part of the store was roped off and it contained hundreds of brand new Halloween costumes in bags. It was a far cry from the one rack of used mismatched costume pieces I have seen Goodwill stores carry in the fall. This store also carries brand new mattresses. This Goodwill resembled more of a Big Lots than the Goodwills I am used to. The prices were on par with those of discount retailer Big Lots as well. They even sell snacks up front. I inquired about what they sell and was told it was new and thrift items. The new items had been donated to them. I don't know if this store is unique or the way Goodwill wants to move in the future. Everything was clean and displayed nicely. I really wanted to find out more about this store but unfortunately they were getting ready to close for the night. If I lived in Sebring I would be a regular customer at this store.

He came up with the idea for a charity in response to a fellow classmates question, what is your church doing for the poor? The group chose St. Vincent de Paul, patron saint of the poor for their name and under the guidance of Sister Rosalie Rendu, they increased the number of people they were able to help. Volunteers of the organization are called Vincentians. The charity spread from France to Europe. In 1845 they established in the United States in St. Louis, Missouri. The organization is now world wide in 150 countries with 750,000 members. I have visited a number of Vincent De Paul Society thrift stores throughout Florida and they have always been a great place to find a bargain. In this building there is the thrift store and an area for client services. Proceeds from this thrift store is used to provide a food pantry, clothing, rent, and utilities to those in need. They are working towards building a neighbor aid center on land that was purchased adjacent to the thrift store. Their goal is to raise $1,000,000 for construction costs and for the furnishings needed in the building. They are seeking donations of any amount to make this dream happen. This thrift store has a nice selection of small appliances, clothing, accessories, art, books, and household goods on the main floor. There is also a downstairs with books and larger pieces of furniture. On the day I visited everything over $1 was 50 percent off so prices were quite good. Higher end items like designer name clothes are sold on their Ebay store page. This is a wonderful charity that is working towards helping even more people in this community. Please consider supporting them if you are able.
