    Mickey can play soccer
    Luci H.

The perfect place to grab some last-minute gifts for the people who aren't at the happiest place on earth! They have an assortment of all the classic gifts, pins, magnets, and shirts with a couple surprises. I won't pay $11 for a waffle magnet, but I was sure close. If anyone related to the pin-making department in Disney is reading this, please expand your offerings of Minnie playing sports. Right now, at Pop, Mickey has baseball, football, soccer, etc and Minnie only has cheerleading. Where my soccer-women at, Disney?! Despite the mild sexism on the pin selection, I encourage browsing this gift shop if you're staying at the resort. You almost have to, though, becuase it's smack dab in the middle of everything.

The store itself is huge! You can definitely spend a lot of time here. It's also a great spot to get you out of the heat. I was actually looking for something specific and I asked a cast member and they told me exactly where to find the item I was looking for. Great customer service! The store can get crowded at times, but the line moves quickly.

The front of the store where we entered had some toys and stuff, and as you got further back you'd find authentic Japanese items. I bought a fan here; they have chopsticks; little Japanese tchotchkes. You can even buy a kimono here! This store is really quite large, bigger than most of the stores I visited in the Disney World parks. Toward the back is a ton of candy and Japanese sweets. I bought lots of fun treats to share with friends and family, including the sakura KitKat that's hard to find outside Japan, I think. The staff were very friendly. They wrote my daughter's name on something we bought--perhaps the fan--in Hiragana. There's also a Kidcot stop right outside this shop (near the candy section), so you may want to check to see if that's still the case to give the kiddos something fun to do.

If…read moreyou love Disney merchandise but don't love paying full price, the Character Warehouse is absolutely worth a visit. The inventory is always changing, which is part of the fun. Some days it's fully stocked with incredible finds, and other days it's slim pickings. The store has become incredibly popular with resellers (I've even seen people live streaming while shopping!), so if something catches your eye, don't wait too long to grab it. I've found so many cool treasures here over the years--from park merchandise to Disney Cruise Line items--all at fantastic prices. It's essentially an overflow store for merchandise from the parks and cruise ships, so you never know what you'll discover. A few pro tips: there can be a line to get in, especially on weekends and during peak tourist seasons, so plan accordingly. And don't go in with a specific item in mind--this is more of a treasure hunt than a traditional shopping trip. Half the fun is not knowing what you'll find, and when you score an amazing Disney deal, it feels a little like finding pixie dust on clearance.

They had a little bit of everything! They had some incredibly detailed princess dresses that had original price tags that read $300+ listed at 1/3 of the price! I did find a spirit shirt here for $30- I love it just as much as the $100 one I got inside the park. My husband had a field day on tshirts for himself. The parks have a way of making you feel you need it all- this store makes it possible to take a little more magic home. The selection was all over the place from last years items, home decor, lounge fly bags, cruise items, and designer items. When we vacation here again this will definitely be one of our stops! It was close to closing time so we didn't see a lot of employees helping in the store but the cashiers were nice and helped us check out quickly.

But, I love the adorable Disney theme festive gear even on a hot summer day. In the past, I would give this place five stars. But on this visit, I was a bit disappointed. They used to have more variety. They would have on themed clothing, accessories, and more decorations than ornaments. They also used to have more decorations for other holidays, especially Halloween. I bought Haunted Mansion merch the time before this, a and squinted Jack Skellinton shirt before that, plus other things. They also used to have cute items to decorate your car, like the tiny mickey ears. Another complaint from this trip is that some families let their kids who were upper elementary school age, so not babies or toddlers, play ball around the ornaments, and throw items around, I know this sounds petty on my behalf, but really? Does not sound appropriate in a room full of glass. I will be back, but I do hope they return to selling a larger variety of merch.

The bright colors and paint all over the building spoke to me. Inside, it is pretty similar to other gift shops int he area. My hotel was on the same street as this gift shop. There are a total of 4 gifts shops (to my knowledge) in the same area. I hit all 4 just to check them out and compare. Also, I needed umbrellas, socks, and other miscellaneous things during my trip. I came in here looking for an umbrella and ended up looking at other random things. Yes, the pens I saw at the Publix were a dollar cheaper here, so if you want to get a few points of memorabilia from the trip, this isn't a bad place to do it. Toys, luggage, shot glasses and more... not all of it Disney or Universal related, there was a fair amount of just random Florida and Orlando merchandise, too. They didn't have the bead/charm items we were looking for, so we moved on, but others may find interest here (and cheaper than some of the parks though not necessarily any indication of quality or style).

Maybe it's because I'm older now, but I find the whole experience much more exhausting than I remember. It's incredibly hot, and it feels like everything has been engineered around getting you to spend money. Want to sit down somewhere? It seems like you need to be eating, drinking, shopping, or otherwise spending money to have access to a comfortable place to sit. Sometimes I just want to sit for a few minutes, enjoy the scenery, people-watch, and take a break without having to buy something. I don't care what age you are. Sometimes you just need somewhere to sit. The food was decent, but honestly, I can find good food in plenty of other places without having to navigate the whole parking situation, walk through security, and then spend money every time I turn around. The constant retail focus and pressure to spend money just doesn't create a particularly relaxed environment for me anymore. What's funny is that I remember coming here when I was 27 and being completely blown away by it. Back then, I thought Downtown Disney was incredible. I even spent a few nights going to the clubs, and those nights were absolutely epic and fun. I have some great memories from that time. But today, the experience feels different to me. Everything seems so carefully designed to extract another dollar from you that it starts to feel almost mercenary. There's nothing wrong with a business wanting to make money, but when the commercial aspect becomes so noticeable that it affects your ability to simply relax and enjoy being there, it changes the experience. I think I've reached a point where I'd rather spend my time somewhere with a lower-stress atmosphere. I want to go somewhere, walk around, enjoy the scenery, sit down when I feel like it, and have a good time without constantly feeling like every basic comfort comes with a price tag. Maybe it's me getting older. Maybe it's Disney Springs changing. Maybe it's both. But these days, I'd rather spend my money somewhere that makes me feel like a guest instead of a walking wallet.
