Dr. Espinosa was not NEARLY just any high school Spanish teacher and tutor, but he was my mentor, advisor, and one of the most influential adults in my life. He is the kind of educator who does more than teach a subject. He teaches you how to think, how to lead, and how to understand yourself. His teaching style always pushed me and my friends to go deeper, whether we were learning Spanish or breaking down the meaning behind a book. I still remember when he guided us through a book called YOU OWE YOU, by Eric Thomas, a motivational book teaching us about how everyone has a superpower and how we owe it to ourselves to live in our authenticity. He explained that it only takes one person being authentic to inspire the next person. That lesson has stayed with me ever since. Dr. Espinosa is the reason I learned to trust my voice. He is confident in his words, relatable in his approach, and intentional in the way he pours into young people. There was never a moment when he was not present for me. There was never a moment where Dr. Espinosa didn't have a quote so cold that it would make us want to close the books and go be great. He wrote my recommendation letter that helped me get accepted into Howard University, where I am now a rising sophomore Honors student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine. I can say with full honesty that this would not have been possible without him. Everything he taught me has carried into my leadership journey at Howard. I now serve as Vice President of The Cure Collective, an initiative focused on addressing all forms of health and wellness. I am the Programming Chair for the Men of George Washington Carver Inc., an organization built on manhood, brotherhood, and community service. I am also the Founder and President of the Howard University Calisthenics Club, where I coach students in strength, mobility, and injury‑prevention training. In every one of these roles, I apply the lessons Dr. Espinosa taught me in high school about being the difference, being the outlier, and making an impact by being true to who I am and what I love to do. I can go on forever about Dr. Espinosa's influence, though, I'll end with this. From grades 7th through 12th, he was my advisor for the My Brother's Keeper program launched by President Obama, which focuses on breaking opportunity gaps for young men and boys of color. Through this program, he taught me brotherhood, accountability, and the importance of showing up for others, even when you're not okay yourself. These lessons shaped me into the leader I am today and the man I aspire to be everyday. Dr. Espinosa was my Spanish teacher in high school, and to this day, I can confidently say he shaped not just how I learned a language--but how I showed up as a learner. Mr. Espinosa, (also known as Espi), was a Spanish high school teacher at the Ellenville Central School. As one of his previous students, I could say that Mr. Espinosa genuinely cares about every students success, in both high school and in life.
