I saw acupuncturist Dr. Xiao Wu at East-West Healthcare Consultants to find relief for my lower…read moreback pain. Ultimately, I wanted her to help me fix the root of the problem -- two herniated discs in my lower back. After exhausting just about every standard method outside of surgery (meds, physical therapy, and epidural injections), I turned to acupuncture. Family, friends, and a chiropractor all suggested I try acupuncture. Everyone I know who's ever tried it loves it and raves about it. After calling around and getting a feel for various acupuncture offices in the Atlanta area, I settled on Dr. Wu. My friend and fellow Yelper Sarah T. highly recommended her. You can read Sarah's review on this site too. I'm no expert on acupuncture, but I tried to understand what I could from Dr. Wu. Acupuncture is holistic medicine, meaning a person's entire mind and body (psychological and physical) are treated. My acupuncture treatments were my first, and so far only, forays outside of American medicine. Acupuncture is considered Traditional Chinese Medicine ("TCM"). Dr. Wu's office is "low-tech." No computers or fancy equipment. Everything is recorded with pen and paper. Prepare for a lot of paperwork on your first visit. I saw Dr. Wu for over one dozen treatments. At each appointment, she took my pulse and looked at my tongue. By doing this, she was able to tell my body condition (stress level, inflammation, etc.). She was able tell me my level of qi (or "chi" - energy flow). All of this seems way out there, but hey, if acupuncture has lasted thousands of years and so many people have had positive results with it, there must be something to it, right? Acupuncture targets certain organs. Dr. Wu focused on targeting my kidneys (spine healing) and liver (muscle relaxation). During each treatment, she stuck me with about 12-15 needles. The placement of the needles varied each time, but most focused on my spine and my legs. Despite what is portrayed in the media, the needles hurt going in! Acupuncture can be a relaxing experience, but definitely not when the needles pierce your skin and muscle. The needles have different lengths. The ones that hurt the most going in were on the side of the knee and at the ankles. As the saying goes, "no pain, no gain." What I didn't expect was the electric stimulation. Apparently, this is standard procedure when it comes to acupuncture. Dr. Wu carted up a machine and clamped 3-4 electrical leads to certain needles stuck in my body. She then turned on an electric current to send electricity flowing through my body. It doesn't feel too bad, but it freaked me out the first time since I wasn't expecting it. A couple times, she turned up the electrical current too high and my leg started shaking uncontrollably! Now I know what getting tased or electrocuted feels like. Each treatment lasted about 20-25 minutes. Dr. Wu's practice is quite busy and she's a one-woman operation, taking phone calls, scheduling appointments, evaluating and treating patients, dispensing herbs, etc. It's really impressive all that she manages to do on her own. Despite the hectic schedule, she's still able to see all of her patients in a timely manner. An initial evaluation is $65 and treatments are $70 each. It gets expensive, especially since Dr. Wu recommends her patients get treated at least 2-3 times per week or more initially. Luckily, some health insurance plans cover at least part of the costs of acupuncture treatments. Also, acupuncture is eligible under medical flexible spending accounts. Every little bit helps. Dr. Wu doesn't file any claims. You have to do all the paperwork yourself. This is normal when it comes to acupuncture. Dr. Wu also prescribes herbs. The herbs are in pill form. I tried one bottle. To be honest, I have no idea what was in it and if it even helped me. All the bottle said on the outside was "Special Formula." I know what some of you may be thinking. I was skeptical too. I have to say though, after getting to know Dr. Wu, I think she is a genuine person and wouldn't try to sell a patient something they don't need. In the end, did I get relief for my lower back pain? Yes, but not as much as I was hoping. I was hoping for significant pain relief and healing. Herniated discs take a long time to heal (months), and in my case, I'm not sure if acupuncture was the answer. Dr. Wu said it would help speed up the healing process for me. If you are dealing with an ailment and "going to the doctor" hasn't helped, I do recommend seeing Dr. Wu and giving acupuncture a shot. It can't hurt. I ran into many of her patients coming and going to my appointments and they all seemed really pleased with her (some ecstatic). Clientele demographics ran the gamut, though I think she saw more females than males. East-West Healthcare Consultants is located next door to Phoenix and Dragon Bookstore and across the street from Target on Roswell Rd.

I initially booked a couple message based on a Groupon I found. The initial booking process was pretty easy and straight forward but unfortunately on the day my wife and I were unable to make the appointment. Out appointment was for 10:00 am and at 10:21 I received the following emails from Kim. I can understand her frustration and agree that I should have called but I was unable to. I am posting this email chain as-is. Kim: "I am writing this letter to inform you that you had an appointment with our facility today at 10:00 am . It's currently 10:21 am and our grace period allows for 15 minutes. We will wait a few more minutes but your Groupon will be redeemed at this time. You can use it towards additional services. We sent you an email and an intake form thats stayed this information. We hope that everything is ok. You can use your voucher towards another session. We are a small business and our time is valuable just as yours is. Thank you for your purchase and you can respond via email or give us a call." Response: "Sorry for the no show. The Groupon was not available to purchase so we were planning to pay the regular price. After looking at reviews and online photos we decided to go with another company. Again sorry for the inconvenience." Kim: "There is no problem with that except for he fact that I now am responsible for paying my employees because you decided not to cancel. This is totally unfair to a business. As far as review they are understood and maybe the review from an employee who was not of true best interest of my company and let go due them not understanding how it is to work for someone who bends over backwards for them. Only bad reviews were from her... a young lady inlet live in my faculty rent free with an alcohol problem. I hope you have a great session somewhere else. I just opened my business with no help and no funding somofviurse it's not a large company. I am now in debt $40 because I have to pay my employees. Please whenever you purchase something from somewhere or book have courtesy to cancel. They could have booked someone else. Kim Langston Owner 11 year self employed " Response: "Understand but as a "business owner" you should understand the concept of suck cost. You should budget for cancellations and should not send potential customers rude emails when they are unable to cancel their appointments. As the owner of the company, I would have at least expected a well written email. Poor grammar is unacceptable. I'll make sure to post this as-is. Thanks and good luck in your endeavors!"
