1938 Gettysburg Battlefield monument [Gettysburg PA]
The Eternal Light Peace Memorial is located northwest of Gettysburg on Oak Hill. This is our second visit to this monument. Veterans of the Union and Confederate armies from across the nation came together 75 years after the battle for their last great reunion... all of them at least in their nineties, many were over one hundred. The memorial was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the observance of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1938.
"All of them we honor, not asking under which Flag they fought then -- thankful that they stand together under one Flag now."
~ President Franklin D. Roosevelt
The monument is a tall square pillar rising from the center of a stone platform and is topped by a bronze urn for an eternal flame.
During the Battle of Gettysburg, soldiers used trenches, stone walls, and fences as barriers and obstacle. There are trenches as well as Confederate artillery exhibits that can be seen around the memorial. The interpretive signs nearby are educational reads.
