    AVOID at all costs. Scammed us out of $400 when they lied to us and told us that an additional driver costs £20/day when the actual cost per their policies is only £16.66 per day up to a maximum of £166.60. Also double charged us on multiple taxes and fees, and told us to return with a full tank of gas, but the car was only 2/3rds when we received it. BAD BAD BAD. Go to Alamo/Enterprise instead!

It was late and I was at the airport with two children my wife along with all our bags so I was forced to sign. The business tactics are setup to defraud. Picking up went fine; but they subtly rush you through the check out process so that you don't feel the need to take video of every inch of the car before you drive away--BE SURE TO DO THIS! When I returned the car, suddenly they tell me it's damaged and charge me over a thousand dollars for repairs. I fight them on it but they just send me to collections. I sadly realize that getting ripped off by a lower amount is better than getting ripped off by a higher amount and so I negotiate a lesser fee and begrudgingly pay it. But they don't remove the collections notices and so I STILL get them to this day (it's been three months). Oh, and the collections notices are in German, which I don't read. Bottom line: rent from ANYONE else and spend 20 mins to take a full, slow-walk video of the entire inside and outside of the car both when you pick it up AND when you drop it off. Protect yourself from this awful company! I hope this helps somebody.

    AVOID THIS RENTAL COMPANY AT ALL COSTS…read more My experience with Avis was unacceptable and misleading. I booked and paid for a Mercedes A-Class, listed by Avis as a Medium (Group M) vehicle. At no point during booking or in the confirmation was I informed that two credit cards would be required for this reservation. Only when i arrived at the rental desk was I told that two credit cards in my name only were mandatory. This was never disclosed in advance. I attempted to resolve the issue by offering alternative solutions like holding a security deposit on my debit card or my wife also volunteered to provide her credit cards as the second card, however these were flatly refused by the rude guy on the desk. As a result of Avis introducing an undisclosed condition at pickup, I was denied the car I booked and instead given a Vauxhall Corsa, which Avis itself classifies as Small (Group B). This was a clear downgrade from what I paid for. Avis' own terms state that any requirement for two credit cards (for luxury or high-value vehicles) must be confirmed at the time of booking. That did not happen. Changing the rules at the counter and then forcing customers into a lower-class vehicle is unacceptable. This was a textbook example of poor transparency, inflexible staff, and misleading rental practices. I have submitted formal complaints and would strongly advise others to avoid Avis.

    This company is committing outright fraud. What they do is hand you a form to sign with a BLANK…read moredamage record, BEFORE you even see the vehicle. DO NOT SIGN IT until you inspect the car, as they will use that against you when they debit your bank account. Even when you point out the damage, before leaving the lot, the employee will reluctantly document it on the actual paper that the customer keeps. Except they don't keep a record of that on their own file, they only keep a copy of the blank ine that you signed. So naturally when you return the vehicle, you will be charged for all pre-existing damage, and it is up to you to prove otherwise. Then when you complain to your bank, they use the copy you signed before you even saw the car, with zero damage, against you. It gets even worse. The vehicle I initially rented broke down 9 miles out, the clutch was fried. After the car was towed in, the manager blamed me for the clutch. BTW, I have literally owned 4 manual cars, and have been driving a manual car in Italy for 4 weeks now. Then he even attempted to blame me for the pre-existing bumper damage. I pointed out that his employee documented the damage, he says, oh I didn't see that. So, by that statement, he admitted they do not document pre-existing damage. Anyway, it took them 4 hours to get me into a second vehicle, which also had pre-existing bumper damage that was not documented until the exit gate. Surprise, I drop the car off and a month later they wack my card for over 3,200 for pre-existing damage. Took me several months to get the money back, but I did after much pushback, sending multiple photos and documents. First they did a partial refund, then a bit more, then when I did not let up, I got the rest. However, it shoyld not take me hours and months of work, and I am certain most people just give up. So document and get signatures, and do not toss that paper.

As I had travelled extensively in the states for work, I never double checked the rates during the pickup, as I paid what was already quoted. After travelling all night on a plane, we did not bother to look at the small print on the little form that I initialized. Why would we? It should have been as quoted. This is classic bait and switch which I never encountered when travelling in the states. Buyer beware! P.S. They do EVENTUALLY reply via email but just send stock emails and didn't really want to know about the issue. Credit card dispute will not refund the money because basically its covered under Hertz's contract that any issues, you are responsible for them. Basically I was in a spot where it was my word against theirs. I have had great experiences many times, traveling for business with Hertz of the USA but this has left a bad taste in my mouth. I WILL NOT use Hertz UK again.

Even with a UK SIM card it is not possible to call any Alamo number. Luckily I found a number for the Heathrow Airport Location online and they were able to connect me. We were stranded for a total of over 6 hours. It took 4 hours for a recovery truck to arrive. The service had not been told there were three of us so they left the car and called us a taxi. The Taxi arrived several hours later to take us to the village and our hotel. Total time from being disabled until we arrived at our hotel was from about 4PM until after midnight. The next QuikFitday they finally agreed that they would send a taxi to take us to an Enterprise location in a nearby town. It never arrived and our host finally took us just before closing time. Then, I discovered I had left my expensive prescription sunglasses in the car. (It was pitch black when the taxi arrived) Alamo could not find the car. They thought perhaps I had the license number wrong. I read the number to them from a picture of the car. After about a week, I checked with a nearby location of the chain Alamo uses, QuikFit. Not only was the car not there, it was no where in the system. I started calling other QuikFit locations and located the car. It had been dropped off with no paperwork. The manager had no idea whose car it was but he was glad to mail my glasses to our hotel. At last! A hero in this sad crazy tale!

I had booked a BMW i5 for a recent trip and when I arrived at the airport early they were very apologetic because the car they had put aside for me was not charging. They gave me a plug in hybrid one instead but this wasn't suitable for my trip. I had some issues with the car and their central reservations assured me I could go to Heathrow and pick up an i5. However when I arrived they had no cars. The airport director Hassan gave me his card and put me in a brand new Mercedes, comped my fuel and then said he would deliver the i5 to my hotel and said next time I'm in Heathrow to contact him and he'd make sure my experience was top notch. True to his word he got me my car and comped me my fuel and a little bit more for the trouble. Great service, great cars. I will be back!

I also researched other car rental companies, and Sixt prices appear to be about the same overall for upgrading to an automatic transmission(us Americans don't do well with manuals) and for full insurance coverage(American Insurance does not cover foreign rentals). All said and done it was £636/$858 for an Peugeot 2008 SUV with automatic transmission and full insurance coverage. It helped that I made a reservation months in advance. We had a small incident with picking up the car...our flight was an hour early! The 1st Sixt Lady said our car wasn't ready, but we could upgrade for an extra £22/day to pick up a larger SUV, a total of £176/$238! She kept pushing us to upgrade and claimed that the Peugeot 2008 did not have GPS or a center monitor to plug in a iphone with. Very reluctantly and defeated, we agreed as we were exhausted and jetlagged from our 12 hour flight and had no fight left in us. Upon walking to the car lot, we did see a Peugeot 2008 sitting there looking ready. We took a closer look and did see that it did indeed have a center monitor with USB C ports to plug in an iphone. At the pickup office we spoke to the staff, one kind gentleman, a self proclaimed car guy, concurred with me that the Peugeot 2008 did have a USB C port and center monitor to plug in an iphone for GPS, and that the car was ready for rental. I believe his name was Hassan or Anas from my email. He let us test it out, and indeed our iphones were able to connect to connect to the car(fortunately I brought a USC C cable with me!) . Maybe the 1st Sixt Lady at check in did not know her cars? Regardless, we were able to downgrade back to the Peugeot 2008, and get our £176/$238 refunded back to our credit card. It was an annoying 40 minute delay, but it all worked out. Car return was easy as well, just be sure to go to the T5 Sixt Car Rental Return, not the general Car Rental Return center. Almost a 5 star, but I have to mark down due to the snaffu, and I still am annoyed by the $18/day fee to add an additional driver, even for married couples. We skipped that fee, my wife drove the entire time due to that. Will likely rent here again on another UK road trip, despite the annoyances.

The line was out the door and some customers inside were extremely unhappy that the car they had booked several months before was unavailable, while an unfortunate young employee tried to explain why. I was seen by Shazia, a professional member of the team, who advised me that the car I had booked wasn't available but a different one was being prepared. She told me I needed to sign the condition sheet inside the office (i.e. confirming that the car was in perfect condition) but could take photos and videos outside. I returned the car on the specified day, but was shocked to see my account charged £595 without any warning or communication. I endured 5 weeks of fruitless back and forth emails, the first 3 of which involved continuous exchanges in which an extremely unhelpful member of staff, Sam, repeatedly asked what my rental agreement number was (in the email chain following on from my invoice!). I eventually received an email with photos documenting the alleged damage no less than 4 weeks after the charge, which I was able to show through my photos and videos was present on the vehicle when it was provided to me. Only at this point did the company accept responsibility. The above approach shows a system in which customers cannot view the car before signing off on the condition sheet, and so any previous damage or markings are automatically charged for, leaving the customer to continuously chase for answers and with the company taking no responsibility for evidencing the original condition. This is worsened by repeated requests for information already provided (e.g. rental agreement number) and a complaints email address which receives no response/acknowledgement.
