I hate, hate, hate paying too much for gas. I won't drive out of my way for it, but I regularly…read morepass about 10 different stations on my commute. The posted prices are usually within a few cents per liter of each other, but Centex is regularly the cheapest. The level of HAPPY that scoring the cheapest gas along my communte brings me is of epic proportions. Seriously. On Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the price at the pump is 2 cents per liter cheaper than the posted price. They don't just adjust the posted price on these days either - the posted price is STILL lower than other stations. But where the REAL BIG savings come in is if your car, like mine, requires premium (91+ octane). Some of the other big guys (*cough* Esso *cough*) get sneaky and only post their price for regular gas. When you get to the pump, you realize that premium is $0.15+/L more than regular. Ohhhh SNAP. At Centex, premium is always $0.10/L more than regular. Always. So, lets get out our calculators. $0.05+/L more for premium, plus $0.02/L on Wed / Sat / Sun, plus having a regularly posted price a few cents cheaper than other stations.... adds up to at least $0.10 per liter. You might be thinking "10 cents? who cares?". WELL. Stats Canada says that the average Canadian drives 18,000km per year. At average fuel economy, the 10 cents savings will quickly add up to $200 per year! It will be even more if you drive an older car or drive more than average. Moral of my rant: Start filling up at a nearby Centex. Take the $200+ you save and treat yourself to a nice dinner at one of the fine establishments in town. So, recently I was too lazy to fight the crowds at Superstore. It had been a long week, I was…read morelacking in energy and the will to fight, and I only needed a few things. Hence: Co-op. The food selection is fairly limited and priced higher than Superstore. They had limited frozen foods, expensive cereals and a basically non-existent ethnic food section. Do rich white yuppies not eat rice or make hummus or even eat Mexican?! I was a little embarrassed. I can't survive on cereal and pasta alone, people. That being said, their deli, bakery and fresh fruits and veg section is stupendous. All of the fruits and vegetables are fresh and ready to go, and you barely need to examine them to know you're getting good stuff. They have tons of varieties of fresh baked breads, which is so, so fabulous. And the deli and cheese selections are pretty good and diverse considering their size. But co-op makes it's mark once you get to the till. As a member, you automatically get some money off. And then they bag your groceries for you. And then a porter puts them on a cart and wheels it out to your car for you, where he or she puts your groceries into your car! I'm so into the superstore mindset: "got the reusable cloth bags, put the groceries in the bag OMG they're piling up!!!" , and then fighting to put it all into your car that as I watched that kid do it for me I almost kissed him. It was so nice to just do it all peacefully and lazily. If I had kids I'd be coming here a lot more. It's almost worth the prices just for the level of service.

I go to this Co-op for its amazing produce, its meat section, the florist area and the most amazing deli and takeout food area. There is too much food here to mention but I will definitely try. You can get fresh Sushi, pizza, roasted chicken, cabbage rolls, a huge assortment of salads and sandwiches, a great selection of cold beverages and great coffee. Sometimes it will be my first choice in the downtown area for lunch simply because of the huge options of lunch items and how fast it is. The dining areas are so comfortable and so clean. Because Co-op attracts a hip younger crowd the products at Coop reflect this; funky colourful packagings at low prices with cool marketing and tons of international selections. When you buy at any Coop did you know that you can get discounts on gas purchasing at any of the Coop gas locations.

I'm not one to typically review a gas station. This one, however, has saved me on more than one…read moreoccasion when I've left a downtown club at 2am and found myself running on gas reserves. Bottom line: it's downtown, and it's open 'round the clock, so every club-going Calgarian needs to know about this particular station! 4* instead of 5 only because I once stepped in a small puddle of gas here and ruined my favorite pair of dance shoes. Not sure this is the fault of the station, but still...

A service station is tough to review, since we often take them for granted. We show up. We gas…read moreup. We`re gone again. So its hard to rank one over the other. However, there are a few basic points that make me happy that this particular Victoria Esso exists: 1. Location, location, location! I live in suburbia in the SE, so it is very handy to have a gas station at close and easy access on the way home. 2. It has a drive through car wash. 3. It has 3 access/exit points, so the parking lot is rarely a gong show with people trying to come and go. 4. It has a convenience store, which at times comes in handy. All and all, few complaints here with the location and services. My only concern is that there are, at times, homeless people that cause a minor disturbance. Not often, but it has happened on more than one occassion. In my opinion, this happens pretty much anywhere downtown, but it is a consideration with this location over the burbs. No fault of the business, but its definately a part of doing any business in downtown locations.
