This is my favorite fitness studio of all time, bar none. I LOVE the workouts - there's so much variety so it doesn't feel routine. Each day of the week has a theme - Mondays and Wednesdays are cardio- focused, Tuesdays and Thursdays are strength- focused, Fridays are a hybrid, and Saturday is an anything- goes, all- out killer that also happens to be 60 minutes (all other classes are 45 minutes, with a 3- 5 minute core finisher tacked on at the end). The owner, Ami, is ALWAYS adding new equipment, so you can go heavy and/ or use cutting edge fitness machines. The coaches at this studio are the cream of the crop. They're all crazy fit and will learn your personal fitness level, so they can encourage and push you in a way that feels personalized to you. Along those lines, they will also learn any nagging injuries you may have, so they'll make suggestions for alternative options to help you to avoid aggravating them. As an added bonus, they're all super cool people, so they make you feel right at home from the get- go. Arguably the biggest benefit this studio offers is the sense of community. I moved to the peninsula a few years ago and have made a ton of friends from going to F45, which was great because I didn't know anyone else in the immediate vicinity. Intense workouts with top- of- the- line equipment? Awesome coaches? Great community? Sign me up!! And you should, too. read more

I just joined F45 and LOVE it! I have tried all workouts like Barrys, Soul Cycle, Orange Theory, been a member of Equinox and Crunch and more and this just fits exactly what I need! Two years in, F45 San Mateo has completely changed my life. Like I mentioned in my previous review, I struggle with waking up in the morning and used to work out only in the evenings. Ever since joining F45, I went through a complete lifestyle change. I'm now a regular at the 7am class every weekday, and switching to a morning routine has done wonders for my physical and mental health. Working out used to be a chore for me, but now I look forward to class every morning and crave for that post workout endorphins. I love how the gym here is spacious, clean, and well maintained. The coaches are friendly and *really* care. They come around to correct your form, and often push you to work harder and out of your comfort zone because they know you can do it. I've visited multiple F45 gyms around the world when I travel, and nothing compares to my home gym at F45 San Mateo. In fact, I recently moved and one of the key criteria for my new place was that it had to be within a short driving distance to the gym. Sure, the membership dues might be a little steep compared to the larger chains offering low monthly dues, but keep in mind that you're coming here for a small group class, and getting focused attention from the coaches (kinda like group personal training). Also, if you're like me and come for class 5-7 times a week, the cost per class economics really works out. Honestly, F45 is my life now, and I cannot recommend it enough! This review is long overdue. I joined F45 in March 2017 and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. My first F45 class ever was Hollywood on a Saturday and I think I was sore for a week. I continued with the free trial and was sold after the first workout. As a long time 5am'er there's no better reason to wake up that early than a F45 workout. The coaches are constantly working hard to make sure you are getting the most of your workout and pushing you to lift heavier and get stronger while celebrating accomplishments both big and small. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If it wasn't for F45 I wouldn't have met the amazing group of members that have now become lifelong friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What other place can keep going despite the pandemic. From working outside in the CVS parking lot to having workouts available on zoom there isn't anything Ami (the owner and glue of F45 San Mateo) can't do. The gym is clean, organized with so many options for weights any fitness level can be accommodated. I could go on and on about the many reasons why F45 San Mateo is the best gym out there but this place is guaranteed to make you stronger and overall a better person. I had been looking to get back to my In person training routine and checked out a couple of different places. One of my former trainers and a couple of people I worked out with at my previous facility suggested F45 in San Mateo. They have a $25 three consecutive day special in you live with 10 mile of the location. I started on a Thursday and was greeted by Coach Leslie. She explained the procedure for the workouts and introduced to a few of the other people. Although there are some things I cannot do, there are modifications. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. I've been a member of this gym for the past 5 years and couldn't be happier with the experience. Ami, Leslie, Patrick, Dave and others are all great instructors! They manage to keep the intensity high throughout the whole session and help correct form whenever required! Their workouts are killer but I've never felt like taking a day off! Good gym, equipment is always clean and in good condition. Classes are well sized and plenty of space for everyone to do their workout. A little pricey compared to the some other popular group training classes, but I guess they make up for it in the quality of their classes! read more

The older I get, the harder it is to hold onto strength, balance, and mobility - and I'm a lifelong athlete and yogi. I wanted F45 resistance / strength days as supplements to my current cardio routine. My first F45 class was on October 11th. It took me several weeks, attending two to three times per week, to feel capable with the tools and comfortable moving in the space. I have a hearing impairment (aids in both ears), so it can be challenging to not lip read (masks) while in a fast paced environment with lots of moving bodies and loud music playing while learning how to lift properly with an appropriate yet challenging weight in the 60 seconds or less at each station. It was a lot. I try to get to class a little earlier to foam roll and review the screens showing how to do each exercise. The coaches who I have taken classes from Ami, Aimee, Leslie, and Dave are highly skilled, incredibly motivating, and so inspiring. During class, they correct form and suggest different weights, if needed. Have to say, lifting a weighted bar while reverse lunging and moving the body in a different plane is incredibly humbling. At turkey dinner last night family, who I hadn't seen IRL since October 9th (two days before taking my first F45 class), commented on how fit I looked. I should note that this is a fit family - brother is a marathoner, sister is a gym rat, nieces are elite athletes, brother-in-law played D1 tennis, cousin played D1 football. Non-scale victory that was so unexpected yet pleasantly surprising. If you can afford to take F45 classes, go. At the very least, take the intro classes and get a sense of functional fitness training at its best. read more

Most coaches that go here quit. Owner teaches all the classes because even if she is not coaching the class she still coaches. Cannot really take a class for a specific instructor because she is usually coaching over her coaches. Working out is hard to do. Showing up is not easy, but going to the gym where someone does not give you space to meet your own personal goals is even harder. There is coaching and their is dictating. The workout is great, but not good enough to deal with an owner . Try it out for yourself but going there for a few years and always hoped for improvement. I have regularly attended classes at F45 for about a month now, and these workouts are awesome. The exercises are challenging, efficient, and fun. No two days are alike, but you'll always do some form of burpees in every class. And although these classes are outdoors in a huge tent, I have worked out on exercise bikes, rowing machines, barbells, and kettlebells. They don't skimp. And, Ami is simply amazing. She is superwoman. At a time when I could not find an outdoor gym to attend, Ami was making her outside gym possible, rain or shine. Her positive attitude is inspiring and contagious. This is a long overdue review. I joined this F45 studio back in July 2022 after a year-long hiatus from another location. I moved from Hawaii to California and wanted to find an F45 gym to join. I've been to several F45 locations in both states, and while all of them provide the same community-like feel and awesome workouts, what Ami (the owner and coach) does at this studio is unlike any other I've experienced. From the moment you step in, you are greeted and, if new, given a brief orientation of the studio, workout, and equipment. Towels are provided which is not a norm at other studios. The rarities of how Ami runs this studio continues. At the stations, each person has their own set of weights to workout with. (From someone who's had to "fight" for weights because there's three people at a station, I find this VERY helpful and much appreciated.) To add, there's thought put into what is provided at the stations. For example, if it's a station that requires push-ups, mats are there for those who may need to be on their knees. Ami constantly wants her members to be pushed and to grow; hence, a variety of weights and updated equipment are provided for those looking for that extra push. Equipment and floors are clean. During the demos, the coaches always provide a modified option as well as point out how to do an exercise properly so as to avoid injury. All coaches constantly float the room and observe members by either providing assistance or pushing them to go further. I could go and on about how amazing Ami and the other coaches are! While there are many F45 studios out there, I truly believe this place is special and unique because of how Ami and the coaches care about their members! read more

One star for the actual workouts and the other star is for the trainers Leslie & Dave. The workout were good but I preferred the strength training days as the cardio days were limited for me since I have bad knees and shoulder - the cardio classes for me were modified so much that I didn't get a good enough workout. Don't arrive late, even 5 seconds, as it happened to me, I was yelled at by the owner for arriving late and humiliated in front of the entire class - I made sure not to arrive late again. I just started at the gym when this happened to me but I've seen the owner Ami do this to several people during my time there. When we're in class and we see someone come late we all cringe knowing what will happen. Your required to sign up for class on the app and asked to sign up a couple days in advance so Ami knows how many people will be in class to see if there is a need for a second trainer, at least that's what she explained in class to all of us - if you don't show up you are charged a 30.00 fee - on the app there isn't a way to cancel the class. Luckily I texted the owner and she was able to cancel me without the charges. When I went on a fabulous 3 week trip to Italy I asked Ami to freeze my membership for the time away, she replied " send it to me in writing " no problem, I sent her an email for the dates I was leaving. While on vacation I was getting alerts that I was getting charged - I was charged weekly. I sent an email reminding Ami that I was on vacation and to please freeze my membership, the following week another charge ! When I returned home I spoke to Ami about it and she said she never received any emails from me. She became very defensive which made me wonder why.... Why so defensive. Ami went to her computer and was searching through I don't know what but claims again that there was no notification of me wanting to freeze my account, basically saying I was going to be stuck paying for workouts I wasn't attending. I was a bit upset but what really boiled my blood was that she stated " you didn't sign up for class today " I told her I wasn't going to sign up for classes anymore, I'm just going to show up and they can add me in on their hand held devise. Her response hit me the wrong way, she glared at me with a death stare and coldly said " we are not receptionists " that did it for me ! I told her loudly I won't be coming back cancel my membership! For $200.00 a month, for a 45 minutes workout in a tiny gym you'd be able to have them add you in as you arrive. Afterwards I blocked Ami from charging my credit card any further since she yelled at me while I was walking away that there is a $200 cancellation fee and I also put in a claim to reverse the charges for the 3 weeks I was gone on vacation. If she was going to charge me a cancellation fee, she'll have to bill me for it not just take it from my card. I received a scathing email from Ami and demanding proof of my freeze request. Then in another email just a day later she said never mind, she won't charge me the cancellation fee then in another couple days she's requesting the proof and wanting to charge me again - such strange emails each contradicting what was written before. I sent her the proof she needed and she stated why didn't you give this to me the first time, why would I since you said you weren't going to charge me... erratic behavior, very off in my opinion. All of this was a blessing as I told my daughter in law what happened and she told me to check out the Bay Club in Redwood Shores. I joined there for less money and the place is amazing ! Swimming pools, endless classes, 2 huge weight rooms and get this - an actual person at the desk to check you in - also the app lets you cancel the classes you signed up for. Did I mention towel service it's over the top and cheaper than F45 !! read more

I just finished up my trial sessions and joined up this week. The owner is really amazing and very engaging and encouraging during classes. She also goes out of her way to make things work for you which I really appreciated when I had a snag in my trial sessions. Not to mention the fact that she is always there and pulling up for all of us with that ray of light energy and always smiling is A+. The gym itself if very well equipped and the classes are very high quality and challenging. It's a really sweet community and there's nothing but family vibes here. I committed a year right off the bat because I knew I was in it for the long haul. Don't think twice! Definitely give F45 a try and I guarantee you'll be hooked. read more

I've been a member here for a couple years now. I love F45 and their training format. What makes this studio special are all the coaches and the owner Ami. With the new way of life due to COVID Ami has really figured out a way to create a safe environment for her members to maintain their routine. I also love the sense of community and always feel welcomed by all the coaches. They are friendly and funny which makes classes enjoyable. The new precautions taken to provide a safe space are: * temperature taken upon arrival *hand sanitizer given upon arrival *outdoor canopies with distance between mats. If you want to be even more distanced there are a couple canopies farther out. *disinfectant and hand sanitizer provided at each station *members wipe down equipment and mats used with disinfectant prior to leaving. With classes being moved outside the workouts aren't exactly what you would have in the studio but that does not affect the quality or results of the workout. You will still get a good sweat session. I highly recommend F45 San Mateo and commend Ami for adapting and pivoting to our ever changing way of doing business these days. read more

Wondering how we survived for the past 15 weeks @ F45 San Mateo??? No surprises here from this outstanding studio - didn't miss a beat and kept us going and still going strong with in-studio (opened week 16). Here is the LIVE ZOOM schedule that the studio offered during COVID quarantine: 6:30 am, 9:00 am, 12 PM Fri., 5PM, 10AM Saturday (60 min), and 10AM Sundays. Now no one can complain that they didn't have time or choice. Recorded sessions for later view for those who couldn't attend the LIVE ZOOM classes were available as well. They also had fun and creative workout challenges from all the coaches (5 min workouts) on their IG page (IGtv) for those in-between what else can I do periods. They even had all the coaches checking in with all the members via IG to say hello and that they missed us. I was able to maintain my regular routine the entire time with 6 days a week with the 6:30am crew and stay strong. Daily newsletter with all the links and related news to keep us informed. Oh did I mention that we even had loaner weights to use at home? Yes! So now you are wondering what does it look like to be back in the studio??? Just as fantastic and no surprises! Owner and coach work worked so diligently to first and foremost ensure the SAFETY of her members and team. Went above and beyond with the guidelines and standards outlined by San Mateo County. Asked for continuous feedback throughout the whole process from members. She was very transparent and honest with us throughout this entire pre and post COVID season. Studio is measured out to ensure 6 ft social distancing, sanitation stations throughout, masks(optional) for purchase and towels provided, contact-less check-in's and temperature checks. Members are all very respectful and cooperative with guidelines and safety measures put in place. Schedules in-studio are the following: MON-FRI: 5A, 6A,7A,8A,9A,10A-ZOOM (for those not comfortable coming in studio YET), NOON, 4:30P, 5:30P, 6:30P (except fri). SATURDAY (60 MIN): 6:30A, 7:45A, 9A, 10:15A (with LIVE DJ ALL classes), 10A ZOOM. SUN: 7:30A, 8:30A, 9:30A, 10:30A, 10A ZOOM! I feel completely safe and the studio has always looked brand new and still does. Very organized and efficient with many options. F45 San Mateo also provides an additional service with delicious home food ordering options from Umami To Go. It is offered during all Challenges as well for the convenience of all members. My wife and I are from out of state and were visiting family for the holidays in December of 2022. When we saw there was a local F45 we went and asked about drop in classes or a class package. We explained to the instructor we were from out of state but attended F45 classes at home and would like to continue our workouts while we were visiting. The instructor recommended a 10 class package which was around $300 - never did they tell us that it would expire if we did not use all of the passes. Well we only used about half of our passes. We noticed in the F45 app that the package said it expired. We'll be back in town visiting again in May/June, so we emailed asking about the expiration date. The response we got was rude and defensive, saying that we were clearly instructed the classes expired (we were not, and why would we assume they would? We figured it was like a gift care, no expiration date). On top of that, the owner then told us that we were silly for even buying a pass, as they offer a 20% discount to members of sister gyms (which would include us). By that logic, it would have been cheaper to just do drop in sessions, rather than buy a pass, and we would have not had to worry about expiration dates. I have no idea how the owner couldn't connect the dots there; obviously if our options were clearly explained to us, as they insinuated, we would have gone with the drop in sessions at a discount. The fact that we bought a pass in the first place when drop ins would have been cheaper should have been a clear indicator that there was a lack of communication to us. We honestly did not expect them to honor all of the remaining "expired" passes, but were hoping for at least some kind of goodwill gesture. What we did not expect was a rude email and accusatory email from the owner. This was such a put off that we have no interest in returning to this gym. Keep in mind this is also a studio who, when we were attending in December of 2022, more than half of their TVs (critical to the workout, as it shows what each station should be doing as well as keeps time) were broken with either dead pixels, lines down the screen, or hues were totally off (some of the screens were permanently tinted blue?). For the money they charge to go here, you would expect white glove service, but instead it's dark and dingy with no natural light. Additionally the attitude of the owner is completely unacceptable. There are plenty of other fitness options in the area, and if you value a good experience, I would recommend that you look elsewhere. read more

After the first class, I was hooked. I play soccer competitively and have always been looking for a workout that could help improve my performance on the field while keep my body in shape. I tried weight lifting and doing hitt at home but the results were not good enough. F45 is something different. You go in there and just give your best to push yourself to the limit with a combination of hitt, cardio and weight workouts that keep your full body burning. And everyday is different with different stations and drills. The people you workout with are also nice and giving their best. Not to mention the coach, always helping you and pushing you to exceed the limit. Highly recommend! read more

I have never enjoyed going to the gym. It was always something I forced myself to do bc I knew I should. I hadn't been to the gym in about a year until I decided to try f45. I now love the gym and I try my best to go every day! The staff is so supportive and friendly. I never feel judged or anything. I never know what to do at the gym or what exercises to do and f45 makes it so easy! I also love that I'm in and out in less than an hour but I get a full good workout in. I am unfortunately moving and originally I was using f45 to just get into a routine of working out before I moved. Now I will absolutely be continuing it when I move and I'll miss this location! F45 is one of the most community loved, inclusive beyond words, and fun places to work out at! I have been working out for all of my adult life, and I've tried a lot of different things (private boot camps, large gyms, OTF, personal trainers), but this is the best for so many reasons. Even getting a glance at their clientele will show you how this gym goes above beyond in accommodating everyone and anyone. For context, I am a teacher, working mom, and especially love the early morning classes as an option. If it weren't for that option, it would be impossible to prioritize my own physical health (which is really everyone's mental health) otherwise. The schedule really accommodates working schedules with early and late classes. Specifically the 5, 6 and 7am classes are the best for those who have early start times for work, have family members they need to rush out the door, or commuters, etc. The coaches go out of their way to build a sense of community, share their expertise, build rapport with each of their members, and it truly shows. The owner, Ami, is always lively, a blast to be in the studio with and extremely knowledgeable. Each coach has an engaging and supportive presence, which makes it such a special place. Plus, who doesn't want to get a killer workout in every day in just 45-minutes and feel like you have been working out for so much longer?! The variety of workouts in just the span of a week leave you feeling so accomplished and you've really checked all of the boxes in your fitness goals for the week. The studio itself is clean and pristine, and the upkeep is unmatched. I've been going to this gym for over a year, and I feel so much stronger! I've never done any weight training to f45 but it's quickly become my favorite form of exercise. The trainers here are really what makes the place so special. They all know your name and make sure to motivate and push you when necessary. Even the late fees are great for helping me get up in the morning and make it to the workout even on days when I'm feeling super lazy.
