Let me start by saying I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder. 3 weeks ago while in Mexico I pulled a muscle in my left shoulder. The pain was an 8 out of 10. I tried every OTC med there was and nothing helped at all except for ice, which was only barely effective. So I get back in town and see my physician dr korenstein at eureka family practice. I tell him I'm miserable, I can't sleep and my left shoulder is killing me. I tell him I've tried everything OTC. He gives me a med that doesn't help. I ask again and I get generic Alleve after telling him no OTC med works. Doesn't he listen? I ask again for help and I'm told that I need to go to the ER for help. WTF? What kind of patient care is that? I see this loser has 2 other negative reviews here. I used to like EFP but I'm done until they get rid of this douce. read more

My review is only based on seeing Dr. Caroline Conner, which is why I'm giving more than 1 star. At my most vulnerable I've ever been Dr. Conner was the least compassionate doctor I have ever seen. I went to EFP due to a car accident I had (which I was not at fault for). I was on the job during the accident so I had to be treated through Worker's Compensation, and the sent me there. It was serious accident where I t-boned someone going 50mph because they didn't stop at a stop sign. I had sprained my ankle, but had incredible bruising all over. She prescribed physical therapy, which I went to for a number of months. My physical therapist was incredibly helpful, EPT Rehabilitation. There were a few issues I had with her. I had pain and numbness in my right hand and arm. I asked her about it and she acted like it was no big deal. She barely acknowleged it. When I went to EPT and told them about it they said it was due to my right shoulder taking in the most impact, which damaged the nerve bundle in my neck, which connected right through the path of where my pain and numbness stared and ended. Again, I brought it up to Dr. Conner and she did nothing. Luckily the pain has subsided, but often in times of stress it itches really badly. About 6 months into treatment Dr. Conner prescribed another 3 weeks of treatment, but it took well over a month for it to be approved by WC. I had another appointment with her before it was even approved. At that time she learned I had a lawyer. Who wouldn't after an accident like that? She actually came out and accused me of only trying to get money. She said I was fine and I didn't need any more treatment. Even though I was still waiting to see the PT from the last time she prescribed it. I told her about a spot in my back that really hurt. She pushed on it really hard, told me I was fine. My back was in even more pain from her pushing on it for TWO days! It was so frustrating and still is. I still deal with a lot of back pain. I feel if I were to receive appropriate treatment I might not be in as much pain as I am. I didn't care about the money. I was only 25 and wanted my health. To this day I get migraines related to the pain in my upper back and I have sciatica that comes and goes. It's been 7 years. I would strongly advise, if you go to Eureka Family Practice to stay away from Caroline Conner, and see someone else. read more

This BY FAR IS THE WORST OFFICE IVE EVER BEEN TO FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION!!!! DO NOT GO HERE!! I have a medical history for chronic sinus infections. I've had emergency surgery twice on my sinuses due to horrible sinus infections. I get them through out the year. I went to see DR. Kornstein(only been a doctor for LESS than 1 YEAR. completed his residency in 2012 is what it says online!) I couldn't breathe very well when sleeping, had massive migraines, green mucus in my throat and nose, sore throat from coughing up all the mucus. He told me he wouldn't prescribe my antibiotics and sent me on my way!! THEN he proceeded to tell me that ENT, (ear, nose and throat surgeons), surgeons do NOT know what they are doing by prescribing antibiotics to treat a sinus infection and let the patient wait 10 days first!! this guy is NOT a good doctor and has NO idea what the HELL HE IS TALKING ABOUT! The antibiotics always cure my infections. I only went to him because I couldn't get into the ENT office for 3 WEEKS unless there was a cancelation that worked. I ended up going to the Emergency Room (which took hours) and they treated me respectfully! BEWARE OF EUREKA FAMILY PRACTICE!! I went on to file a complaint with the State Medical Board and they'll do their investigation to see if he neglected me as an ill patient . UNBELIEVABLE THE WAY I WAS TREATED WHEN I CLEARLY WAS MISERABLE AND COULDN"T SLEEP FOR OVER 24HOURS because I breathe out of my nose to sleep and I couldn't because I was so congested!! It can't get any worse than this place. If you can help it, go somewhere where you will be treated as a human should be and get the proper care you deserve when your sick. read more

This office provides the worst medical care I have ever had with a medical practitioner in my entire life. Wannabe Physician Robin had not looked at my file prior to my visit, she dismissed several of my previous diagnoses as antiquated and suggested I should stop my medications. I find this to be irresponsible, reckless, and arrogant. She told me that I should suffer in agonizing pain for 6 weeks until I saw a specialist, and when I told her I had a specialist, she got all flustered and said she couldn't work with the interference of other doctors. WHAT? She must have graduated at the top of her fake medical class, because that's the smartest logic I've ever heard. I was subsequently dismissed from the practice via 3 certified letters and explained that my dual insurance of blue cross and partnership does not allow for me to pay cash for uncovered care. Is that so? Does the pharmacy agree? Does Humboldt Neurology agree? How about the hospital? Urgent care? My eye dr.? They all love cash! I thought not, so I called my insurance to ask about that. Eureka Family practice lied to my face. I have worked in medicine and I know the only four reasons to be dismissed from a medical practice--I committed NONE of those. I may have mentioned to the office that I had an attorney, so that might expain it. I believe they are committing insurance fraud, and I will be investigating. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! Especially if you are in any crisis at all be it emotional or physical. They will make you feel like a lying fool and suck your wallet dry for months while "specialists" do all the work. read more

While in Mexico recently I injured my shoulder. It felt like I had a hot spike driven in there. It was miserable. I took every OTC med there is but no help. I get back home and it still hurts really badly. I call eureka family practice and make an appt with my new doctor, Dr korenstein. I've been with EFP since the 80's except for briefly moving out of the area. So I go see him and tell him im miserable. I also say I've tried every OTC med and that I've recently had rotator cuff surgery on the other shoulder and my sleep stinks. He says I probably have a muscle in contact with a nerve causing the pain. He prescribes a med but it does nothing. I call back the next day to ask for something else and he prescribes gen eric Alleve. DOESN'T HE LISTEN? I call back again and im told to go to the ER. Is this EFP'S policy to tell patients to go to the Er when they have legit pain? It's frustrating because ive had 2 awesome Dr's in Rachel bailey and ed olsgaard here. Korenstein needs listen to his patients or find another career. read more

This is my first ever yelp review but I felt like this was important enough to write about. I was previously with St. Joseph Health Medical Group (formally Eureka Family Practice) and I felt very disappointed and under served with them. This review is specifically for the OB branch. This is my first pregnancy and I felt like I was being pushed around and just plain stresses out and ignored. My OB encouraged surgery during my pregnancy and informed me about miscarriage without a blink of an eye and a "if it happens it happens" attitude. After asking if there was an alternative I was hesitantly informed that we could wait longer. I felt pressured to say yes to surgery without having enough information about it. I had to ask (twice) for the name of the type of surgery and the procedure that they wanted to do on me on a piece of paper so that I could do further research on it myself. Whenever I expressed concerns about pain it was dismissed. I had a blood work that went missing multiple times. Scheduling ultrasounds was a nightmare I had to leave work to walk ultrasound requests from the doctors to the imaging center multiple times after weeks of calling both offices. The days of good medical care are no longer here in Humboldt County. Eureka Family Practice (which is now defunct) used to be an excellent medical office. I worked there for a year and a half, and most doctors there were great. Doctors Leer and Olsgard were top notch physicians. There were bad doctors there, like Debbie Vrieze fnp. Caroline Conner was good too. Now that this has flipped to St. Joseph, I would not recommend going there for anything. Anything St. Joseph related is a great big bowl of Suck!! I live in Eureka, and if I have any procedure that needs to get done, I go to UCSF in San Francisco if I have a choice. Getting good physicians here is like pulling teeth. Nobody wants to come here. My Infectious disease doctor would only come here if his wife liked it here! I heard she discovered Bayshore Mall, and loved it, so he moved here. Bottom line, if it's st. joe related, go somewhere else. read more

I have been a patient at Eureka Family Practice for many years. I have an established doctor there but have seen the other providers at various times for miscellaneous things. I have found all the providers at Eureka Family to be compassionate and attentive. I am usually able to see my regular provider when needed but if for some reason he is unavailable, I am still able to be seen by another provider and I have found the staff to be very accommodating. At one point I needed a referral to a specialist. I was told to expect a 7-10 day waiting period for it be done but to my surprise, it was done the next day! I received a call from the referrals department letting me know that the referral had been sent and was given the phone number to contact the specialists' office to schedule my appointment. I can't say enough good about Eureka Family Practice. My family and I have been regular patients for over 20 years and have always received wonderful service from check-in to check-out. My experience is that any and all providers there put the needs of the patient first and foremost and the staff and providers work together to make sure the patients get high quality, compassionate care. Some of the practitioners even have sub-specialties to further accomodate their patients. An associate of mine sees Dr. Connor in her migraine practice and has always found Dr. Connor to be extremely efficient, compassionate and knowledgeable. I would sincerely recommend EFP to anyone looking to establish medical care with an efficient, family oriented, and overall amazing practice. read more

I see some unhappy reviews here and just thought I'd express a bit more optimism. Dr Connor has been super helpful in helping me with chronic migraines, it wasn't a quick fix but she did it without prescribing addictive pain killers. She warned me that getting better was a process not a pill. I've also had good experiences with Dr Holst too. The medical system; short office visits and insurance limitations in general is frustrating and it's no fun being sick and in need of care but I've gotten the treatment I need and am thankful. read more

Now that they have merged with St. Joseph seems like they are more concerned with their jobs than patient care. I scheduled an office visit (and paid for) just to get a referral, well 3 months later, they now inform me the other doctor's office has declined to accept the referral. DECLINED to take my referral ( Dr. Kajdos office). I didn't realize a doctor's office could decline a referral. Silly me, I thought there was some sort of oath doctors took to help people but apparently not in Humboldt County. Well, I certainly hope waiting MONTHS for a referral from Eureka Family Practice and to Dr. Kajdos hasn't affected my health. If it does, I KNOW they won't care! read more

This office has really gone down hill. Not the same, since St.Joseph took over and the move.My doctor's were Leer and Olsgard,in the past.I can't even see Leer anymore. The quality has gone down.Really a shame.I started going to Family 21 years ago. read more

Doctor Kornstein , is one of the most unprofessional doctors i ever went too ! he doesn't listen , i will never go to him again

I went to Eureka Family Practice after having the worst doctor's office ever. I saw Rachel Bailey and she is amazing. She took the time to go over everything and made suggestions that I had never even thought to mention. They were quick to see me, knew what my insurance and copays were, did my blood draw on site (without so much of a squeak out of me!). They even called me within a day to tell me what my results were. I never had to call or pester anyone to get anything. They are all very friendly as well. I'm so glad to have a good doctor! read more

IMoved to the area 3 years ago. Since then I have had difficulty finding a General Practitioner for my husband and I. I went to Eureka Family Practice because a) they are by the main hospital...figured that was a plus & b) they could see me the next day...that should have been a red flag. I've seen Dr. Steven Korenstein 2x and I would like to give fair warning everyone out there that he is a lazy uncaring doctor. The first time I saw him was not an emergency, just wanted to start a relationship with a GP and get the ball rolling on some prolonged issues like arthritis yadayada.... he had an aloof cynacism about him and seemed to not hear me when I was talking, not like the "what did you say" kind of not hearing but the "I don't give a $%^&*" kind of not hearing, but I didn't hold it against him, 1st impression are sometimes off. The 2nd time I saw him, I had tremendous stomach pain and had been vomiting for 5 days. I HATE the emergency room so I just scheduled an appointment with him. The nurses (each time I've been there they great by the way) gave me a nifty vomit bag, and when I saw him he wouldn't go near me, didnt feel any areas on my stomach for localized pain (I've had chronic stomach problems in the past so I'm an old vet when it comes to how docs investigate stomach pain). I told him i've been vomiting 5 days and am having severe pain in the upper right stomach area. He gave me nausea meds said its no biggie it will pass and sent me on my way..I asked him for clarification as to why he thought it was no biggie and this is the whopper..he tells me that I've only been vomiting for a couple days...ummm no I'v been vomiting for 5 not 2, upon which he waived his hand shrugged and said "yea 5" and also said that the pain being in my lower left means no sign of concern ...umm once again wrong. I corrected him and stated once again that it was the opposite, the upper right...I saw him taking notes for goodness sake. To which he once again shrugged and waived his hand and said yea that area means nothing serious to...What the hell is wrong with this moron?! I continued to go to Eureka Family Practice, I filled out a comment card and switched doctors. Since them I've seen Katie Shoenfeild a Practitioner saw her for a Gyno, she's nice and I respect her opinion and trust she is listening to what I have to say as well as using her sound judgement, not a coddler but very informational...love it. Saw a female doctor there a few months ago when I got a pretty bad infection, she was good but she had left the center by the time I needed to go again last month (Damn). So made an appointment with Dr. Edward Olsgard. I got food poisoning the morning of the appointment, called when I was 5 minutes away, 5 minutes before the appoinment (btw had to drive 30 min to get there), let them know I would be on time or couple min late, admin put me on hold to speak with the doctor and said never mind we have to reshedule...I explained myself and agrued that I always have to wait 15-20 minutes in the waiting room before I see a doc anyway, to no avail. She said the doctor only alows 15 minutes for each patient, which still makes no sense to me why I couldn't be seen on time or 3-5 minutes late (explains why they rushed me out each time I've been there aswell). Hope this helps. Keep Yelping and rating on the Internet...we are the people. read more

I agree!!! Dr. Connor is the best!!!!! The prior complaint of patient is unfortunate. The fact remains the doctor addressed your injury, did proper medical exam, took appropriate exams, and referred for treatment. I am not sure what your complaint is. Your injury healed as it should have and you got outstanding medical advise from a great doctor, Dr. Caroline Connor. The compassion you state you did not receive unfortunately comes with time as you develop a relationship with the doctor. Often, workmen compensation relationships and expectations are challenging. read more

(This is not a review of the service.) EFP should have the website picture of the staff retaken. It looks terrible because of the way people are placed, with some obscured. Not a great photograph. Just FYI. read more

I have gone to EFP for several years and am glad that they are trying to stay independent of St. Josephs system. They are one of the few practices left and I hope they can remain. Once St. Josephs buys everyone up then you will see what happens when there is a monopoly. I have had many problems with St. Josephs and none with EFP. Dr. Holtz has always taken the time to explain my treatment and discuss options. I have always felt he and his staff were professional. I also think the only people that write in are disgruntled or had a problem. This is not the norm and I think the doctors there are trying to do a good job. I have never had a problem getting a referral if needed. Good luck finding another doctor in Eureka. Even open door is full. read more

This is the most horrible doctor's office!! The staff is rude and unprofessional! The doctors only care about money. DO NOT GO THERE!!!

I've been a patient at EFP for 16 years. I have steadily watched patient care decline over the last 5 years. My most recent visit has brought an end to our 16 year relationship. On a Friday, I came in with an ear infection, Dr. Kornstein checked me out, sent in a prescription to my confirmed pharmacy. I arrived at the pharmacy at 4:30 to find it did not exist. It was now 4:40 and when I called EFP the the receptionist answered the phone, I could hear laughter and talking and then they hung up. When I called back, the phones had been turned off for the weekend. The outgoing message clearly stated they are open until 5pm. I called Saturday morning only to discover they had called the prescription in to the wrong pharmacy. The Saturday receptionist apologized and fixed the error. She also gave me the name of the office manager, Loraine. I contacted Loraine on Monday to tell her my tale of frustration and prolonged pain because they turned off the phones 20 minutes early. Her response will leave me baffled for years. "Thats the way it is, it has always been done that way". She continued to tell me if they leave the phones on until 5pm, they would be subjected to employee overtime if there were multiple patients in the phone queue. I strongly suggested they change their outgoing message to reflect this. She rebuffed that it used to be they turned the phones off at 4:30pm, but she, herself had extended it to 4:40pm. She suggested I find an alternative provider if I was dissatisfied. I reminded her, most offices are not taking new patients and she confirmed this. After a discussion about how I could get some kind of resolution which included reviews and basically bad mouthing publicly, we eneded our call agreeing to disagree about the lack of quality patient care. Two days later I received a letter stating they will no longer be providing medical care to me. I guess even after 16 years, being a patient with insurance that pays and always paying my co-pay, if you have an opinion about their business, they will simply dismiss you. Thanks Loraine, I guess I should have suffered in silence. You clearly lack empathy and professionalism. read more

I thought I should respond to the only review posted on this site. I have been a patient at Eureka Family Practice for over 30 years. I have had many excellent doctors from the practice, and honestly have never had a bad one. My only experience with Caroline Conner was as my mother's physician before she passed. She was amazing! She was incredibly compassionate and even made a house call because of her poor health. My mother loved her, and she made her last time on this earth more comfortable. My only complaint about the practice is the doctors have come and gone. I have had so many excellent personal physicians and seen them move on, but perhaps that is caused by their success both personally and professionally. I grieve each time I lose a good personal physician, but they seem to bring along one I like as well or even better. I had a great friend who was one of their founding physicians and know he was a very loving and compassionate man, a good family man and a very competent doctor, unfortunately he passed and I miss him. My current doctor is Dr Holst and I honestly could not be more pleased with him. I feel he is all the things I want in a personal physician, competent, caring and friendly. He listens and takes seriously my concerns. The office is clean and they do not keep patients waiting as a rule. I would recommend them to anyone. read more
