I'll be honest, I like to go to self-serve, pay at the pump and get out. Here you do need to go into the store but they make it as efficient as possible. They are so busy that they have you pump your gas then move your car ahead before going into the store to pay. They ask that you let them know how much you owe them when you get into the store. This allows others to pump their gas. It is a Fabian gas station. During the increase in gas prices recently, Charleen's prices were ALWAYS lower than anywhere around. The prices were not just a little but a lot (30-50 cents a gallon) lower. They want to give the savings back to the community. There were times when the gas was $4.50 gallon at other stations and I don't think it ever went over $3.90 here. Let me tell you, the owners are awesome. They are friendly and inviting. They love dogs and are fine if you want to bring them into the store. They offer a variety of sundry items, beer, milk and even local baked goods. It is hard to rave about a gas station but if I am going to, it is absolutely going to be about Charleen's. This store/gas station and the people who own it are the best!

The service plaza is right where I-95 and I-295 meet (I-95 Exit 102 Northbound, Exit 103 Southbound, I-295 Exit 51). There are tons of signs, you can't miss it. The inside is basically a food court set-up with an awesome moose statue in the middle. Did I mention the huge moose statue outside as well? There is a Starbucks (open 6am-8pm), a Quiznos (open 11am-8pm), a Burger King (open 24 hours), a Z-market (open 6am-8pm), and a Hershey's Ice Cream Place (open seasonally in the summer). There are a ton of bathrooms which have been clean every time I've had to use them. My advice: if you need to make a pit stop, stop here! Do not wait for the next one.

I definitely use to frequent this rest area/service plaza more when living in central Maine. A trip…read moreback home from Bar Harbor and needing a bathroom stop this did the trick. Food/drink wise they have Dunkin and Popeyes with both charging more than your average location. Along with those you'll find a market with road trip essentials at elevated prices as well. They've been talking that the service plazas in Maine are suppose to get upgraded and will see better food options so we shall see where that goes. Rumor has been potential first Shake Shacks in Maine. The biggest knock I would give this particular rest area/service plaza compared to the others in Southern Maine would be the fact you have to leave the highway system. It tacks on extra time that adds an extra level of annoyance. The place in general was clean including the bathrooms but could use an updating in my opinion. While the sinks are touch-less both the soap and paper towel dispensers were not. That seems like a pretty common standard but not here. I've been to worse rest stops but this could be significantly better as well.

I'll look it up and fill it in. At 4:00 AM and any hours after midnight until then - nothing is open - yet Irving is and therefore must be awarded extra star power points to keep the lights on, coffee available and grab and go foods and drinks. The large coffee will cost $3.12 w/ tax, but will set you free from caffeines calling and with a long day ahead & the quality of the beans used, it's worth the extra dough ray me. Hot foods inside also add to the star points, as a traveler - a warm slice of pizza (perhaps a bit aged in the day) beats a cold turkey wrap. Road nomad tip: just Dunkin your pizza in your coffee for a hotter and faster breakfast after filling your tank and continuing the road. Clean outside and in - Mainers are typically good about not littering, some more than others and a few loosies can escape your clutches on a windy day, so there is a margin for litter error. Right bays to gas up, well lit and prices hover around the mid coast standard. Now weirdos lumbering around as ya find at some 24 hour spots all around our beautiful country - but don't leave your valuables unattended - says the New Yorker in me - not anywhere and not at any time.

It's mostly a convenience store and gas station stocked full of all kinds of junk food, pastries, milk, breads and some unique Maine types of weird things. But over on the side of the store is a small grill that manages to produce a whole range of different things. All kinds of cool breakfast stuff, some traditional like several varieties on bacon and egg and toast and other rather uncommon things like breakfast burritos and even something call breakfast pizza. They also have some absolutely gigantic freshly baked cinnamon rolls that smell fantastic and of course the ubiquitous Maine blueberry pancakes. But there is a lot more here than just breakfast. All kinds of pizzas are served throughout the day as well as various sandwiches, fried chicken, burger type things and sea bugs like shrimp, scallops and of course some great lobster rolls. In fact they even have live lobsters and crabs that they will cook for you or you can take them home and kill them yourself. Just an amazing amount of different foods prepared so many different ways. You or course can fill up with gas for your vehicle or get caught up on the latest local gossip too. Not a whole lot of stores around here so they make the best of what they have. A very cool and old fashion type of do everything store. The type that makes Maine such a cool place.
