We moved back to Calgary and although our previous dentist still operates her clinic in DT, we decided not to go back there considering high cost of downtown parkings. We found The Expressions Dental in NW. From the moment I called the clinic I felt it will be a good pick for us. Robin, the front desk associate was very professional, easy to talk to, offered to retrieve our records from our dentist in Kelowna to mitigate the cost of various x-ray etc. On my first visit I met the hygienist, Tiba and she is absolutely wonderful, very knowledgeable, gentle in performing her task and she made sure that I felt as comfortable as possible. I definitely recommend to have TIBA to be your hygienist at this clinic. The same impression made on me Dr Gill. Although the visit with her was limited to meet-and-greet, I had this feeling that she truly cares and don't push onto you unnecessary treatment. read more

My Mom woke up this past Saturday morning with an unbearable tooth ache, and after having called her regular dentist to no avail, we started researching walk-in dental clinics in Calgary. We decided to try Expressions Dental (formerly Petra Dental Group) because they take walk-ins and emergency appointments. They told us to come in right away (My Mom's regular dentist, whom she's been going to for the last 20 years, said the earliest they could get her in was Monday night at 7pm). As soon as we got there, we were greeted by two lovely ladies at the front who had us fill out some information. Within 5 minutes, my Mom had already gone in to see first the dental assistant Casey, and then the AMAZING doctor, Dr. Lori Gee. Dr. Gee suggested she pull the tooth, which she did, and scheduled a follow-up appointment for one week later, which will be free of charge. 3 X-rays, 1 tooth pulled and a follow up appointment ended up costing $295, which is EXTREMELY reasonable, considering my Mom's regular dentist charges $200 for the Xrays alone. It's now been 2 days and my Mom is feeling a lot better. If it wasn't for Expressions Dental, she would have spent the entire weekend in bed with unimaginable pain. Thanks to this great place, she's now already half-healed. We've officially made the switch and will no longer be returning to our regular dentist, because let's be honest, loyalty is one thing, but foolishness is another. The team at Expressions Dental is one of the best I've ever encountered in a dental office and because of their professionalism, accomodativeness, expertise and affordable prices, they have gained a valuable customer. In Short? Excellent Service, Incredibly Human, Painless, Comfortable, Very Reasonably Priced!!! Long story? First of all, I would like to help you envision the relationship between me and the dentistry. I have never been scared of the dentists like most people. I have always been abashed, aghast, apprehensive, cowed, daunted, dismayed, disturbed, frightened, frozen, have cold feet, horrified, nervous, panic-stricken, perplexed, perturbed, petrified, rattled, shocked, stunned, terrified, terror-stricken, timorous, trembling, etc... You got the picture, right? There were good reasons behind this exceptional fear. To give you a tiny idea - imagine a root canal being done without ANY freezing. Yep. And that would only account to 1/5 of the pain I once experienced. (Never mind the terrible treatment and intimidation). If I ever see that dentist again, I will... Let him stay alive... But I do have the pliers... And will make sure I smack him on the cheek the same way I was smacked when I flew out of the chair in extreme agony. Since then, every time I sat down into the dentist's chair, I made sure they knew how TERRIFIED I was. Well, who cared? Is it my luck? Always had very harsh, intimidating dentists. ___________________________________________________ I am not anymore anywhere close to being like that. And... I found the dentist WHO REALLY CARES! And she can make you think you are at the Christian Dior store, even though she is about to pull a couple of your fangs... (I know they called canines in humans, just some of my teeth are so stubborn). First time I got to experience the gentle magic of a true tooth fairy Dr. DAYA was here, at Expressions Dental. A very expensive (custom colored crown) that I had put on at some snobby SW dental clinic came off in about 4 months. Front tooth. I work with public. Can't be without the front tooth, you know... I phoned the night before, and I got an 8 am appointment! So, there I was, shaking like a... like nothing ever shakes at 8 am.... And here was that sweetest nurse/assistant/receptionist (sorry, I am just reentering the dental world without fear, I don't know how to call this amazingly friendly person) invites me to follow her, and... no, she was not trying to smile wider than the room to intimidate me even more with her perfectly white pearlies... She was friendly and she was very calming. So, I get into the chair. I am ready with my little speech about my fear of dentists... And I hear this voice, saying simple "Hi, how are you?" And I turn my head to see this petite woman, who seems to be HAPPY to see me! And... to cut the story short, I went back to that clinic to redo my whole mouth. I DID, NO ONE MADE ME TO! Today's appointment was long, very tiring... But we made it through! You know why? Because Dr. DAYA makes sure you feel as comfortable as possible, and though I am the WORST patient ever, she did what needed to be done. Want to hear a funny? They tried to schedule me for my next appointment three weeks from now. You know what I said? Next Week! The bottom line: TRUST ME!!! This is great place to open your mouth wide! The actual dentist is fine. What I don't like is when they contact me to make an extra appointment and tell me that it will be covered by my insurance. End of the appointment I end up paying because they were mistaken. This happened on a 2nd occasion when I went in just for a cleaning. I was done the cleaning and they said the doctor will be in for your check up. I questioned this because I thought my appointment was only for a cleaning. I had them double check that I was covered for another checkup and they assured me I was. End of the check up they tell me again they were mistaken and I had to pay the full price of the check up. This ended up costing me a lot of money for unnecesssary appointments. They also have a 3 day cancellation policy which I find a little much. If you cancel within 3 days of your appointment you are charged for the full appointment. I have never had these issues with any other dentist so I will be looking elsewhere. read more

When we had a dental emergency they fit my husband in on short notice and charged us even less than they had quoted us on the phone which was already significantly lower than other quotes we had gotten. I recently had major tooth pain and after 4days of barely standing it I had one night I couldn't even sleep so I searched dental emergency centers and found Expressions. I called them 3 times and left 3 messages and one there voice mail it said someone will get back to you within 20min...yah right!!! Try 5 hours!!! Finally they called, they brought me in when they opened, and were not bad to deal with once in the office. HOWEVER it has now been 2 weeks since then and they were supposed to call with a referral date, no call. So I called to check on my appt to have the tooth actually fixed, they hadn't even called to book it!!!!!! So now it's a waiting game, and well my too isn't getting any better!!!..... What a frustrating experience. I've never posted a review before for any kind of service but I'm so annoyed I just had to today. My son got hit in the face and chipped a tooth and I wanted to make sure everything was okay. I waited almost an hour past my appointment time at Expressions Dental, they took an x-ray, tapped his tooth, and put a swab with cold sprayed on it on the front of his tooth to make sure it was alive. She was there for a maximum of 5 minutes and they charged me $179. When I questioned this the woman at the front pretty much said that insurance covered most of it so what is the big deal? And they wanted me back in 2 weeks to see about filling and/or filing it. Not a chance! I'll be returning to my regular dentists once he's back from holidays! read more

I don't usually write reviews but every time when I think of wisdom teeth and dentist, I recall what Expressions dental did to me. I went expressions dental for extracting my wisdom tooth and I asked them how much it would cost and they said probably around $400 at maximum. And guess what. They charged me around $600 (it's without the x-ray fee). They charged me about 100 bucks on special check fee(don't remember the exact name but something like it) . it's like the dentist is double checking my teeth before the surgery. It took no longer than 10 second and they still charged me that much. But I wasn't that pissed that time till I got a call from them few weeks after that surgery. They started to talk very nicely at first, they said I should make another appointment for cleaning. But the cost was like $400 and I couldn't afford that much especially after spending like $700(including the x-ray fee) few weeks ago. So I said nicely back, that I can't afford that much right now so I would better to do it some other time in near future. They hung up on me so rudely after that. I froze for few min on the spot, holding the phone, thinking "WTF?" I firmly decided not to go there ever again. NEVER. read more

I had veneer work done there. Within two hours the temporary tooth fell off. The dentist did not fix the bite correctly once the veneer was put on. I gave a lot of money and the returned with poor service. Not only that when I ask for my file to transferred to my new dentist they charged me a fee. Poor, service and work... RUN!! read more

I had left a less than complimentary review of this clinic in Jan 2013. I had a couple of dental problems that needed to be done after my root canal, so I braved making another appt at this clinic. I had asked to see another dentist and I must say the difference in my opinion of this clinic is remarkable. Dr Gill was kind and gentle, she stepped me through the procedures and there was no pain this time. I had an extraction and I was terrified of how the procedure would go. No pain, it was an uncomplicated extraction. I'm the first to admit I am a big baby when it comes to seeing the dentist, but Dr Gill is one of the good ones! Big shout out to the front office staff, you rock!! Dr Gill has my vote of confidence and I will return to work with her on my many dental problems. read more

Expressions Dental is the worst Dental office in Calgary! There staff is very rude and did not give me the correct imformation. This was the worst experience of my life. They grossly over charge and if you dont pay THAT MOMENT IN FULL you WILL be harassed daily.I had work done on monday and on that tues ONE day later they called and left a threatining voice mail saying, to pay my bill in full before "futher action" had to happen. Which the bill was souposed to be covered, and their receptionist told me my insurance would cover it, and when to my suprise it was not, this is how I was treated. Because I did not have the balance in full that day thay wouldnt let me leave untill I left them with "something" she said, They FORCED me to leave my SIN# card!!!! I called the local authorites and they told me this was illegal!! They can not leaglly do this to someone. They DO NOT give you 30 days to pay your bill. They also sneakly add a 28% daily interest!!!!!!!!!!!! I have called at least 100 other offices and they have never heard of such a large interest rate.. one Dentist said "it was shocking".Expressions Dental DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU BUT THE MONEY!1 Save youself the pain and dont take you loved ones here! read more

For some reason all the reviews that help people (i.e. warn them on this hack of a dentist's office) have been removed. This is absurd. This dentist office is scary to say the least. I called because my tooth had cracked and they made an appointment for me that evening which was great, very accommodating until I got there. My appointment was for 6 PM - I sat and waited until 7 PM after filling out there forms, which basically ask you to sign your first born child away. I sat there and started to feel very nervous when the front desk person kept calling someone to find the answer to every question. In an hour she called someone else at least 6 or 7 times. Why is she working there if she doesn't know what she's doing. After waiting an hour, she took an X-ray of my tooth. I then sat there for another 20 minutes while the dentist worked on someone next door to me. The dentist finally came over, asked me to open my mouth and starting pulling on my tooth with tweezers. I asked her what she was doing, when she replied she was taking the broken piece out. Excuse me? You don't think you should warn someone before you start ripping a tooth out of there mouth? I asked her what would happen after that and she said I would need either a crown or a root canal (on a tooth that has already had a root canal). Being that it was clearly marked on my chart that i DID NOT have insurance - and this so called procedure costs $1200-$1500 - you would think that the dentist would have enough sense to explain that to her patient before she ripped a piece of her tooth out and scheduled a bunch of other appointments for this work. I assumed, having not been told that it would be a couple hundred dollars at most. When I went out to pay for the X-ray (which by the way did nothing and showed nothing) and my half of a tooth being ripped out - which was $160.00, I asked for a ballpark on the cost for the crown. This is when I was told it would be at least $1200.00. I said I could not afford that and asked to speak to the dentist again about what I should do next. The receptionist or whatever she is supposed to be, said she would talk to the dentist for me. She then came back and when I asked her how they expect people to pay $1200-$1500 in one shot, she proceeded to lecture me on what the "general population" does as if I was a moron for not having two grand sitting around for a procedure I wasn't prepared for. She told me how the general population has insurance, which is total bs, and then the general population knows that crowns are that much money. Yes - because that's what the general population does, spend their time researching crowns - just in case. She was incredibly rude, condescending and unprofessional. When i called her out on it, she immediately put her head down and apologized. It started to become very apparent these people are not here because they care whatsoever about their patients - this office is scary and if you care about your dental health and your bank account you will NOT go here. The dentist came out eventually and told me it was not her job to tell me about how much procedures cost as people pay her in cash all the time. Doesn't sound like any legitimate dentist office I've ever heard of. On top of this, while I was sitting there, I watched the dental assistant tell a client that her daughter had 5 or 6 cavities on her baby teeth and they would need to fill them. Really, I'm no dentist, but she's going to lose her baby teeth - seems like a money grab to tell someone to fill teeth that are going to FALL OUT!!! I would NEVER go back here, I would feel more comfortable ripping my own tooth out. read more

I chipped off a rather large piece of my tooth on a Friday evening. Requested an appointment online at 9PM that evening. Was called back within an hour by the owner who was very friendly, professional and helpful. I had requested their earliest appointment, and he explained to me that it would be better if I took a later appointment that way they could fix my tooth if necessary and I wouldn't have to come back. I took the later appointment. Very happy and relieved of the stress I had about this tooth prior to calling. Scratch that as soon as I walked into the door to that place. Every single staff member was nothing but rude to me and did nothing but try to pressure me into a full exam to become a regular patient. I had explained that I currently did not have benefits, and was waiting on them through work. Finally got into the chair to have THE BEYOND RUDEST hygienist sit me down, couldn't be bothered to even smile at me once. She took a radiograph. Showed me it. Then asked me what I wanted to do. Pardon me? I'm not a dentist, that's why I came to the office to see what needed to be done to repair my tooth. When I explained to her that I didn't know what the tooth needed done she huffed and puffed out of the room after saying "fine I'll get the dentist". Dentist came in, had no interest in my case, I felt like I didn't exist. Like my problem didn't matter. He explained to me they could probably fill it, but not today, they were way too busy. Imagine that, after being told yes for sure my tooth could be fixed during the later appointment, it actually can't. How fantastic. That was it, appointment over. Back out front to the waiting room to wait on a quote. $250 to do a filling on this tooth, oh but I'll have to come back in two weeks because they're just too busy. That'll be $120 for the service rendered today. Perfect. Thanks so much. Two weeks now, and the day before my appointment I hear back from my benefits group and my benefits will come into effect June 1st. When I call to see if I can reschedule and explained my situation. Speak with a rude secretary who tells me nope too bad for you to reschedule an appointment will cost you a cancellation fee and too bad about my benefits. Thanks so much. Total rip off. Terrible service. No one cares in there. Will not be going back. Will not recommend. Unless of course you want to be treated like dirt. Then by all means. read more

I do not recommend this clinic! I went to this clinic because it was close to me and I had just broken a tooth. My regular dentist was away for 1 week, and I thought I should get this looked after quickly. I found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful, and was looking forward to a good experience. The dentist examined my tooth and advised that the tooth was not salvageable (could not build a crown on it) and that I would need to go to an endodontist. This tooth was one that had a root canal done in the past, and the dentist said it had decay on the root canal and that I would also need a new root canal done. This seemed odd, as it was less than 24 hours since it broke. The dentist said that there is a lot of bacteria in our mouths and that it does not take long for decay to start. The dentist was very insistent that I go to a particular endodontist -- he mentioned a specific endodontist at least 4 times. This was also reiterated by the front counter staff. The dentist said there was nothing he could do at the time, until I went to the specific endodontist. He left my broken tooth untreated. The remaining tooth had a very jagged edge which my tongue kept getting caught up on, but he did nothing about this. I waited until my dentist was back from vacation and I am very happy I did. There was no concern about decay on my root canal. Although my dentist did not have the time available to fix the tooth (which needed 2 hours), he did grind down the jagged edge which was constantly cutting into my tongue, and he applied a paste onto the broken tooth, which he said acts like a bandaid, and protects it from decay. My dentist said there was sufficient tooth material left to build a base for a crown. Expressions dental left my tooth untreated. They should have applied the protective "bandaid" to it, and they should have grinded down the sharp jagged spike that was left of my tooth. If I would have known these were "options", I would have insisted upon it. From the x-rays provided by Expressions dental, and a physical examination, my dentist was able to determine within a few seconds that there was a suitable base to build a crown upon (no endodontist required). Furthermore, their insistence that I see a specialist for further unnecessary procedures, concerns me about their true intentions/motivations. read more
