Dishonest, Disillusioned & Disinterested ...
I write this as a precautionary tale to others. I would be wary of giving any business to Europcar, and I certainly will not again.
Originally, I had booked our vehicle via Priceline. Upon arriving at the Europcar counter, I was informed by the agent (who was pushing hard to up-sell me) that I would have to purchase 'Damage' as well as 'Theft' Waiver insurance. This amounted to an extra £17 per day, above and beyond what I had already paid via Priceline. I assured the agent that my Visa card covered this insurance. He claimed it did not, and would not accept it. Grudgingly, because I had already booked the car through Priceline, I signed for the additional charges. Here was my BIG mistake.
Upon arriving home, I contacted Visa ( I am American ) and I was correct, Visa does cover the insurance for Damage & Theft Waiver. I had them send to me proof of coverage, and then I commenced the process of getting these charges rescinded from Europcar. Dishonesty, Obfuscation, Unreturned Calls, Poor Follow-Up, on & on it went with them. Every time I dealt with them, I felt as if I were dealing with a used car dealer and not a professional rental car company.
In the end, finally I prevailed, but it literally took WEEKS after I returned the car and *thought* I had settled the matter once and for all with the returns manager. Not correct.
To rub salt into my already open wound, I had back-to-back rentals & returned a previous the car with a 25mm scratch over the back driver's side wheel well. I had never even seen the scratch until it was pointed out to me by the check in agent ( this was AFTER I had been in the shop talking to the manager ). While I can never prove that this scratch was caused intentionally by Europcar, I have deep suspicion. Weeks after my rental return, my credit card was billed £432 for the damage caused, and I was never notified of the pending charge, nor given an opportunity to refute.
In the end, I had two rentals with Europcar ... one for 78 days & one for 30 ... providing them close to £2000 in business. Never again, Europcar.
