Not open when they say they are. Got here at 5pm on Monday. No signage saying why they were closed.

My mind is blown. When I was a little girl, there were plenty of real fabric stores, but for…read moredecades now I've lived in places where the only option is JoAnn's -- which is better than nothing but not by much. Mill End is GIGANTIC and they have every kind of fabric you can think of -- woolens, silks, athletic fabric, canvas, corduroy (when's the last time you found corduroy in a fabric store?), seersucker, etc etc etc. and they have a HUGE selection of notions -- every kind of zipper, cording, elastic, buckles, buttons... Every employee was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I will be back more often than I should!

Sure do miss Joann. Mill End has a massive amount of fabric including tons of vintage patterns but…read moremost of the bolts are NOT marked with who the manufacturer is and other important info. I went in for Marine Vinyl. Very limited selection of colors and brands unknown. Staff said "they are basically all the same" which is NOT true. Marine Vinyl brands vary in their attempt to be less toxic. Can't know what I'm buying if the stores don't know. For custom orders, they have gazillions of choices but you have to request a call from the buyer and see if those fabrics are even in stock anymore to purchase. Inventory is just not updated, not well marked, and staff have very limited knowledge. In the upholstery section, the staff TRIED to help but couldn't answer basic questions like "Which upholstery fabrics, other than velvet, won't pill over time." Twill pills like mad. Staff didn't know that. They aren't experts. JoAnn staff didn't know a lot about fabric either but at least it was cheaper. An overhaul would be epic.

Boersma's has a huge selection of fabric. What I have noticed lately is that the colors of fabrics are drifting towards "dull." I quilt with bright fabrics and they are becoming hard to find at Boersma's. I prefer to shop in a physical store rather than online, but with the closing of so many fabric/quilt shops there are limited choices of where to go. If Boersma's does not stock bright fabrics, I may need to turn to the internet. Shopping for fabric on the internet is iffy. I have received some wonderful fabrics with colors and patterns that I love, but I have also received some fabrics that had I seen in person, I would not have purchased. I really like Boersma's, but need more variety in brightness of fabrics.

I love coming here and I'm so grateful that I found Boersma. Originally I just had my old-fashioned…read moresewing machine service here once I bought it and a few years ago I brought a vacuum cleaner here, but since then so much has opened up to me. I found my wonderful Sewing Teacher here and I've been quilting for a year and a half and sewing with her. I have almost finished three quilts and I'm going to do one more. I also was able to come here and get all my backing, batting and border materials for my quilts and I found that they have once a month class for quilting where I will be coming shortly to get instruction on hand quilting since it's pretty rare and you can't seem to find people to help you do that but they do here. Boersma is a wonderful old Sewing Center that has everything they even have vintage machines for sale which is right up my alley. I skip two Joanna's when I drive to here. I only go here for my main supplies!
