Lucky for me, this store was the final stop for my mattress odyssey, that began when I realized that my old mattress was aggravating some physical issues. My quest to find a mattress had two key factors--it could not off-gas chemical smells or other toxins, and it had to be very comfortable for some existing physical issues that have been the subject of multiple surgeries. After trying three online options from so-called top producers, it was apparent that I had to actually experience the mattress before bringing it into my home and risk yet another mattress going into the landfill. My experience with the online mattress companies, were that they over-promised and under-delivered. I will go into detail for those who want to hear about it, below. I drove an extra 2.5 hours, one way, to get to this store that sells the Berkeley Ergonomics mattress system, because the staff I encountered on the phone, Sierra and Jamie, were very knowledgeable about the product, were not in a huge hurry to get me off the phone and were not pushing any particular outcome with purchase of a mattress. After spending a few hours in this store, I was able to select a mattress and foundation- rack system that met both my needs and life partner. Unlike many mattresses, each type of mattress came in 2-4 levels of support so there is quite a bit to choose from. With the addition of the bed foundation, there is a fitting process where the slats are adjusted to support the user according to a few factors such as body type and sleeping position. We selected a hybrid with double coils and latex pad with wool and organic cotton. My partner calls the bed magic, because he sleeps so soundly in the supportive but comfortable bed. I no longer wake up in pain, the bed did not off-gas and we are still in the "break-in" period of 2-3 weeks. Since our home was outside of their delivery route, we paid a little more, but the mattress and foundation was cheerfully delivered by the owner, and an assistant well within 2.5 weeks of ordering it. For those deciding whether its actually easier to get a mattress online for a "free trial," please consider my experience. The first mattress, an Avocado hybrid, was delivered and my old mattress taken away. It only took one night to realize that my body could not withstand the inflexibility of that mattress, made with a cheaper process of latex, cheaper coil systems that can be squashed into a box all of which is tightened with tufts on the mattress. It felt like sleeping on a pile of tires. Returning the mattress was difficult, because they have an eco-babble team, that tells you to find a "home for your mattress," even though most places will not accept a used mattress for sanitation purposes. I had a long-winded argument with this company to get them to come get it, and it appeared destined for the land-fill after it was dragged out across my yard through a muddy walkway. So much for green sustainability. So here I was without a mattress, so I ended up setting up in my living room on a short twin mattress that had to be augmented with a latex pad [$350.] to make it survivable while I got a new mattress. The next online experience was with SAATVA, who delivered a mattress that was supposed to be covered in 100% organic cotton, but was in fact mixed with thistle, which I am allergic to. The mattress also off-gassed, because it uses memory foam on the top layer of their hybrid mattress. I also woke up in more pain than ever, with numb arms, stiff back and neck. The off-gassing and thistle left me itching and with a headache. The customer service there is responsive, but once I wanted to return it, they became very self-righteous. I asked them not to call me with my email request for a return, but a manager did anyway. He suggested that I must be a "princess" because I found the mattress uncomfortable. I was credited for the mattress, but still am hassling a return of purchased sheets and pillows, that were returned and not credited--nearly $400. The next candidate was the Casper mattress, also in a box, that was never even slept on because it is so gassy. It is made of Certi-Pure foam, which "certifies" that the foam is not as terrible as it might be. This is an industry standard that is basically standard-less, in that the industry invented the standards. Think fox guarding hen house...The off-gassing made me dizzy and disoriented. It had to be removed from my house to the backyard while waiting for its return. The online experience is not worth the hassle of dealing with faceless people who cannot really assist a customer with selecting the right product. I suspect that many of these returns end up in the land-fills because they cannot be used by the few places that accept them. read more

UPDATE: I do LOVE my mattress I bought at this store, and I received EXCELLENT customer service! The salesperson explained in detail to me how each type of latex was made, and I tried beds in the store for quite a while on two occasions. The slat system that I bought at a DIFFERENT store still does not work for me, but it may very well work great for others. read more

We have had two of the Oxygen pillows that were custom fitted and they are the best! ESD, will custom fit the pillow to your specific requirements. We also have one of their queen size beds for our guests. The guests always comment on how comfortable the mattress is, and its not warm like their other mattress. Love their mattresses! I own 3 and have received excellent customer service. Not to mention the heart behind the owners. It is not just about another sale they truly believe in helping others. The bless many children who are battling cancer with mattresses through a non profit I run - Sweet Dreams Foundation. I feel incredibly blessed and sleep so peacefully knowing my kids and I aren't sleeping on chemical mattresses especially watching so many kids battle cancer. Make sure you know that if you get a pillow, return it right away if it doesn't work out. I was never told anything about their return policy when I bought my VERY expensive Oxygen Pillow. I tried it out at the store, liked it, paid A LOT and there we go. I tried it out for 3 nights and found that it didn't feel right - too high? Too firm? I live far away, am a busy full time working mom... Came in 30 days later and there is nothing they can do - no returning, no exchanging, nothing. OH! I could get a 15% off a NEW pillow? Huh! No thanks. I like this place a lot, just be careful when spending what it takes to shop here. read more

I've waited nine months to post my review. As a repeat customer who had an exceptional buying experience with ESD, I wanted to be sure that my recent purchase matched the same quality I had with my first bed which was bought more than 13 years ago. I also wanted ample time and experience with the mattress and electronic bed frame. I've never owned this type of bed. I am extremely happy beyond all my expectations. This bed has improved my health- not just my sleep. I struggle with back and hip pain which often wakes me up during the night. Good sleep is integral to managing my pain. We haven't received our mattress yet. I am only commenting on our experience at the store. We were very impressed with Caitlyn, the service representative. My wife spent 2.5 hours with her on day one. The following day, with me in tow, we spent another 2 hours with her. Caitlyn was very knowledgeable about all products in the store. Her patience was incredible as she had to explain things multiple times to us. I am sure she has to do that all day long and still keeps a smile on her face. We bought a mattress and pillows. We LOVE our bed, quality of sleep and comfort is the best I can imagine. We have a king with each side a different mattress with our preferred firmness, nighttime reverie 9T adjustable platform. We had a part malfunction on the bed, I called European Sleep Design and they quickly scheduled and sent over Tyler and Dan who were pleasant, courteous, and thorough. They figured out the problem and replaced the parts quickly, perfect repair and service experience (thanks for wearing masks also). 100% would buy from European Sleep Design again. read more

My husband and I came across European Sleep Design as we were looking for a non toxic mattress due to our research on the toxic fire retardants used on mattresses as well as the toxins in the off gassing from major memory foam mattress brands. Coming from a medical background he liked the health consciousness of latex which is used on hospital beds as it is cleaner, healthier and non toxic. My husband has a preference towards the European slat system over boxspring system due to his experience with the slat system growing up in Europe. Upon walking into the store we learned that the sales team does not work on commission. Caitlyn, the ESD specialist was very helpful in educating us on the product and health and safety behind their choices. This was very important to us and my husband came with a list of questions on health, safety, and back support all which were answered to our liking. He has herniated disks and has thwarted off back surgery with physical therapy and requires a bed with a lot of support for his back. While I am 100lbs lighter 8" shorter than him and require a bed much softer. That being said we need two totally different mattresses. We started trying mattresses and Caytlin was wonderful at not influencing our decision. She would check alignment, adjust the pillow choice or the support on the slat system but otherwise left all the decisions up to us. We spent 2.5hours on these beds as we had driven 3hours to come to this specific store and wanted to make a decision that day. This ESD bed was under $3500 which included the king mattress, slat system, and their most expensive base, tax. So we felt like we got a great value. The bed was delivered 3 weeks later. We've now slept on the bed for 1 week. There was never any smell or off gassing from the bed which was such a relief. The mattress is much firmer than the floor models. We were told the mattress and slat system would take a month to break in. That being said, we aren't thrilled with the overly firm bed as is and hate the idea of spending $700 on their latex mattress topper as a temporary fix until the bed breaks in. We have the opportunity to switch out parts but my side of the mattress is already the softest of the soft for this model so I don't think they can do much for me. However, I'm confident that once things break in they will be as comfortable as the floor model. I give them 4 stars for the product, service, and health benefits. However will hold off and give a final review after a month. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE these mattresses and adjustable slatted foundations. WAY better than run of the mill old mattresses and box springs. These beds are all over Europe. Most comfortable ever. These guys are great! My dad purchased a bed here many years ago and they were very kind and patient, just a couple of years ago my dad accidentally damaged his bed covering/slip cover, we called to see if it could be replaced, they said it was an obsolete model and wasn't available. They called us back later and said they had the same covering in their where house and sent it to us for free!! In these days of big chains with inconsistent service and toxic products, we are very happy with ESD. Their products don't contain all the chemicals that you find elsewhere. There's no out gassing of harmful fumes laden with chemicals that aren't good for you. Their products are all natural and their furniture line is made in America. The mattresses are incredibly comfrotable. We have purchased now four beds from ESD and are very happy with the quality and comfort of the product. And they have great customer service. Jill and Chip are top notch owners that truly care about their customers. My advice: stay away from chains that sell cheap toxic crap from China. So I'm walking through West Coast Green (awesome green building/lifestyle conference) and find myself chatting with European Sleep Works, then sitting on their model mattress, then laying down and trying the BEST PILLOW EVER...not that one too many glasses of wine the night before had anything to do with taking a wee break! Anyway, the Oxygen pillow, sigh, was really amazing. So amazing that two days later I found myself at European Sleep Design in Folsom, buying my Medium+1 (yes, they even fit you for this bad boy). Jill and Jane, two lovely and incredibly knowledgeable ladies were awesome help and I walked out knowing full well I'd be back for the entire sleep system...mattress, more pillows and lovely organic sheets. We started out looking in the usual places for a mattress. While looking for reviews comparing two big brand names I ran across a forum talking about local mfr's and how to get not only better value for the $$$ but a better mattress as well. ESD in Folsom just happens to sell one of these lines. The product itself is great, but of course this is a business review. The staff at ESD is great. They absolutely take the time to work with you and figure out what you need. Unlike the big name stores, these guys really know what they're selling. Not just the talking points of the features, but they actually understand how their product works and that helps them get you the right product if you decide to purchase. My wife and I have now purchased 2X from here. Our first purchase was nearly 10 years ago and is still our primary bed mattress in our home. 3 weeks ago I purchased a second mattress and had it shipped out of state to a vacation home. I was a little nervous knowing that it might be a real pain to deal with any shipping issues such as damage or returns... that said,. the mattress arrived today the shipment was perfect, the mattresses were boxed and protected well and were delivered without a hitch. I had originally purchased a sleep system from European Sleep Design about 5 years ago. This bed is the most comfortable bed I have ever owned! Lately, my son has been complaining about the "brand name" mattress that he is sleeping on. He recently asked me "Why can't I have a bed like yours; mine is uncomfortable?" I guess I never really gave it much thought; that if I had a nice comfy mattress, why shouldn't I want the same for my son? After a few minutes, I told him that I have decided to get him one as well. He is very happy. My son has asthma, and I think that the natural materials are better for him; no chemicals and funny smells. Jill and Chip are friendly and very knowledgeable and always give such wonderful customer service! They are very concerned about their customers and want everyone to get a good night's sleep. If anyone reading this is thinking about going shopping for a new mattrress, I would suggest stopping in and taking one of their sleep systems for a test spin! I have just discovered that this was NOT TRUE. I plan on following up with this and the store owners/managers. Naurally, there is going to be some place out there where similar products are less expensive, but if you are in a situation like mine, where I have precious little time and immediate need, you couldn't be more satisfied. Floor people Elizabeth and Ashley could not have been more accomodating and time-taking with all of my (and my Mother's) many questions and my hopping from bed to bed to see, and re-see, and then see again, how they all really felt. I ended up buying the top-of-the line set; a Baltic coil mattress and a Legra base (German-made adjustable slat system), *which they arranged to deliver and install in my Santa Cruz Mountains home!* I have no doubt that I will love this bed, and that it truly will change my life. The bed is very good; very comfortable. I have severe spinal arthritis and have tried every other mattress available - sleep number system; tempurpedic; heavenly bed; and so forth. So, we are happy with this "slat system" and the softness that I require in the mattress. The service was good when they were SELLING the bed. But, there is no follow-up service and you have to pay $75.00 to have the bed delivered. We found this to be actually "snooty" when you consider most places pay for the shipping due to the exhorbitant markup price of the bed itself. Of course, they didn't tell us about this charge until we'd made our selection (which was lengthy), put all of our emotional effort into the purchase and then at the paper signing, we got the news. Also, they have an A and B side of the Queen bed (if you so choose) - A is for a soft mattress and B for the firm. I lay on the bed the first night, and it was painful .... that's because the B side (the firm) was mismarked I suppose at the factory .... we figured it out and had to rotate the mattress. It was then that we also realized that the slats were pretty much the same on both sides except for 1". Funny, cuz this doesn't make sense since my husband is 6' and I'm 5'2". I.E., my hips aren't as far down the bed as his hips. We still need to call and get advice on how to set the slats; perhaps I'd have no pain in my hips if this were set correctly. The other thing the owner told us is that the bed was "made just for us", hence, waiting two plus weeks to even get the bed. (We figured this is because they wait until they've sold so many beds in a two week period and then deliver to all.) The bed isn't exactly "made just for you" .....there can be a soft side; firm side; or all soft, all firm. This does in fact require different putting together of the bed but this is all that this company does. It's not as though this is any different than Mary Sue's bed down the street. So, all in all, the bed is pretty darn good to sleep on. I still have pain but so far, it's the best I've had (but I want the slats set correctly.) But, if you are looking for a really good customer service experience, I think it's kind of disappointing so be prepared for these things. A follow-up call from the company would be a good start when one has spent nearly $3,000 for a sleep system. Wouldn't ya say? And, for God's sake, throw in the delivery - pleeeeeze!! (There are no perks of any kind at this place.) Final Verdict: Good bed; so-so customer service. read more

Chip and Jill are fantastic! I bought my adjustable bed seven years ago. Throughout this time they have helped me with my various issues. I have MS and some back issues and trying to get the right mattress has been a challenge. They went above and beyond to help me several years into owning my bed. I decided to treat myself to one of Sleep Design's Oxygen pillows. These pillows are quite pricey so it's important you choose a pillow that is right for you. I thought I knew what was best for me, but apparently I chose the wrong pillow (you can choose firmness and height levels). I took advantage of the comfort exchange and walked out of there with yet the wrong choice, again. When I came back to exchange this pillow a 2nd time, Jill, one of the store's owners, realized I needed some serious pillow fitting. Jill spent probably 1.5 hours with me helping me to find the right pillow for ME. Jill educated me on all things pillow. Some might now think pillows are a big deal, but when you have serious back issues like I do a pillow can make or break you. Here's the icing on the cake: Jill can't resell the pillows I took home. Also, obviously a pillow is a mere fraction of the price of a bed. And yet, Jill wanted to insure I was happy with my purchase. I am incredibly happy. And I am incredibly grateful to Jill for understanding my frustration and my need for proper alignment. I am SO grateful to this woman. She is an angel! Oh, and my new pillow rocks! read more

Chip sent out these sweet young men who replaced the battery, and when that failed to solve the problem, returned the next day with a new controller. Which works. We were expertly guided with our knowledgeable bedperson Stephanie. As a physical therapist I know how important a supportive bed is. We purchased the entire ESD system about three years ago-- mattress, pillows, m&p covers, topper, and flexible slat foundation. We couldn't be happier with our purchase. Besides comfort, there's zero movement transfer and it was also important to us that the materials are all natural, no chemicals or off-gassing. We love our bed! I'm so glad that we found European Sleep Design! My husband was very skeptical about spending 2000+ on a mattress, but he is a believer now. We got the Mediterranean XP with adjustable slats, mattress protector and oxygen pillow and pillow protector. Every single thing has been worth all the $$ and more. I'm 7 months pregnant and sleep better than I have in years. They gave me a free pregnancy wedge when we came in the first time and it has been awesome! We've had our mattress system for about a month and I'm so thankful for it every night! The staff at ESD was amazing. Every time we talked with them I felt like they were knowledgeable, considerate, and never pushy. We got the year of interest free financing and it's been working out great. There was a little math discrepancy but after talking with the staff again, we agreed that the math was a bit off the first time it was calculated. I understood all of the charges and there was strange charges that didn't make sense. I wrote a review on November 3rd that indicated my dissatisfaction with their product. I had neglected to contact them with my complaint but they were nice enough to allow me an opportunity to try a firmer spring set and that really helped me get a good night's sleep. Jill and Chip could not have been nicer to deal with in trying to achieve customer satisfaction. In addition, I failed to mention previously that I bought their wool pillow and I'm very happy with it. Also, I recommend their mattress cover as it keeps the bed cool on hot Summer nights. We were completely impressed by the quality and service at ESD. My wife and I looked a couple standard mattress stores first, and while we found some options that might have worked, I knew from reviews online that I wanted to check ESD last. The sales experience was completely different...no pressure at all; Chip took his time explaining all the different options. We ended up going with the Baltic Interactive (latex over pocket springs). The all latex and micro-coil models were still very comfortable, just felt different. We preferred the mattress over a firm base, rather than the sprung slats, so we only purchased the mattress and the cover. Once delivered, we found that if felt too soft on our cheap flexible Ikea bed slats. We replaced it with solid slats (rather than flexible), and the bed feels perfect! Just a tad firmer than what I remember from the store, which Chip said is to be expected for the first month or so. We're already sleeping better than ever, and are very pleased with our purchase. We spent a few hundred more than we might have on a Sealy, but the comfort and quality is a completely different level. Highly recommended! read more

After about 30 days I ended up with neck and shoulder issues but they worked with me to find out if the problem was with the mattress or the pillow. It turns out the pillow wasn't high enough for me since I'm a side sleeper. We received our ESD bed and matress two days ago and are in love with both. We both already sleep better and wake up relaxed and without all the little aches. Chip at ESD was so helpful, patient and knowledgeable, we never felt rushed and know that we purchcased the correct mattress and oxygen pillow. It can be a bit overwhelming with the various choices of mattresses and pillows, and all feeling similar. Bed arrived a week earlier than expected, which was an issue since we were also replacing our flooring. Their delivery company was very flexible and stored the bed at no charge for a week before delivering it. All around a great experience. read more

I too decided to treat myself by purchasing, what I thought, was the top of the line as far as mattresses were concerned. It was between the individual coil and an Tempurpedic. I chose wrong. I have spent over 7k between mattresses, the motorized bed bottom, two pillows that we cannot use, the mattress topper, covers, the whole ensemble. What a waste! I wake because of shoulder pain, my arms fall asleep, we had to remove the motorized bottom because my husband's back hurt so much and ended up with a Tempurpedic boxspring, go figure. I too am stuck with something I cannot afford to replace. If there is a next time, I will make sure that there is some type of money back guarantee if not satisfied with the product. read more

My wife and I are very happy with our ESD mattress. After a month, I can report that I sleep better, wake up more rested, and look forward to sleeping more than I did on the prior conventional mattress. Unlike Temperpedics, the other mattress we were considering, it stays cool and breathes much better. I really like the way it cradles my body but still stays firm. I really like the sales process too. No hard sell. The salesperson was very patient and acted more like a consultant; asking good questions and responding with thoughtful, and truthful, answers. It ain't the hustle you'll get at the chain stores. Delivery and setup was very good too. Definitely worth the premium price but you'll have to be someone who values quality and service over price alone to appreciate the difference. read more

I purchased a mattress from them over a year ago and it is the most comfortable bed I have ever had. I had back and shoulder pain for two years before getting this mattress. What a difference it makes! Plus I love knowing I can breathe easily without all the off gassing from conventional mattresses. Really this mattress is a must! Plus it doesn't cost more than a regular mattress, unless your buying it from Costco or big-lots! I bought a mattress from Sleeptrain before this mattress and it collapsed within 18 months and they did not stand behind their product! I havent purchased a bed from European Sleep Design yet, but I am impressed with the product after spending over an hour there trying them out. I have major back issues and have ruled out tempurpedic and the mediocre products of simmons, sealy, and the rest. The sales person Jill was very helpful and me and my partner were really conflicted about firm or soft and the varying degrees in between. But the patience and information she provided was definitely a plus. The beds were fantastic and it was really only a matter of finding the sweet spot in comfort, I have no doubt this is a quality product. I will update this post after we buy our bed and report how it ended up. I am very anxious about this purchase as most people are but I need relief and as soon as possible.
