BREAKOUT CHESTER: Breakout Chester is a franchise of…read moreBreakout Manchester. That should tell you something immediately. These aren't unique rooms and it even states on the website that certain rooms are replicas of the Manchester location. Upon arriving we were greeted by a girl who is friendly enough but appeared rushed, then ushered by another staff member downstairs who reeled off a briefing that was word for word the exact same text from their website, vaguely outlining requirements that may be asked of us in the room as well as explaining it's storyline. She then prompted twice "shall we get you into the room then?" which made us again feel a little rushed. "The room is called 'Forsaken'" she explains "Your relatives have invited you to their log cabin but when you arrive you discover they aren't there and it appears they're involved in some sort of satanic rituals". This story lasts for all of 1 paragraph, her labored dialogue once again pulled directly from the Breakout website and parroted to us. Very dissapointing as I had already read this when pre-booking. I was hoping for more engagement on their behalf. In summary; sub-mediocre showmanship and minimum Customer Service. I mean they didn't even have a coat hook for us let alone a meat hook (I asked and they told us to take our jackets wth us)! The room itself was the smallest one we've been to so far. Most we've been to are 2 rooms. This was one room and what can only be described as 2 closets attached it. Essentially a wooden box, the furniture was any old tat you could find from charity shops, a bookshelf and a tv in the corner which would later flash up graphics. To be honest nothing kept any theme or tried to replicate the rustic vibe of a real log cabin, and as we progressed through the clues the "satanic artifacts" were laughable. 6 mugs procured from any goth shop and a pentagram scratched into the floor. Rubbish. Can't really comment on the lighting as it was dark and rightfully so. Sound effects were passable, every so often the tv would flash on with some static or the occasional chanting of devilish mumbo-jumbo. At this point I'd like to point out we didn't actually complete this room, failing at the final clue. However this was nothing to do with our expectations or enjoyment factor. The previous week we did the Red Planet room in Telfords Xscape which we also lost. It hurt our pride a bit but we'd even go as far as to say it was still the 2nd best room we've done. The puzzles were a large part of what let Breakout Chester down. By nature there is a lot of padlocks and boxes, as it's a good way of stopping someone getting in to something. But this was ridiculous. Virtually every single clue was to find a number, which opens a spin lock, which houses a key, which opens a padlock. It got old fast. This lead to fatigue and lack of concentration and eventually you effectively stop caring "what comes next" because you already know. Another lock. They also only give you "lifelines" when they feel like it. Every other Escape we've been to give you a limited number which you can call out for at your own choosing. Fear factor wasn't present. It made the brain work a bit, but ultimately it was unsatisfactory across the board. I would not go again and would discourage anyone going to Breakout Chester and suggest they try another company, because as we've proven at Gross Angeles there are a lot of them, all over the world, all over place in almost every city. Staff Showmanship & Story: 3/10 Room and Props: 4/10 Clues and Puzzles: 4/10 Fear Factor: 2/10 Value for Money: 4/10 TOTAL: 17/50

A good puzzle :) The escape rooms has 4 rooms to escape from, and they were just the right level of…read morecomplexity, we did need the occasional hint but it really was just a hint. Our group did room 13 and took us just under an hour, apparently that is quite good with around a 10% success rate. All of our group had fun and were mentally challenged throughout the tasks set before us, glad we did not attempt this after we had been drinking. We had booked all 4 rooms and then we split up into our four groups, again this is a great activity for a large group or small as you could do all four rooms at different times if you wanted. The staff were great at setting the scene and also were polite and easy to get along with throughout, there is also a bar on site so once finished you can congratulate each other or commiserate over a drink. We loved this and I suspect i will be back in the future.

We took on a 4* room (the name of which escapes me) themed on escaping a murderers lair before he returned to, well, murder us! The room was suitably creepy, with imitation knives, axes and body parts scattered around the room. The only problem was that the most challenging part of the room was that it was very dimly lit. We escaped with nearly 12 minutes to spare, but I feel like if the lights had been on, we'd have escaped much sooner as there weren't that many puzzles to complete, and they were relatively easy once we were able to see them. I would like to come back and try a different room though as it was fun, just a bit easy. Nice bar and waiting area which is a big plus, although you can't take drinks into the room with you.
