Siena Baldi - D'lish at the Beach mural surrounded by tropical plants

    Siena Baldi

We commissioned Siena to create a mural for our beachside cafe & bar at Iroquois Point and let me…read moretell you we were not disappointed! The whole process from start to finish was seamless, we collaborated on the design and within days she had a rendering ready for us and started work the very next weekend, working from early in the morning until late in the day, and she completed the job earlier than scheduled and it was exactly the same as the rendering. In short Siena was professional, on time (actually early) and delivered exactly what she promised, you've gotta love that In a sea of people who over promise and under deliver Siena is a gem, I highly recommend her.

With our color theme in mind, she did thumbnail sketches in pencil, offering us 8 options to get a sense of what overall feel we liked. From the thumbnail, she worked up an entire composition to the scale of our door. We got to see a couple of color variations as it was in process and loved the one she landed on. I asked to come along when she purchased paint and watching her work from her design with the paint swatches in hand was a delight. She put together the perfect palette and her knack for getting just the right color was obviously a developed skill. Seeing her freehand the design onto the garage door was a marvel - I imagined there must be projectors involved, but she was able to transfer the design just using the panels of the door as a grid. Working diligently from morning to evening, it took three days to finish the mural and at the end, it was exactly like the mockup she had provided! Absolutely incredible experience, I am filled with joy every time I approach my garage.

Thornburg works out of 201 Studios, an up-and-coming industrial space that houses a wide variety of folks from artists to media to mechanical sorts and a whole lot more. This is his second space and this particular space gives him room to really grow and experiment. Before Thornburg became an artist, I had the benefit of his gifts in everything from household assistance to wheelchair repairs. He's one of those people who seems gifted at just plain figuring things out. He's won a variety of prizes and you can see one of his projects right now in the windows at the Harrison Center. It's not uncommon to see his works around town - especially when an exhibit seems to have an industrial or technical theme. He's hilariously inventive at taking seemingly odd objects and turning them into something cohesive and wonderful. While most of Thornburg's creations happen organically, he has and does take commissioned projects. I tend to be a fan of all things industrial and Dave Thornburg is one of Indy's true up-and-coming artists. If you get a chance, I'd definitely check out his works.
