I just…read morehappened to be in need of a couple of groceries on Christmas Day, and JC Convenience Store just happened to be one of the only places open downtown Calgary. When I first walked in, I was a little overwhelmed. The store is quite tiny & claustrophobic and it's not as organized as I'd like. Stuff is kinda everywhere, and it's in disarrayed piles on disarrayed shelves. But when I started to look closely, I realized that this store has got EVERYTHING when it comes to convenience food. Everything from a Kit Kat bar, to Indian tea biscuits! Because this store is now owned by an Indian, and because Mirchi, an Indian restaurant, is located right across the street, JC Convenience now carries Indian spices, lentils and groceries! It's the ONLY place downtown that does! Imagine my delight when I realized that I no longer have to take impromptu trips over to the N.E. when I run out of a little of this, or a little of that. I mean, they even had tapioca for God's sake! They are STOCKED. JC Convenience store has got quite an extensive selection of convenience goods and carrying Indian groceries is really the icing on the cake. Try to see past the disorganization and the mess, and you will surely find that needle in the haystack! Happy Shopping!

I was amazed at the different wieners ( 5 kinds of wieners to choose from), buns and condiment options they have. I got the Gouda smoked sausage.They have 3 different kind of buns to choose from. They didn't say what are the differences in those bun. I just got the one that looked the prettiest. In terms of condiments. I added on my hotdog: ketchup, mayo, shredded cheese, melted smoky bacon cheddar cheese, mustard, sauerkraut, relish, onions bits and fried onions bits. Sounds like a lot of stuff, eh! There are other condiments to choose from that I didn't add to my hotdog like mac and cheese, chili and etc. Too bad they ran out of bacon bits and caramelized onion. That would be nice to have. The hotdog was huge. I ate half and was super full. They don't have any tables are chairs inside. It was somewhat awkward for me to stand and eat so I ended up eating it on my way home.

And let's be honest, between Amy's Confectionary and MAC'S, MAC'S wins hands down. But I persuaded myself to give Amy's Confectionary a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. Amy's Confectionary may be smaller, but it's less packed also. They have an extensive assortment of goods (everything from chocolate bars to Lipton's Soup) and the service is great. On a busy weekday, MAC'S is often packed and you have to wait in line. At Amy's Confectionary, the line isn't as long and they've got just about everything you need. Amy's is a great alternative if you're in a rush.

I went in to buy cigarettes (usually cost me $14.20 a packet) and they upped the price by $4.50 to $18.70!!!!!!!!!!! before tax!!! Also, even though they have lotto machine and all the paraphernalia that goes with it, they refuse to let you buy lotto tickets too. WTF. The items may or may not be priced and being a downtown corner shop, you can expect to pay a bit more. I bought a banana (75 cents), mushroom soy sauce ($3) and 500ml coffee creamer ($2.75). They have a small amount of fresh fruit and veg (potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, lemons, ginger), a small coffee station set up with muffins, a stand dedicated to takeaway Asian noodles (just add water!), a freezer with pizzas and other basic and non-nutritious emergency dinner options, and a few fridges filled with sodas, milk, juice, bacon, eggs etc. The shop is fairly clean and while I didn't explore the right hand side of the shop, I'm pretty sure I spied some back up present options like handmade toques if that's what you're after.
