We were promised attentive care, quality meals, meaningful activities, and professional support. In reality, we experienced chronic understaffing, long call-light wait times, cold and poor-quality meals, skipped care tasks, poor communication, and very limited activities for assisted living residents. The dining experience was especially problematic. Meals were routinely cold or incomplete, and because my father was blind, family members attended dinner almost every night for a year to make sure he could actually eat safely and receive what he ordered. We repeatedly raised concerns with management throughout the year, but meaningful improvements never occurred. I understand no facility is perfect, and I say this as someone who worked in healthcare management myself. However, families should carefully evaluate whether the assisted living services being promised are truly being delivered.

Beautiful facility and there are some great employees that work there but we had quite a few issues…read morewhile my mom was there. Our family needed respite care and we never got a break. Someone needed to be there to make sure things were being taken care of. But for the cost I say hire an aid at your home would be better. Short staff, temporary staff on weekends, employees especially on midnights working their butts off while others sit on phone. I've caught employees sleeping on job late at night while patients were wandering or getting into other residents rooms. I feel that memory care residents are sometimes taking advantage of because of their memory issues. The employees sometimes would shut off residents alert watchers but not take care of the issue and staff would say we will be back. Sometimes having to ring the watch again. For example my mom needed to go to the bathroom. Employee came in and they have 10-15 minutes to tend to them. They shut the residents watch off so employee doesn't want to get written up but my mom was never able to use the bathroom right away. The staff member didn't come back for another 30 minutes. Sometimes my mom said I couldn't hold it anymore. How mortifying for her. We paid good money and I understand there are some amazing employees too that had to do so much in a short time dealing with as many residents at one time. We were told that if staff was short handed, directors would step in, only for daytime shift. I eventually had to spend the night making sure that my mom was getting meds or get turned over. Food was good at first but about a month later maybe new cook but food went downhill. When a resident has physical issues such as twisted hips, you have to be gentle and not move them fast and rough. To hear my mom cry one day was heartbreaking. The day she passed, they were kind to bring us snacks and beverages. But as I found out with 2 other people I knew received blankets when they passed. It's been 6 months that my mom passed and still nothing. I feel it was because we stirred the pot and was on top of everyone in that facility making sure they did things right. Possibly something they didn't like. But again for the amount of money we spent a month with an empty room that we had to provide everything was crazy. Just remember if you go, they are going to not tell you all the facts completely. See make sure you ask a ton of things.

Approx. 250+ people came and no one was required to wear masks. Yep! 1 week later, 8 assisted living residents are infected with Covid. 4 of which I believe had to be hospitalized. After that all happened, i walked in the front doors a couple days later and they let people in without masks. Still, after this all happened. Westwood needs to understand the safety of their residents. i think the staff is young and in experienced.

I had a mystery box cooking demo in which I had two hours to prepare a starter, entree and dessert for 6 guests. The ingredients I was given were not conducive to the environment. A whole chicken, partially frozen shrimp, cous cous. And other random ingredients. Sorry folks it's not Morton's steak House. Nobody is butchering whole chickens for service of over 100 people. Half frozen non peeled shrimp? Peel and eat shrimp boil anyone? Let's not mention that I'm smashed into a 2'x2' space next to a prep sink with three cooks a pastry chef and dishwashers trying to get prepared for lunch service! Or that some of the equipment I needed to use was in various states of disrepair. I wish the successful candidate the best of luck, with the current state of disrepair of the kitchen and the monkeys running the circus, it'll be a challenge to say the least.

The decision was easy, Brookdale Utica, outshined them all by leaps and bounds!! The facility, including her room, was bright and cheery and the staff caring (always smiling), my mom loved the place. Although she did not stay for a lengthy time, her time was relaxing for her and me knowing she was in good hands. Thanks Brookdale Utica MC for taking such excellent care of my mom. Love You Guys!!!
