Location is about 1/2 mile from train station. I walked to train station to catch the Stonehenge tour. Next day walked through quaint town to Salisbury Cathedral (Magna Carta) and museum. If you have a good pair of walking shoes, you don't need to rent a car if you stay here. Met other travelers from the States during breakfast as well. Would stay here again, hands down. We had gotten to the point where we were going to backtrack to the last time we for sure knew where we were when all of a sudden my husband spotted a rare street sign, and we realized we had accidentally found the place. The owner had emailed me back in the States for our expected arrival time, and luckily we made it within our designated time frame. The B&B was small, but nicely maintained. I loved the bathroom - the skylight really brightened up the space. It was surprisingly quiet even though all the rooms are in close proximity. Our host explained that there would be a continental breakfast in the morning, and if we wanted something hot, we needed to make our selection the night before, so we each ordered the Full English Vegetarian Breakfast. Breakfast in the morning was efficient and hearty. The only downfall is that parking is very tight. We had to pull into the driveway because we weren't permitted to park on the street. This meant we were blocking in other cars, and we were blocked in ourselves when the last guests arrived. Luckily, no one needed to leave in a hurry!

We were woken 3 out of 5 nights at 4am by owners walking around outside on gravel. Makes this cottage a 2.5* at best! Not impressed! Seriously does Visit England really rate this cottage 4*? Shame as it's spacious and has good potential to be a nice home from home.

The cottage (we stayed in the Keeper's Cottage) included all the amentities you could want, such as comfy leather furniture, a dreamy superking comfy bed, good showers, and lovely original artwork by the owner in all of the rooms. Pretty, but not overdone at all. My partner was pleased that there were tv's and dvd players in all of the rooms and some DVD's were provided as well, along with games and loads of brochures offering ideas about what to do during our stay. Just as lovely as the inside, was the views from our personal gated patio. We looked over onto a quiet horse pasture which is known for featuring deer (though we didn't see any on our trip unfortunately). However, every morning when we woke up, a lovely dark brown rescue pony grazed just outside our bedroom window. Farm cats wandered by now and again, and fat curious chickens came for a visit every day as well. These were the same chickens who provided us with farm fresh eggs for breakfast. It was incredibly peaceful hearing the horses neighing across the field to one another or the owls hooting in the evenings. Just the sort of romantic get-away we had been craving. That being said, there's plenty of room in the cottage for groups too. However, if you opt to leave everyone else at home like we did, there is often a discount available for only using one of the two bathrooms and/or not using the extra bedroom. This isn't as central a location to the New Forest as lots of other cottage options, but you can't beat it for privacy and solitude. The owners seem like very kind people who seem to be up for a chat if we want one, but more than happy to leave us alone if we prefer it, which we respected. We loved that all the fixings for tea and/or coffee with yummy biscuits was waiting for us when we arrived. I can't say enough good things and we can't wait to go back again someday!

My prejudice has been challenged by Castleton House and found wanting. Castleton House gets a 4 star rating from the AA and Enjoy England. It's a well deserved rating and one that is maintained consistently. On arrival we were warmly greeted by Gail Garbutt (the owner). A quick tour of the main areas followed, the dining room and roomy drawing room. Both were furnished in a solidly comfortable and tasteful way. Staying in a b&b can sometimes be challenging as other people's hygiene and taste may differ from one's own - not in this case. We were given a quick tour of our room - a spotless, twin bedded room with a large en-suite bathroom, fridge and tea and cofee-making facilities. Once we had the room to ourselves I checked under the beds for cleanliness - spotless. Ditto the bathroom in every conceivable nook and cranny - spotless again. The fridge was clean and stocked with a complementary bottle of wine and good local beer. The beds were made-up with crisp, clean linens and there was an additional stock, plus clean blankets and towels if we needed them. The next morning saw us treated to a (pre-ordered) breakfast of wonderful quality. Cooked breakfasts, continental breakfasts and special dishes like kippers, scrambled eggs or the like were proffered swiftly on good china. Much of the produce served at breakfast was locally sourced. The honey was not only delicious but gathered by Gail and her husband from their own hives (in case bees put you off visiting - these are 4 miles away!). Excellent tea and coffee was also on hand and topped up with minimum fuss. The whole experience was just lovely. Gail served us throughout our stay and was chatty, welcoming and helpful, but never intrusive. We really could not have asked for more. I thoroughly recommend Castleton House either for a short stay (perhaps a stop-off) or ideally, as a base for a few days walking or cycling in the surrounding countryside. Stourhead is not far away and there are many private estates nearby offering excellent walking, cycling and riding paths and facilities. Try it, you've nothing to lose and everything to enjoy.

We found the staff to be very friendly and they even gave us a lift back in the early hours as all the taxi companies had closed (it was a Sunday!). Not the cheapest of places - x5 drinks cost £25 a roundOUCH, but a very nice venue and a lovely setting for a wedding.

This is the kind of place that gives English hotels a bad name. I can see easily how tourists will get taken in by the beautifully presented website and feel like they've been seriously ripped off when they get shown into their cupboard of a room, before being fleeced in the bar. A lot of people come here for the spa attached to the hotel. It's really not worth making a special journey. The spa is tiny, has very few facilities, and isn't all that relaxing, due to the fact that there's at least one door that slams itself shut very loudly whenever anyone walks through it. The spa dealt with, onto the hotel. We were put into what is basically an attic room, and a tiny one at that. To be fair, the website makes no secret of the fact that these rooms 'feature sloped ceilings'. It doesn't tell you, however, that you are tucked into the slope so much that even my wife, a tiny 5'0" woman, found it difficult to navigate around the room. For my part, I was unable to stand up to pee and anyone taller than an average two year old child shouldn't expect to be able to take a shower. For £135 per night (and they usually ask for a minimum 2 night stay at the weekends) you really expect much better, even at a hotel that thinks it's at the premium end of the market. On the positive side, dinner at the hotel restaurant was passable, if overpriced by 25%. The food was well cooked and presented, although I was very disappointed that when I ordered a side dish of new potatoes I wasn't informed that the main dish I'd ordered already came with potatoes. For anything other than dinner, travel into one of the nearby towns and avoid eating at the hotel bar. The tuna used for one of my open sandwiches tasted like it came out of the tin, and the crab mayo for my other sandwich was massively over-seasoned, to the point of being inedible (I'd have sent it back except that staff had disappeared, possibly out of shame). The biggest laugh came with the pretentiously arranged 'fat chips' that we'd ordered: 12 soggy chips for £3. The only reason this hotel gets two stars is because it really is in a lovely location, and I suspect if you're willing to pay through the nose, the more expensive rooms might be passable. The staff here are really friendly and willing. It's just such a shame that the hotel they're working at doesn't deserve them. The lady is so nice and accommodating. The breakfast is lovely. It starts as you would expect with choices of traditional English breakfast, but then goes far above with crepes, kipper, poached eggs. This is a very well kept house as you can see from the photographs, but you have to see it in real life to really appreciate the time and effort that they have put into making their guest feel welcome. The atmosphere is both friendly and helpful to both foreign guests and local business customers alike. This is what I would call a guest house and a bit more on top. Absolutely everything has been thought of!

But looking at the Crown from the side, it's almost as big - four stories high and several house-depths back. Recently refurbished, it operates as hotel with large public bar, just as it used to. The facade isn't quite so imposing as the George, being more plain/classical, but it's smart and smooth. Inside, I remember many a Christmas Eve in the jam-packed main bar, juke-box blaring out and the dark wood panelling seeming to hold in the smoke and salt & vinigar crisp aroma actually it had a great atmosphere and was always a must-stop on a pub crawl. Nowadays the bars have all been opened out, lighter wood flooring and lighter walls, all rather smart looking - but to me personally it doesn't have quite the same character as before. It's still popular with it's regulars, and there are usually interesting ads for new guest beers, or bar-special offers. Give it a go - it's been carefully restored and well worth spending time for a pint in.
