Okay, this could be weird because a) I'm clearly not an older adult age-wise, but maybe deep down I do have a heart of an older lady & b) I don't have a relative or family friend that is currently living here. BUT, I can say as a current graduate student of occupational therapy (shameless plug, if you have no idea what that is, ask me!) who has spent a lot of time in various assisted living facilities, this place is GREAT! I got a chance to speak to some of the residents while assessing the facility & the community is beautiful! The facilities are in tip-top shape & the services provided are above average. The staff seem to be very friendly & in-tune with the residents. When I'm 85+ & still kickin', please send me here! read more

HORRIBLE Management! mom and dad were/are there. they attached themselves to a kind worker who served them meals and made special meals just for them. dad died, mom is still there. then the MANAGEMENT fired the whole team that cared for our family. My husband is in Memory Care for only a week now. He came from the Reach facility. In Reach he received excellent care, although you had to keep in constant contact. Visit almost daily. Has since gone to Memory care where the care is not at all what I expected. He basically has an apartment, which is shared. He has meals, although it is up to him to get himself to the dining room, where they dispense medications. Came in the other day at 11:45am and he was just getting up and getting dressed. He had missed breakfast and learned later while eating lunch that he was not given his morning medications because he didn't come to breakfast. Later I was told that she tried to give them in the room but he refused. He has Huntingtons Disease and requires timed medications. This is Memory Care, he doesn't always know what to do. Called to make an appointment with the Head of Health Services to discuss exactly what services are provided. Doesn't get any assistance as far as personal needs. Only a shower twice a week. And this is only the first week. read more

Its only been a week but so far things have been pretty good. My mother is in the Long Term Care part of the campus. Like all health care facilities.....weekend staff borders on terrible, to few and no where to be found. The basic is all you get on the weekends. It is made up for during the week. It took a few days for everyone to figure out what she needed and how to deal with her but now she is participating in activities and even going swimming with a staff member on weekends. I have never seen any staff smoking anywhere and it is always clean. The food looks decent and there are a lot of activities on the campus including an art studio, chapel and 2 swimming pools, nice work out room and café area. Hopefully I will feel this way in a month. read more

I'm in town visiting family, and especially for my Aunt's 90th birthday party! She lives in this community and it is very nice. We had dinner there in the dining room on Friday and the food and service were excellent! Some of my family were fortunate to get to stay in their Guest Apartment which is nice. They've had breakfast in the Bistro which they've enjoyed. Today we had the big Catered party in the Recreation Room (I think it is called?) which had lots of comfy seating areas and tables and chairs. We had everything we needed in the kitchen, in addition to some things we brought ourselves. Nice place!! I know my Aunt is happy here and the local relatives are very close with her and know she is happy too. read more

My in-laws started at Laclede Groves in a lovely duplex patio home. They were very active in the Laclede community. After about 5 years they moved into a smaller, independent living apartment near the center of the community, due to my mother-in-law's worsening Parkinson's Disease. There they had easier access to the dining room and the Bistro, as well as activities and transportation. After a few years in the apartment, even with 24/7 private duty assistance, my mother-in-law's needs could not safely be met there. She moved into the Skilled Nursing Center. She's now been there for about 6 years. She has declined progressively, and my father-in-law has recently passed away. Though her physical needs are being met, and the registered nursing staff is competent and as attentive as they have the time to be, my mother-in-law's room is literally deteriorating around her. She is wheelchair-bound, has minimal use of her hands, can barely speak, cannot operate a phone, cannot feed herself, walk, or even reposition herself in her chair, and requires special equipment to move her into the bathroom, and between her chair and her bed. She is entirely dependent on staff for every aspect of her life. Her room is her world, and it's been allowed to deteriorate around her. I recently tried to clean some of the stains off the walls. I posted pictures on another review site. We have also found soiled Depends in the sink, and on this visit an unflushed toilet was left after a bathroom visit. She has lost clothing in the laundry, and received clothing belonging to other people. The footrest on her wheelchair lost its locking attachment and was unusable. I happened to find the missing parts rolling around in her underwear drawer. We were able to repair the chair ourselves with a nut from the hardware store. Nobody had notified us that it was in need of repair, and without the footrests her feet are left dangling unsupported when she's tilted back. That's bad for her legs. The many amenities, interior public spaces, building exteriors, and the grounds in the Laclede Groves community are lovely -- like the brochure! We understand that a skilled nursing environment is different, but damaged, dirty walls; large ugly carpet stains; soiled Depends in the sink; and the sight and smell of an unflushed toilet are completely unacceptable. These are Laclede's most vulnerable residents. The cost of skilled nursing care is about $10,000 per month. We are very discouraged with the state of things, and live 1,000 miles away. read more

My father was in the REACH short stay (rehab) area. We had a horrible experience. One day at 3:30 pm (my father had been there less than a week), I walked in to find him sitting alone in the dining area, slumped over in his wheelchair. No one was watching over him. He was sound asleep. It took a minute for me to wake him up. He asked me to take him to his room so he could go to bed. So I began wheeling him to his room. As we passed the nurses station, his nurse literally came running out and said "where are you taking him?" I stated that I am his daughter and was taking him to his room. She said "you can't do that. We are trying to keep him awake." Yes that is EXACTLY what she said. To make a long story short, she said he was sleeping too much (he's 97 years old and had been in the hospital 2 weeks) and they wanted him to stay awake. I told her that he did not look well at all and that he could hardly speak. After I was with him for about another 5 minutes, I became even more alarmed and I told her I wanted to speak with his doctor. I was told that the doctor was not available, but that the physician assistant (or nurse practitioner ---I cannot remember which she was) was available by phone. I spoke with her and told her that I wanted my dad taken immediately back to the hospital. They called an ambulance which took close to two hours (literally) to arrive. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure that night at the hospital. When I followed up with the REACH supervisors, I was told that (1) they had "just dropped him off at the dining area because the physical therapist said that is where he said he wanted to go; (2) another story I was told was that they were going to feed him an early dinner; and (3) was the nurse telling me directly that they were trying to keep him awake. My opinion is that they just were not taking good care of my father since no one was watching him at all and could not figure out that he actually needed to be back at the hospital. Thank God I showed up that day. I personally would never send a loved one to the REACH short stay area. I have no experience with the long term areas. read more

My father came to Laclede Groves after receiving sub standard care at another assisted center. He had multiple medical issues. I was over taken by how bright and clean it is. The staff always had smiles. It smells good and it's quiet and yet inviting. They took excellent care of my Dad and his needs. Even though my Dad's medical situation was beyond any one's help and he did pass away, his time that he stayed at Laclede Groves was one that we were very comfortable with. I highly recommend them for any one's needs in a Senior or assisted living facility. read more

A lot of the CNA's in REACH are lazy and uncaring if hard work is involved. The patients who require the least assistance are treated the best (which borders on good). The therapy staff only are driven by productivity standards. Some are very compassionate and are skilled at what they do. Others are just plain mean and uncaring; even shaming people into doing more than they can do. The facility is getting run down and these things are being neglected. The SMOKING AREA is right outside the patient windows. So while a patient is waiting to be helped with their light on they can look right outside to see their nurse or CNA puffing away while they sit and wait. Many times a day there are 5-10 people out there smoking, and the smell of the smoke comes into an open window of patient rooms. Senior leadership knows of these issues but do nothing to mitigate the problem. Too big to fail should be their motto. read more
