There are many mistakes I have made in life, failing to research this so-called legitimate college tops the list. I'm an Army Veteran of 23 yrs. and I enrolled with Excelsior College with the hope of someday completing a "timely" degree that would afford me the opportunity to advance my career and already acquired experiences. It is an undisputed material fact, Excelsior College mislead students for the benefit of "Profit" causing students, including myself, to be placed into thousands of dollars of debt with overwhelming odds against them for completion of the distant learning ADN program, specifically the capstone CPNE. It also remains an undisputed material fact, Excelsior College failed to notify students, even after the conclusion of a previous legal action, in the form of a Class Action Complaint, their nursing program is accredited but "WITH CONDITIONS" by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). A prior review posted by "Lisa" misleads you into believing this college is well recognized with accreditation's and her statements are false. Lastly, it is also an undisputed material fact, Excelsior College failed to accurately report the pass/fail rates for their nursing program leading students into believing this was a bona-fide legitimate program and successful pathway to achieving their RN degree. Students enrolled with Excelsior College's ADN program, sooner or later, are forced to seek outside educational instruction to support their knowledge and attempts to pass a 3-day clinical known as the "CPNE" at a cost of $2,300 PER ATTEMPT! Without the successful completion at an expected 100% passing rate, you are unable to take your home NCLEX exam. Do you want to transfer your nursing credits to another program? Excelsior College fails to inform students that traditional brick and motar colleges will not recognize nor accept any nursing credits you have completed, leaving you no available options. This is worse than being stuck in Charlottes Web! In addition to these claims, Excelsior College's appeals process is fractured beyond repair. The FCCA examinations are in fact, theory related exams and serve no legitimate purpose. The FCCA course material recommended DID NOT relate to the testing material. After recently being offered a CPNE testing date, I will have waited a total of 19 months for a testing date following the conclusion of all required nursing classes/examinations. How does that make you feel knowing you have to wait almost 1.5 yrs. just to receive a testing date and still not be fully prepared because their are insufficient resources to prepare you beyond YouTube.com videos, EC videos and townhall forums along with a 300 page study guide? Excelsior College is currently facing a 2nd & 3rd Class Action Complaints for the continued violation of NY General Business Law and Fraud. It is no hidden secret, Excelsior College's current President claimed there was knowledge of a failing ADN program but because it was generating substanial revenue, they failed to address the problem. These statements and actions by those responsible at Excelsior College require an Attorney General review for criminal activity consistent with "Fraud". In closing, beyond this review website, another website designed to provide millions of jobs plus salary information, company reviews and interview questions from people on the inside of various companies and agencies known as "Glassdoor.com" there are multiple unfavorable reviews against Excelsior College. For example, one reviewer (former employee) claims, "Lost sight of its mission. Got Greedy! Money became it's #1 priority vs the people it was suppose to serve". A former student/employee claims, "Costly and not enough hands on training. Ineffective lab and skills training" in addition to claiming, "Misuse of student generated funds has finally become obvious". On the website "Pissed Consumers" one particular student, who identifies as a non-nursing student alleges, "The school hired an instructor who lied about their schooling, their work history and their awards...school FAILED to verify the instructor and did nothing to fix the problem". In closing, Excelsior's vision is more cloudy than someone with the condition of cataracts. They have had every opportunity to create a CPNE model consistent with a "mentorship" to better serve the education model of future nurses. They REFUSE to listen and therefore it is necessary to let the legal system determine the proper course of action and future of Excelsior College. read more

I love Excelsior. I completed one degree after taking just a just a few courses to satisfy some areas lacking after my military training evaluation review. I am now three courses away from my second degree. No issues so far. Excelsior is a great option for adults in the military in need of education that is offered 100% online. I am a current Excelsior student attempting to get a technical Master's Degree. The course materials are extremely old and outdated. The course I am taking now, the materials for the course discusses Windows XP as one of the current Windows operating systems. XP died April 2014 and is no longer supported. The class before that I was unable to get the labs working on my machine. It was clear that the labs were old and not geared to work with new machines. Although the professor was nice, he did not have the technical skills to help students fix their issues. After proving that the lab would not work in screen shots, I was dinged because the lab did not work. I called and complained and was told by the administration, they were going to review the labs for that course. Of course, that did not do my any good. If you are not back east, be prepared to turn assignments in early. All the assignments are based on EST. That means west coast students have to turn their assignments in 3 hours earlier. This means that if you end up in a different part of the world, you could just be out of luck. This is just another thing that makes me think I made a mistake started my program at this school. I am in the process of trying to find another online degree program. Hopefully, the classes I have taken can be transferred. Do not make the same mistake I did. It was my terrible experience and bad mistake studying in Excelsior College LPN to RN transition program. I have studied for 7 years, did not failed of any of theory exams, waited for CPNE 1,5 years and failed it. From the big emotional load I lost my temper - some instructors laughed from that. I just graduated 3 months ago and finally received my diploma today. After being surprised by their extortionate $500 graduation fee -that does not include an itemized bill and I specifically requested one be sent later, but the administration did not follow through- I was expecting at the very least a professional looking document that I could hang on the wall. Sadly, it looks like a high school kid in a basic computer literacy class formatted the document. It arrived in a large envelope without padding and was bent out of shape. Maybe this seems nitpicky, but after paying for classes that cost the same as those taken at a regular University and paying a graduation fee that was triple what you could expect anywhere else, I had higher expectations. They advertise the "unique" class schedule that lets you take courses faster, but it's not unique anymore; many colleges offer the same service. Almost none of the classes you will take even have pre-recorded lectures, they just post supplemental materials created by other individuals or institutions. 2/5 stars - a very mediocre experience with the exception of one professor, who was fantastic. read more

I sought excelsior due to being a working parent and LPN. I was looking for an option to further my education in the nursing program while working, as so many people do. I was mislead from the beginning, as they don't speak much of the actual clinical experience which is one of the final requirements for the program. I was told, "your work as an LPN will help with the clinical requirement. It isn't a big deal". That was so wrong. I passed all of my theory exams and required classes with no problem. The end was in sight! I was ecstatic and so happy to be getting where I wanted in my career. So. Wrong. Without going into tons of details and after submersing myself into the 500+ page 'study guide' I tested twice and both times was mislead, treated very unfairly and spent thousands of dollars, time, and effort in a program which obviously misrepresented their entire being. I could gather myself after the time, effort, and money and test once more. ($3000 each time). I then received correspondence and phone calls from the college that my test date was more than 8+ months away, but if I didn't complete my requirement (clinical) within a few short months then I would be kicked out of the program. Mind you, this date of my exam was not a pick and choose kinda thing. So this was definitely not my fault as I couldn't choose to go sooner. All in all, do not choose excelsiors program. I did a "bridge" program from paramedic to RN. I received An ADN, after having to take the CPNE twice. DO NOT GO TO ATLANTA if you are already enrolled. It was a total scam and waste of time and money. I Passed without issue in Madison. I have been an RN since 2014. The program is flexible but there is no help from instructors. It is 100% on you. Currently, I am in a research class that has been a complete nightmare. The teacher is completely bias and only care about whether or not your discussion posts are posted on time. She graded my major paper completely ridiculously and reduced points arbitrarily, I suspect because she is unhappy with my discussion post participation (occasionally I post late). Because the paper is worth so much of the final grade, I could have finished with an A with an A on the paper. She wasn't having it! I reached out to the school and asked for an independent review of the paper and they didn't even read it. Admittedly, they only read her feedback and said it was sufficient. If I wasn't four classes away from my masters I would withdraw from the school today! The shameful part is I freaking LOVE research, I read research papers for fun. Not even kidding. I am so passionate about evidence based practice it is a running joke at work. But this class has soured me on ever wanting to pursue that further. I would not recommend this school. It's too expensive to basically do everything yourself and when you have an issue... well tough luck. read more

I graduated from Excelsior in 2002 with my ASN. I took 6 courses and the CPNE clinical within 9 months and I PASSED. Its been a long time and I guess things have changed. Back then we were given books and audio cassettes to study each course on our own. When ready, we went to a Sylvan Learning Center to test. Complete your courses, pay for the CPNE ($2500 back then) and graduate. Even back then there were rumors that it was impossible to pass the CPNE. It wasn't. Began an associate degree in information technology back in late 2017 and have since transferred to a bachelors in the same field. The professors have been fantastic and the student advisers have been very helpful with any and all questions I have had over the last couple years. Highly recommend this school for any Veteran like me who does not want to sit in a chair in a class room all day. Graduates of this program are only allowed to sit for Nursing Boards in 18 states. out of 50 ( last I checked) Of those 18 I think 3 of them require additional education locally before you can take the boards and some states require preceptors after you pass. By far the hardest school to deal with when trying to get your transcript sent to a university or college for admissions. They will not send it electronically only by mail, which is ridiculous. Also, they will charge you extra for one transcript. I paid a little over $70.00 when the fee is 12.00. They said since I was no longer a student there I had to pay extra for each course or they wouldn't send it! I had no issues with the other colleges I attended. read more

This college is incredibly expensive at $500 per credit hour. Their financial aid department is absolutely atrocious to work with. I started submitting documents for Fall semester financial aid verification back in May. I submitted the same document 7 times and they somehow didn't get any of them. I had to wait nearly 3 weeks after financial aid disbursements were supposed to take place to even begin receiving my refunds. I nearly went homeless waiting for them to cross their t's and dot their i's when I had been trying to get them the necessary information for 3 months. Their credits do not transfer. The first class you take (CCS 120) is the most pointless class I've ever had to take. I wasted $1500 in tuition for them to "teach" me how to cite sources, use a search engine and write a 750 word paper on a completely random topic that is completely unrelated to, well, everything. Do yourself a favor and go to your local community college. You'll save tens of thousands of dollars in tuition. The credits you earn at Excelsior do not transfer, so unless you earn your degree with them, you're wasting your time and money. read more

I am a nuclear Navy veteran. I left the nuclear navy to work at commercial power plants. While I was working as an operator I finished my A.A. degree in LIberal Arts from Joliet Junior College. One day I was sitting around and started thinking about finishing my degree. Seeing as how this was post refuel outage, I was flush with cash and decided that spending a hundred bucks on the evaluation wouldn't hurt at all. So I dropped the C-note, and low and behold I ended up being 5 classes short of a B.S. in Nuclear Technology. I transferred in my A.A. Degree, some college pre-Navy, my Navy nuclear school, Equipment Operator training, and my SRO Cert training. I needed 5 credits of math, 3 credits of computer science, 3 credits of ethics, and the 2 required classes at Excelsior. I opted for the external sources option. I was able to take my math, computer science, and ethics at JJC, saving me money. I only needed to take 2 courses at Excelsior. I am in my last class now, and will graduate in April. All in I have only paid about $3000 for the degree. It doesn't hurt that I have tuition reimbursement, so actually I am paying nothing for my degree. On to Olivet Nazarene for a Masters in Organizational Leadership, which also won't cost me anything. read more

I'm a military vet who attended for one semester. I had to drop a class(dropped before the deadline) and cleared it with the VA. I decided that their online programs weren't for me and didn't attend again. Somehow or other, either thru clerical error or miscommunication, my tuition was never paid. Rather than contacting me and telling me this, when I finally did decide to to go back to a different school, I got placed on an academic hold because they wouldn't send my transcripts. All they did was cite policy and charge me $1000 dollars for two partial classes. I had no choice but to pay this extortionate price so I can continue my current schooling. It was nothing but a waste of time and money. I would not recommend this flaming circus to anyone. The paperwork is a hassle and none of it is as streamlined as they'd have you believe. Worst college experience I've ever had. All the classes are generic busy work with very little teacher engagement or learning. Need to talk to someone at the school? Good luck! If you ever do manage to get through to a person don't expect them to be helpful or have any idea what's going on. My adviser couldn't even tell me what classes I needed to take to finish my degree or what I had the prerequisites to take. She tried to sign me up for classes I couldn't even take, literally at the bottom of the description it says what you must have to take them but I guess reading that would be too hard. If you leave a message you'll most likely never hear back. They transfer your calls constantly and half the time send you to the wrong extension. They attempted to transfer my call to the veterans center and instead transferred me to the graduate student office. I'm not sure how you mix those two up. Overall I would rate my experience as one of the least professional out of any business I've dealt with. A $5 sandwich from Chick-fil-a comes with a far more professional experience than this "higher learning" institute. read more

I have been an independent learner for most of my adult life. After receiving my LPN, I had decided to move forward towards earning my RN Degree. With two young children at home and a fulltime job, a traditional classroom setting was not going to be a workable solution. I found Excelsior College (formerly Regents College & part of SUNY), and inquired about it with the NJ State Board of Nursing. They had only wonderful things to say about the school and fully endorsed it. In 1997, I finally earned my ADN degree. I am proud of the fact that I tested out of the entire program! Several years later, in 2007, I earned my BSN from Thomas Edison State College in NJ (there is an affiliate agreement between Excelsior and TESC). I have now returned to Excelsior for my MS in Nursing Administration & Leadership, and anticipating graduation in Spring of 2019. This has been a life-long goal of mine. My point is that we get out of any educational endeavor what we put into it. YOU need to take control over what you get out of programs such as the ones offered at Excelsior and Thomas Edison. If you would rather sit in a class and let others tell you what you should know, what does that do to your own critical thinking and reasoning skills? I am proud of the nurse that I've become, and how I achieved this goal. I completed my ASN and BSN through Excelsior College. I was given timely information, had a great experience with the financial aid department and all of my instructors. The CPNE was definitely a challenge but the college provided me with excellent resources. If you are a person who prefers online learning Excelsior is an excellent choice. Run! Their nursing program has a horrible pass rate. This college continues to lie on their website about their pass rates. They do not tell you that their pass rate prior to October was like 30%... this is horrible. I spent over $30,000 and numerous years at this school just to be failed at my CPNE by a male who sexually harassed me. I also was failed by misdirection on part of the CE. I was cheated out of my nursing degree due to the CE/CA lack of adequate preparedness of my exam by the staff. I wrote my appeal and won. So the college does accept responsibility for their actions. I completed my AAS in Nursing with Excelsior. It is Not a scam, it is fully accredited by the top two agencies in nursing accreditation, and has won Excellence in Nursing Education honors. Reports that this is a scam and a diploma mill are posted by persons unsuccessful in the program, and its a shame. This is Not an easy program, I think many enter this program thinking it will be. The final clinical IS very challenging, but they give you everything you need to be successful with study guides, additional classes, discussion boards, chat sessions, to name a few. People also complain that its a "Money pit", Really? Because a lot of the exams at EC cost about $200, whereas a traditional college class costs $1100, and you receive the same credit. Excelsior advertises flexibility for working professionals. When I enrolled, I was somewhat disappointed at the lack of flexibility, but it has become significantly worse. Independent study by CD ROM is being eliminated and most semester courses are squeezed into 8 weeks...no options. I don't know what they are thinking. I work 40-50 hours per week and the schedule for these classes is rigid. Plus, some require group project work. How can all these working professional rearrange all their schedules to do this. There is no option to order a transcript and have it placed on hold until grades are posted. But wait. There's more.... If you want to order your transcript with a rush just pay $42 and they might have your transcript in the mail in 3 business days. holy f*ck. They can't even e-mail transcripts via parchment. What year is it? Who is responsible for their geocities-like interface? It's embarrassing. Get your sh!t together Excelsior. Oh and another thing! I've been a college student for half my life it seems, and that's ok because I do enjoy learning new things. The problem is that at some point--if you still haven't figured out what you want to be when you grow up--you have to go get a real job and pay the bills. I've had a real job for a long time, which means finishing a college degree gets shoved into whatever little spare slices of time (and energy) I have left after the end of long weekdays, and whatever remnants of my weekend are left for studying. If this story sounds familiar and you are in the same boat, enter Excelsior College. First, let's tell it like it is: this isn't Harvard or Yale. Excelsior seems to cater primarily to transfer students (usually adults trying to finish out a degree started someplace else), military students, and nursing students. "Excelsior College, a member of the University of the State of New York, is a private college in Albany, New York offering associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs in Business, Technology, Liberal Arts, Health Sciences, and Nursing. Excelsior College is well-known for its flexible degree programs. Unlike most colleges and universities in the United States, Excelsior has no residency requirements, and many Excelsior degrees can be attained entirely remotely, and, in many cases, using mostly college credit earned elsewhere. " (Wikipedia) So--this is a quicker way than most schools to get your "papers", or to fill in some credits so you can transfer them to a school of your choice--one probably in your town made of real bricks and mortar. " With 30,000 students (none of whom you are ever likely to meet in person since it is a virtual university), and a tuition cost of under $10K per year, PLUS the flexibility of courses offered on-line as well as exams (you can attempt to test out of courses and earn credits) AND potentially--credit for work/life experience--if you really want to finish your degree but don't have time to go sit in a classroom, this is an excellent option. I have been a student for a few months, and this week, I am happy to report--I earned one of my degrees--but I am still working towards another as eventually I want to get my Master's (but will transfer my credits and apply to a more reputable local school when I do that). The lowdown: Prestige - 1 star Convenience and Flexibility - 5 stars Ways to Earn Credit - 5 stars Tuition Prices - 3 stars (a 3 credit class is $900...still not exactly cheap) Instruction - Meh--if you aren't totally self motivated and disciplined enough to learn things mostly on your own--this might not be the best college model for you. If you are however, 3+ stars. Keep in mind, when you go to an "on-line" college you are going to be missing out on all kinds of valuable additions to the whole college experience--like meeting other students, dorm life, and other social life :-) If you just graduated high school--go to a real college, even if you don't know what you want to be when you grow up--if you are an adult trying to get a degree out of the way--this is not a bad option to consider. p.s. - one of the best ways to get some undergrad credits out of the way is to take CLEP exams. I obtained credits through an exam which I needed in order to graduate from another University. Their registration and financial aid staff were so misinformed and unaware of basic and fundamental policies a d procedures. Standard requests we're handled poorly. It took several weeks and numerous calls and emails just to get them to verify that I took the course exam and passed (obtaining 3 credits). I received conflicting information from their staff who also refused to complete a standard consortium agreement. The university had to step in and contact them because their staff would not process the appropriate paperwork and once they finally agreed it took several weeks to get them to just sign off on a simple form. I can hardly imagine having to deal with them as an enrolled student after this horrendous experience with things that I consider to be so basic. read more

Excelsior College has been great to work with, I started a year and a half ago and got good assistance from the counselors there about my plan as well as options for different depths and a focus. They are not going to give you a degree, you will have to work for it but it will be worth it in the end. I noticed that most of the negative comments are about the nursing degree which I cannot comment on as I do not know the intricacies of the program nor the requirements from state to state, but I can tell you that they accepted all of my credits from many different universities towards my bachelor of science in Liberal Arts that I am getting closed to finishing. Two classes left (including my capstone) and I am a satisfied (but tired... working a full time job as well) student. Thanks Excelsior! read more
