William eventually became an architect in Glasgow but Robert stayed in Kilmarnock. He later designed the Burns Monument and the Dick Institute. When Grange Church first opened it was described as a handsome cruciform structure with a spire of 140ft. There are 860 sittings and a hall and classroom to the E has accommodation for 500 people. A memorial stone can be found below the arch on the left side of the window above the entrance to the church. There is a steel bell in the tower which is thought to be the largest in the country. Corrosion makes deciphering the date on the side difficult, but it is thought to read '1867'. The stained glass window behind the pulpit was donated in 1896 by Miss M. Taylor in memory of her father, William Taylor. In 1902, an organ was added and it continued in use until 2009. I don't know how long it has been since this church stopped being used for worship as I see that it is now closed up and there are signs outside which state that it is now for sale or to rent. It will be interesting to see what happens to it in future.

Inside there's a panelled timber gallery on three sides supported by cast iron columns. The pews are made of wood. A pair of decorative, curved, staircases lead to a carved wooden pulpit. There are diamond leaded windows with colourful borders and images. Found on the north side of the High Street between Avenue Square and Hamilton Gardens.

A church is thought to have stood on this site as early as 1157, but the major part of the building was created in the 13th century. What remains today is still very impressive. It stands on St. Marnock Street between the Police Station on the left and the Sheriff Court on the right. There is also a famous Carillon of 30 bells which was installed in the tower in memory of Peter Wills and his daughters, Maggie and Mary. It is one of only a few carillons in Scotland and is ranked 12th in the United Kingdom. The bells are found just under the roof and played on a keyboard on a lower floor. This is another church I've noticed in the town recently (it's hard to miss it!!) and yet another one I'd like to photograph again to get some better results when time permits.

It's right across from the Necropolis so you can do both stops easily. The walk over is very nice and when we went in spring there were cherry blossoms and pleasant old couples strolling in their kilts in the early morning. Inside has some of the most spectacular lighting design I've seen in an old church. Easily cinematic, I can see why it is used as a filming location. The streak of lights and shadows are a sight to behold on the old stone. There is a nice crypt if you keep going straight that is lit with spotlights and has a more dark and sonvet atmosphere than the main church. There is also a side chapel with great carved wood and stained glass that is worth checking out. I would save some time to walk around outside, we saw some amazing things outside such as an old cemetery and the masonry is much easier to see and appreciate when lit up with natural light.
