Dating back to as early as 1932 when it was originally known as Joplin Cemetery even before the city was officially incorporated. In September 1873, Mayor E.R. Moffet signed a document releasing the cemetery to the public for public use, making it Joplin's first municipal cemetery
Fairview Cemetery is the final resting place for many notable individuals, including city founders, veterans from various wars, and members of prominent families such as the Murphy, Picher, and Zelleken families. It also contains sections for Masons, the Order of the Eastern Star, Oddfellows, Shriners, and Woodsman.
It is a lawn style cemetery and is in reasonable condition. Headstones appear intact, it is driveable and many of the gravesites appear to be taken care of.
