Honestly, what's not to love about Evangeline's? I've been coming here for gifts and just to look around while in Old Sac for years! It's a must when in the area! So many unique items - gag gifts, naughty gifts, a whole glow in the dark section, T-shirts, magnets, jewelry - you name it! They have a whole Hello Kitty section, a mushroom themed section and even an Alien themed section, just to name a few. You can find it all and so much more at Evangeline's - it's really an amazing store! I could spend so much time looking at every section and item. Most items are fairly priced, but as with most small businesses, a lot of stuff is sometimes on the pricy side. My old review pretty much sums up my feelings about Evangeline's. One of the best shops in Old Sac. and in town! It's nice that the costume section is now open all year long instead of just during the Halloween season like they did in the distant past. It has been a few years since I have been back since my fiancée Joe K. had passed away. We both loved to dress up for Halloween, Sci fi/fantasy conventions and Yelp themed events. We had a lot of commonalities together. At first, I was a bit melancholy about entering the store, but this time, I came here with my sister to look for an outfit that she could wear for her grandchild's "Frozen" themed birthday party. We found a suitable dress that she seemed to like, but she didn't want to try it on first, thinking it was the correct size to fit her. However, it was a disappointment when she finally tried it on at home. First, it looked too big on her. The attached sashes were placed in an unflattering location on the dress, and all the glitter that was glued on, made a huge mess everywhere! Also, the long blonde wig that we had chosen in it's package, turned out to have grey streaks in it! Bad choices on both of our parts! Even though our shopping trip here didn't fulfill what her hopes were, I still have to give this business five stars, because our selections were not their fault. Evangeline's is still one of my favorite places to visit and to reminisce about the happy times Joe K and I shared together. This place is a staple here in Old Sac. The go to place for unique things and especially costumes and that is what we needed today. They have several floors of outfits and great stuff to look at and buy. We were going to a Disco party and needed some outfits. Some people go all out at these events so we didn't want to disappoint the crowd. I had called ahead and the girl said they had a lot of stuff for Disco on the third floor. My wife and I went up there and found lots of stuff. We picked out the ones we liked and tried them on it the dressing rooms. They are in the back. They fit but needed a little TLC. No problem since my wife can sew. We got the two outfits and we were the hit of the Disco Ball. Sweet. So many compliments on our outfits. We where walking around Old Sacramento decided to come in to this store . I love coustumes and Halloween even in the month of December lol ! There is a cool elevator in the front or u can take the stairs ! There is 3 floors of costume heaven here !! We walked in I was amazed by the decor in the store ! It's set up super organized by theme for example Pirates theme area ect ...There is 3 levels of floors of this so,if u need any theme costumes they will have it here . The first level is the gift shop the other two is all costumes !Every section has its own decor also . Super cool store to walk around and find a costume . This establishment has been here for years. I remember coming here when I younger, high school. Trying not to age myself. I came here looking for a disco outfit for a disco themed event. You can purchase costumes year round. They have a wide variety of costumes. The sections of the store are themed, making it easier to look for things. Costume Mansion Such a unique and fun store located at the Old Sac Waterfront. I've seen many Yelp friends visit this place for Halloween costumes but this was my first time at Evangeline's. Inside was busy, not only with customers but plenty of merchandise to peruse and look at, I mean, every inch of the store has stuff... not your average shopping experience, that's for sure. One could spend hours here... and that's only on the first floor. I didn't realize that Evangeline's room is a three story mansion. Will have to come back another time to see the other two floors. We were strapped for time... Evangeline's is the ultimate novelty store. From all the items I saw on the first floor you'll be able to find the most random and fun things you can think of here. I have been a MAJOR fan of Evangeline's for 20+ years. Since I'm a nut for costumes this is the best spot in all of California and that is saying a lot! Los Angeles has some great places but this one has 3+ floors of beautiful costumes and all the accoutrements you could possibly want. I just love the greeting card selection also. It had been at least 7 years since I'd had the pleasure of shopping here and I was thrilled and surprised that they decided to keep the costume mansion on the 3rd floor open all year now. It used to only be open September until January but don't quote me. I was so happy to be able to just walk over on my birthday and shop by myself! This is the kind of store you don't want anyone to rush you to hurry up, especially after such a very long time. I have started to sell my costumes and decorations the last few years since we didn't get any trick or treaters on our street. But I definitely hit up the greeting cards. I love to keep a stash of cards in my desk to just have. Having to go to the store to pick up a birthday card is so annoying so that's why I love to collect the latest and greatest! If you ever find yourself downtown you must take a peek inside; it's a delight for the senses. And if you're in need of a costume this is the place. I have not been here in years and boy am I happy I stopped in. As I said I have not been here in forever and a day and wanted to show a newcomer to town the costume shop; unfortunately the costume part was closed and I don't think I have ever browsed this part of the store. Boy was I missing out! Hands down this place is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! It has so many random niche pieces and pop culture sections and just really something for everyone. And the BEAT part is things we're so reasonably priced! Like I was in shock at the pricing! We left the store with a beginner box of crystals, an amethyst and tiger eye bracelet, and of course some whacky slippers . I will definitely be back to grab the glow in the dark headband for $8.99 before Sol Blume festival. Pros: Best selection in town for the type of stuff they sell. Decent prices, which is a great surprise considering being in a tourist location where most stores are overpriced accordingly. Smart business move - enables them to sell a lot. Cons: They'll close early if they feel they're not getting a lot of customers on any given day. A major bummer if you traveled there during business hours and paid for parking just to get turned away. Half the staff are friendly while the other half are rude and lazy. A lot of their wares are hung high up and you need to get an employee to help retrieve the stuff you want to buy. Half the staff refuse to do so and also don't allow you to retrieve it yourself. read more

I can imagine how much fun the buyer has in selecting all the literally millions of items packed into its retail space. If you really love Halloween costumes or into kinky fantasy dress ups this might be the place for you! Many people like us enter for curiosity or to fill up an hour or so going floor to floor with merchandise to the ceiling and just enough space to walk through the aisles and maze like set up of their floor plan . I found some quirky things for our preschool Bud to get a kick out of: a hairy blondish mustache, an elk head prop and a tiny black plastic baby rat as he tried to scare us this past October with a bigger scarier looking one at his house. I love Evangeline's. It's such a cool store to explore. There are three floors and different rooms, each with their own theme - the old west and roaring 20s (my fave), pirates, fairy tales and wizards, 60s-70s-80s area, circus attire, witches and vampires, sexy costumes, silly costumes, period dresses, wigs, jewelry, props, shoes, and all the accessories you might need for costume theme parties and/or Halloween. The costumes are high quality not those cheap ones you find at party city. One time they had a replica of Rose's dress from Titanic. And the 20s flapper dresses are gorgeous. Not sure if they still do this but pre covid, they let you try on wigs. You pay a quarter for a hair net and try on as many wigs as you want. I always bring out of town guests to this place b/c its so unique and fun. The building has a history too. The Lady Adams Building is one of oldest buildings in Old Town. It survived the 1852 fire and at one point was a brothel and flophouse. read more

We stopped in old town Sacramento on our road trip back home from Lake Tahoe. I can definitely spend hours in here. There's so much to look at and so much to try on and have fun with. We basically had a fashion show in each costume category and the workers were so cool about it. They keep mirrors throughout the store and also have fitting rooms. There's two stories full of costumes, it seem like there was an unlimited amount of accessories and props. Their selection of wigs and costume makeup are huge. From friendly customer service that's helpful and patient to a wide selection of costumes from affordable to quality goods. The main floor is a gift shop but the entire 2nd and 3rd floors are dedicated to costumes and every accessory you could imagine. Jewelry, shoes, masks, wigs, tights, weapons, tiaras and crowns...I could go on forever. You could literally spend a few hours in here and you still might miss something because every space is packed. It is very well organized though with each section dedicated to a particular theme. The layout can get a bit confusing, so be sure to check the signs or ask the staff for help if you're looking for something specific. The costumes can range from Halloween store quality to legit/ high quality and you definitely get what you pay for. Around Halloween they do have more of the typical costumes, but this is a much better spot to look for pieces than other big box stores. We were recommended to come here especially since Halloween is so close and we did not find a costume yet. The wait time was about 8-10 minutes. We thought it would be longer because the line was soooooo long. There were guys at the entrance monitoring the entrance and exit. They kept count of the number of people entering and exiting. They were very friendly and was talking to us while we were waiting for our turn to enter. The guy at the entrance recommended that we start on the third floor then work our way down. When we got to the third floor. OMG! There were so many costumes and A LOT of people. It was very crowded and hot. We had to squeeze by people that's how full the shop was. It was like that one every floor. I loved how they had certain themes bunched together and they used every spaced they had. They had the shoes, wigs, masks, accessories, whole outfit! I feel that the prices were pretty comparable to other places that sell costumes. The first floor had more of kids costumes and toys. They also had an 18+ room that was behind the curtain in the kids area.... which I thought was weird... It was so convenient to get costumes and all the accessories for the whole family in one location. It's a pretty cool shop to get gifts as well. The first floor had the gifts, cards, toys, prank material, etc. The stairs were a little steep and it was narrow, definitely be careful. They do have an elevator but the wait time was long. The store is unique but there are items that have a vulgar language which I would not recommend for little kids to go there nor for Catholic to support it because the store sales items that with image of the Jesus, especifically the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with the face of celebrities which this is VERY OFFENSIVE to our FAITH. I had good expectations of this store but now I don't and I will not want to spend my money there until those disrespectful items of Jesus and Mother Mary are sold there. read more

Every time we go in there I laugh my butt off and find something so cool I just have to have it. Corina's Daughter moved to Portland last year and on her first visit back to Sacramento we ask what she wanted to do first? She said go to Evangeline's! They are very well stocked with fun items you probably are not going to find in other stores. We have things all through our home that came from here. Corina is practical joker at her office so she has to keep a good supply of rubber spiders and snakes. She stocks up at this store. Now they have costumes in the store upstairs and they have some excellent ones too. No matter what you want to dress up as they probably have the outfit for you or they can get it for you. They have three floors of the entire costume store. Each floor has a theme, and it's so cool! They have mannequins hung up on the walls dressed up in their respective area's theme. They decorate the entire floor and play music to match the vibe. It is truly an experience! I feel like they have such an amazing variety of costumes too, which is always ideal. The first floor I believe is a goofy gift shop with various cool trinkets and fun gifts. The second and third floor is where all the cool decor and costumes are. I have not been here or really Old Sac in years. I forgot how fun this store was! We spent an hour and half and still didn't really see everything. Part of the reason for the long browsing session is that much of the humor comes from reading a lot clever and silly signs, pins, mugs etc... I particularly loved this card that said "Tickling: There is a fine line between making you laugh or getting you punched in the face." because I can totally relate! What is unique is massive assortment of fun gag gifts or novelty items you don't normally see mostly cost less than $10. I picked up a few gift items along with a few for myself and my total was $15. What a deal! The store is packed. There is not a lot of empty floor space so with that said, it can get super crowded on a busy day. Not for the claustrophobic. Only qualm I have is that they seem to have very few employees. I never saw anyone on the floor to ask questions to or be around to help people. I also have to wonder if the shrink is enormously high. But definitely a MUST-Go when visiting Old Sac. Had a great time here browsing. read more

This is THE costume store! All year round, way better than the often kid-occupied pop up Spirit stores. You can find just about any type of adult costume you can think of here from circus ringleader to your favorite superhero, but really sexified (lol, is that a word?). I love the props they have like the brains (good for putting beneath some bananas and apples in a fruit bowl I was told) and good quality fake blood. There is also the section where the costumes take a kinky turn with whips, corsets, knee high boots with more metal than a Metallica concert. Love this place.
