This is not the place you want your elderly family member to be for rehab. My 94 year old mother…read morewas there after a hip fracture, surgery, and a 10 day hospital stay. Prior to her fall she was able to walk with a walker. After 10 days in a hospital bed, she was very weak and barely able to stand. The Bellbrook rehab staff was not very patient with her (despite saying it could take up to a year at her age to recover from her injuries) and after a week decided that she was fearful and unable to stand or walk. She is now totally wheelchair dependent. After being at Bellbrook for 3 weeks, she was told she had to be discharged - despite insurance authorizing her to stay for another week! Discharge planning was abysmal. The care is safe, but not family centered. They do not include the family at all, insisting that family members leave the room, "while they provide care". I suppose if you would like to drop your loved one off and not be involved with their care at all, this would be ok, but it was not ok with me.

Residents in Assisted Living are treated like royalty, while residents in Memory Care are treated like steerage on the Titanic. Memory Care residents are not bathed on a regular basis and their laundry goes for five days at a time without being laundered. Soiled bedsheets go without being changed until a family member comes for a visit and takes care of changing the sheets. The food Memory Care patients get is always cold and of very poor quality. It seems they get whatever is left over from Assisted Living residents. Oakleigh has had an infinite number of staff and lower level management changes that it's more like Grand Central Station than a reputable nursing home. For what they charge residents per month, the care needs to improve drastically! I would think twice before placing your loved ones into this excuse for a nursing home!

We were promised attentive care, quality meals, meaningful activities, and professional support. In reality, we experienced chronic understaffing, long call-light wait times, cold and poor-quality meals, skipped care tasks, poor communication, and very limited activities for assisted living residents. The dining experience was especially problematic. Meals were routinely cold or incomplete, and because my father was blind, family members attended dinner almost every night for a year to make sure he could actually eat safely and receive what he ordered. We repeatedly raised concerns with management throughout the year, but meaningful improvements never occurred. I understand no facility is perfect, and I say this as someone who worked in healthcare management myself. However, families should carefully evaluate whether the assisted living services being promised are truly being delivered.

The facility called us saying my grandmother was found unresponsive, and they were calling the ambulance. A few minutes later, they called back saying "never mind, she is responsive now. We think she was unresponsive due to the position she was in (slumped over in her wheelchair)." My father requested she be put in bed, and some of the family went up to check on her. We found her still in her wheelchair and still unresponsive. She was unable to open her eyes, she couldn't speak, etc. Had we just taken their word for it, my grandma would have never been medically treated. Additionally, my grandmother waited over an hour in the rehab unit on several occasions when she hit her button to use the bathroom. Then she ended up being put in room where the button didn't work, and she had no way to request for assistance. We met maybe two people that actually cared for her and took good care of her. P.S. be warned, when they say they have nurses on staff during evening hours, they do not. It is aids only, and if you want your loved one to be seen by the doctor, forget about it.

My 89 year old aunt has been living at Sunrise of Grosse Pointe Woods for nearly two years. On my last visit she called over several caregivers to her wheelchair and introduced them to me as you would a dear friend. My aunt was very unhappy to leave her own home and go into assisted living, but now she is contented thanks to the patience and attention of the wonderful staff. Resident Care Director Judy Gafa sets the tone at Sunrise GPW with wisdom and kindness and hands on care. She even personally accompanied my aunt for a doctor visit.
