Over the years I have tried many of the gyms in Annapolis. And at times have had membership at several simultaneously. Without a doubt, Evolutions was the right choice for me. Two things that will strike you immediately, the super friendly staff and it's cleanliness. Evolutions especially excels with the Pilates (Power) trainers and equipment. There are many certified trainers and open and reserved classes available throughout the week. One class of particular, Pilates Total Fitness is a great integration of pilates and strength training. Kelly D can really kick up the hour! Evolutions also has a great body work staff. Jack M, does intramuscular massage that might make you cry on the table but you leave with real and lasting results. Sauna needs updating too small also falling apart. Also the locker rooms need updating, locker doors falling off. Additioning they need to add more pm classes for people that work full time during the day. Good instructors but didn't like some of the music for the cycle classes. read more

If you like to have weights, tons of workout equipment, and endless options for classes including yoga, pilates, TRX, barre, cycling, etc - this is the place to go! I loved Evolutions from the first day I set foot in there for yoga. Since then I have also worked with a personal trainer, worked with their massage therapists, and taken some other classes. The atmosphere is bright and positive. It is much cleaner than any other gym I have ever been to. The staff and other gym members are incredibly friendly and supportive. I LOVE this gym! I have been a member at several gyms in Annapolis, DC, Alexandria, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Las Vegas over the years and this is by far my favorite gym! I primarily take classes - Cycle, Yoga, Barre, TRX, Kettlebell, Pilates - and most of the instructors here are awesome. They are very professional, knowledgeable and friendly and they keep the workouts challenging and inspired with lots of variety. As a mother of two children under 5, I highly recommend this gym because the childcare staff is amazing. They are warm, caring, attentive, and professional. The childcare area is very clean, in terms of both organization and sanitation. I enjoy the classes here, but I remain a member here due to the childcare. I know that my children are being supervised properly, and what's more-they are happy when I return, and don't mind being there. That helps me attend classes regularly. My review is based on observations from an initial visit and from a free one day pass. I am comparing my experience here with other yoga studios I've been and with another large fitness center in town. Pros: * Earnest and warm staff. To be honest, after reading other people's glowing review about the friendliness of the staff, I was on guard. I'm not really into all that touchy-feely mystical new-age-y stuff that are sometimes associated with "body clinics." Upon meeting the people at Evolution, though, I have to agree: these are some genuinely friendly and caring people. They explained everything clearly but were not pushy or self-aggrandizing. They seem to really want to see me finding the right place for me, even if it wasn't with them. * The locker room is nice. The showers are clean and stocked with towels. It's not as sparkly and fancy as the newer gyms in town, but it is perfectly serviceable. * While there are not rows and rows of equipments like in a big box store gym, what they have seem to be modern, in good shape, and plentiful for those who use it. * Good classes. They have a wide variety of classes tailored for students of different levels. I attended one yoga class. It was designated as "beginner/intermediate," but on the evening I went, there were 4 of us, and we were more beginner than intermediate, so the instructor modified the difficulty level of the workout to be more appropriate for us. She was clear in her explanation, and she checked each of us individually to make sure that we were doing it right. At 90 minutes, it was a well spaced class. Cons: * Well, it is somewhat expensive. You can either become a member and have access to all the equipments and classes or pay for the classes individually (with discounts if you get a 10-pack class card). The monthly membership fee is high compared to national chain gyms that are more tailored for equipment workouts. The price of the class cards is high compared to my old yoga studio (in a different city -- maybe Annapolis is just more $?). * Evolution is inside a sort of converted warehouse. This means that 1) the layout is a little weird, as another reviewer pointed out; 2) it's located kind of in the middle of nowhere. You'd be driving there just for the gym. There isn't really a place to grab a snack or a refreshing drink afterward. This isn't a big minus, just that I wished it were in a better location. Although I am unlikely to spring for the expensive membership, I've had a very positive experience with their classes, and will probably be back for more. read more

I joined the gym to begin working with a trainer, as well as working out on my own. I love the flexibility and benefits! Reasonably priced membership and you receive a ton of benefits! Classes are awesome, and instructors are great. When you arrive, you are always greeted with a smile by the staff. Everyone is friendly and super easy to talk to. Any questions I've had, have always been answered right away! I love the mobile app and the fact that I can sign up for classes through my phone! I will recommend Evolutions to all of my friends! Front desk staff barely acknowledges me when I walk in, even when I speak to them first. Cardio area is tight and you stare at a wall when using most machines. There is only one stair climber so it is difficult to get. I don't do the classes but people seem to love them. The facility is very clean, although one section has been closed for months for a renovation which looks more like repairs from water intrusion. I cancelled my membership and was not asked why, nor did the rep try to convince me otherwise. Not worth the money for me. read more

I moved from Annapolis to San Francisco three years ago and still mourn this gym. It's like a spa with treadmills, people. It was SO quiet and serene and the trainers were really, really helpful. It was nice for the owner to at least email me and get my take on the situation. Unfortunately I am ever more so angry at being kicked off a machine every time I see the trainers. It seems they are allowed to move freely but you are not allowed to move within there space, WHY, because you didn't pay them even though I am a paying customer. Remember this is not a gym rat gym just need to get that out there. A lot of people doing some great training. Palates, Yoga, TRX, and many other things from what I can see. If your looking for a gym with many heavy weight options then this place is probably not for you. Then there is the trainers with their training room, which your not allowed in, but they are allowed in all the other spaces. I really should learn to let things go but paying for a gym and being treated that way, spoke to like a child. I haven't done 18.5 years of military service, deployed to crap hole countries to be treated like a vagrant. The front desk people are nice, if there was .5 stars I would raise it to 1.5 read more

I was a member of evolutions for about a year before I had access to home work out equipment. It is a nice gym - very clean with a good selection of equipment. The most impressive part is the amazing schedule of pilates, yoga, and other exercise classes. I found the front desk staff to be snobby at times, and the layout of the place is very haphazard, but overall not a bad gym. read more

Besides the cleanliness of the facility there is nothing positive I can say about this gym. Many people in the area ask me for my recommendation of gyms to go to and I will not recommend Evolutions. Staff is not the most welcoming. Weight section is very tight and there is an additional section to workout but this is only for members who use pay for a trainer. Upon cancelling our membership no one on staff cared enough to ask why my wife and I were cancelling. I network and work with many people in the fitness industry so it's disappointing that I will have to refer people to the other gyms in the area. read more

Evolutions is easily the nicest gym in all of Annapolis. I visited a number of them when I first moved to the area and Evolutions was without equal. The staff are very personable and very helpful if you need anything. The equipment is high-end and well kept. There's a great selection of machines and free-weights and they offer a number of programs to include yoga, spinning, massage, personal trainers, and more. They even have a day-care in the building for those parents looking to get a workout in but need someone to look after their little ones. The only bad thing about Evolutions is that they spoil you and you'll never be happy with a lesser gym! read more

I'm not really sure if I'm in a spa or a gym? I swear the bamboo floors, accessories and the ambiance of this place sure feels like a spa! I could hang out in the locker room the whole time and just enjoy the sauna room, showers and all the little touches that make this place fitting for it's name. It is definitely more of a clinic than a gym. I've signed up for the yoga classes and the hot vinyassa yoga was amazing with Tina. I told my friend that it is completely different from the Bikram yoga that she likes. I did that a few times but hot vinyassa is definitely more my style. The room is small so get ready to be in close quarters but yoga is all about your own practice anyways and not about everything or everyone around you so that shouldn't matter. They dim the lights, turn on the soft music and go into breathing, stretching and improving our spirituality while getting an awesome workout. You get out of it as much as you put into it so the next day I was happy to feel my muscles. And that night I could remember the craziest adventures in my dreams because my head was super duper clear. My favorite part was doing the head stands and not feeling light headed. Love this place. It's a small enough gym that it isn't intimidating, but large enough that it has everything you need. The locker rooms are more like a spa than a gym, and their yoga classes are the best in town. Truly quiet yoga studio atmosphere, unlike the overly bright and loud yoga classes at other gyms. I moved to Annapolis around three years ago and joined Evolutions not knowing what to expect. I was immediately blown away by how friendly the staff, trainers, and other members are. I love the size of this gym (not too large where you feel overwhelmed with equipment), but plenty of machines and free weights to have more than enough options. I take a lot of classes at Evolutions, all of which have completely transformed me mentally and physically into a healthier person. This is no regular gym! Evolutions has so much more to offer. If you're into the crowded, show-off meathead gym, just keep walking. This is the best combination of yoga studio, barre studio, fitness center with TRX, spinning, weights, treadmills, personal trainers, etc, spa, Pilates and more! The locker/restrooms are nicer than my bathrooms at home! It is a woman-owned business that wins awards every year! Staff is great and knowledgeable. You can be a member and get unlimited gym time and classes or just gym. Off-peak membership gives a great discount. Highly recommend!!! read more

When I moved to Annapolis, I researched all of the gyms in town before joining Evolutions. I am so happy I joined this gym. All of the instructors and trainers are very knowledgeable and friendly and all of the classes are awesome! There is such a wide range of classes and instructors. Additionally, the facilities are always super clean and the equipment is well maintained. I've never seen any equipment "out of service" for months like at other gyms. read more

I wanted to join a club to become healthier, and Evolutions was one of the clubs I was interested in joining. The facility is nice, however, not one person was willing to show me how to use the machines. Not even the manager. I was told that I would have to hire one of their professional trainers and that person would show me how everything worked. It seemed like insult to injury that I had to pay to join to be a member, but yet no one was willing to show me the ropes even as a "member", I had to pay again to have one of their trainers show me. Other clubs jumped out of the seats to help, I only chose this one because of its location. I think that type of attitude is arrogant. read more

I just completed the summer sadhana, a 6 week study of the Chakras, designed by Pam Blum and brought to us by each of the excellent yoga teachers at Evolutions. We focused on one chakra each week through asanas, mudras, and reflections. Pam published a weekly review of each chakra, with insights and questions we could use for personal growth. I love the yoga community at Evolutions. It provides me a place where I can stop the action and busy-ness of the day and integrate my life on the mat, bringing physical, spiritual, social, and intellectual aspects together in a focused practice... and I carry peace and centeredness out with me, to my life off the mat. Evolutions is a gym and offers excellent and diverse classes and equipment for traditional exercise; the yoga studio is a sanctuary and a sangha (community). Sometimes you have to choose between good yoga and good exercise. Not at Evolutions. Teachers respectfully and knowledgeably blend both. read more

Evolutions is an oasis! Super clean, super friendly and super teachers who are soooo patient with their students and their needs. In addition to the regular classes, there is medical-therapeutic yoga for those with serious orthopedic issues. This makes Evolutions a SAFE place for those of us to exercise who have issues and are feeling discouraged and fearful. And there are all sorts of membership price points, no initiation fee, no cancellation penalties. You can have personal training without being a member and paying a membership fee. Giving this gym 3-stars mainly because of it's inconsistent policies. Love the front desk personnel who are most always professional. But on an overall management level, it just feels like there's always some plan being hatched to make more money off the backs of their loyal patrons. What's more, one trainer said that the owners told them that they are "not there to be friends with the clients." I don't want to be pals with the trainers either, but based on the fees this gym charges, I expect to feel like the people employed there are working for ME to keep me coming back. If there was an equivalent gym in the area, I would run to it, but for now, I don't have that choice. read more

It's a shame, this was once one of Annapolis' premier health clubs but lately has become more of a dive. While the classes and staff can still be good, the overall ambience has gone to hell quickly. It's as if they're trying to become a Gold's franchise! You've got meatheads slamming the equipment and some staff ignoring if not encouraging poor gym behavior. And in addition to the disruptive noise, you are occasionally treated to a bouquet of nasty smells, some mix of body odor wafting in the air. I'd look for a club where the management is focused on a positive experience for its clients! read more

If you go, sign up for FitLinx- it is great and check out all their classes for everything under the sun. I started working out at Evolutions a few months ago and have loved every minute of it! It has been my favorite gym so far. The classes are awesome and there are a lot different times offered to accommodate people. I recently took a travel job to NC and I miss this gym terribly! I recently joined Evolutions after trying out a number of gyms in the area. When you walk through the door it is instantly welcoming. The front desk staff greets you and is really helpful at answering questions and suggesting classes. I would compare the atmosphere of the gym to a spa that exudes healthy energy and encourages a fit lifestyle. I personally like to lift weights and found the weight area, as a women, nonthreatening and well maintained with a wide variety of equipment options. I also like all the class options and find the kettlebell classes to be my favorite. When I first joined the gym there was construction going on, but after asking at the front desk they explained that renovations were being done to update the women's restroom and fix the stretch area. After maybe a month of a large plastic screen and occasional construction noise, which was barely audible over my headphones, the stretch area has reopened. The women's bathroom is still under construction, but I hear the updates are very lovely and the room should open soon.
