Despite lying just off one of the busiest retail stretches in the city, Byres Road, this category A…read morelisted building is rarely seen by visitors on account of its partially-hidden location on leafy Observatory Road. A great pity; given it's one of the m ost beautiful the city has to offer, particularly when it's lit at night. With a small but loyal congregation, this church is beautifully maintained and also offers facilities to several groups in the surrounding areas of Hillhead and Dowanhill. The recently restored stained glass windows are breathtaking and, alone, are well worth visiting for when the church opens it doors on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Even the flagpole in Queens Park has three and it's just a flagpole! Tucked inbetween Saltoun Street, Observatory Road and Grosvenor Terrace, the church is literally a stone's throw from Byres Road but has a hidden feel. The architecture is simply stunning; modelled on Sainte Chapelle in Paris and completed in 1876, the imposing stained glass windows circle the building, illustrating different events in Jesus' life. A great little post office and general stores, I called in there today to send a parcel. The staff…read morewere very pleasant and helpful and I ended up buying several things I'm so easily tempted to spend money!! For a small shop it has a good range of things, from groceries and confectionery to greetings cards and postcards of Glasgow, to magazines and newspapers. You can play the national lottery here or have some photocopying done; there's a Bureau de Change within the post office area and a passport photo service offered too. There's a large car park just down the side to the left of the shop which is very handy because it's almost impossible to park on the main road.

In 2002 a new stained glass window was added. There are Covenanters' graves, which are historically very interesting, to be seen in the adjacent churchyard. This church is close to The Cross in the heart of the town, standing today in a pedestrianised cobble-stoned side street. It is one of the main landmarks of Kilmarnock and I find it a very attractive building. Church services there are currently on Sundays at 11.00am and also at 9.30am from June to August.
