A little backround on the "drunk historical figure" tour:…read more
The cast rotates, the show is improv, there might be better days than ours, our day was among the most boring shows I've seen in Manhattan, the improv was forced, funny bits were not funny, we were entertained for about 5 minutes for a group dance number toward the end.
On the other hand, the actors all seemed pretty good, though a couple were mis cast, the acting was fine, that's not the criticism.
My critisim runs deeper than individual perfomances:
The "set" and props consisted of red curtains and a couple of nice throne type chairs, the props consisted of one cape, fangs, a wood stake, and a plastic spay bottle to spray holy water.
There was a willy Wonker hat and coat on one of the stars.
It seemed to us the show uses shills in the audience to force laughs and manufactured amusement, the internet confirmed that sentiment as true:
Additionally, there was little to no audience participation as we expected from reviews, the two instances there as an audience member, those two instances seemed like theatre members.
Most seating is on low book shelves.
Theisshow uses similar formula and format as their "Drunk Shakespear" production.
If we were closer to the exit we would have found our out, but in the middle of the theatre we didn't want to disrupt the play, the actors work hard and are good actors, but the improv and atmosphere was "disappointing", if you go it will hopefully be better and more natural, this was forced when we attended.
The play gets two stars rather than one because another day or cast, this might be entertaining with more interaction, more audience participation made part of the show, (the last line is intended as constructive for future productions to consider)
