Driving back to Atlanta from North Carolina this past Sunday (the Sunday after Thanksgiving), there…read morewas a lot of holiday traffic on I-85. I-85 is two lanes in these parts and it was backed up severely. Waze led me off the interstate twice. The first time, I was taken through Fair Play, a tiny rural town near the South Carolina-Georgia border. I took a break before hopping back on the interstate and crossing into Georgia. That's how I ended up at this place known as Bountyland Quick Stop. Bountyland is a chain of convenience stores with over a dozen locations located primarily in the northwestern corner of South Carolina. They also have a couple locations in Highlands, North Carolina. This particular Bountyland is attached to an Exxon gas station. The store isn't on the same level as a QuikTrip, RaceTrac, or Sheetz, but it's not terrible either. When I visited, the store appeared to be well-stocked with snacks, drinks, and other essentials. There were self-serve drinks, coffee, slushies, and icy treats as well as decent-looking hot dogs on the roller grill and two kinds of fresh boiled peanuts (original and Cajun). There were tables to sit down and eat. There were three ladies behind the counter and they greeted most of the people who entered the store. The men's restroom, which had two toilets and an out-of-order urinal, was clean. It happened to be busy when I was there (around 2:20pm). A lot of the folks - workers and customers - knew each other. I saw friends/acquaintances bumping into each other. It really felt like a small town in that regard. Overall, this just seems like a quiet, humble convenience store.

The staff was polite. Had I not been looking for a magnet, the rest of the business was lacking at best. Given my current circumstances, I don't foresee myself stopping here again anytime soon but I didn't get killed to there's that.

I started my layover and was about to fall asleep only to hear banging on my door. A strange looking man of Indian descent with a flashlight kept banging and banging and banging and shining his stupid flashlight into the cab. This went on for 5-10 minutes. Finally after realizing he was not going away I asked him what he wanted. He demanded $12 to park for the night. I said there were no signs indicating this requirement. He told me to leave as this was "private property" . After a heated argument with lots of screaming and yelling I was furious and waved a $20 bill just to get this freak out of my life. He declined but insisted I go inside and pay the $12 to get some stupid receipt to tape on my window. I was out of driving time or else I would have gladly left. I was FURIOUS. All this happened in the middle of the night. I WILL NEVER FREQUENT THIS PLACE AGAIN. Pass the word around and avoid supporting unprofessional unfriendly greedy foreign owned dives like this.

This gas station used be a RaceTrac (https://www.yelp.com/biz/racetrac-petroleum-store-608-lavonia), but it converted to a RaceWay at some point over the last several years. RaceWay sites, buildings, and gas facilities are owned by RaceTrac, but RaceWay stores are independently owned and operated. I'm generally a fan of RaceTrac-branded stations (they're company-operated). RaceWays are more hit or miss. This one was a huge miss. Overall, the station was dirty and grimy. The single men's restroom was in bad shape. The toilet was wet (seat and handle), filled with bubbled-up urine, and was hard to flush. The floor was wet with water and urine and there were bugs flying around. Luckily, the soap dispenser had soap. My gas pump (pump #1) was leaky. The nozzle was constantly leaking a steady stream of gas from the moment I undocked the handle to the moment I redocked the handle. With the way the wind was blowing, gas was drizzling everywhere. This pump was in dire need of repair. The station has 24 pumps. At least the gas prices were fair.
