I am so pumped that the escape room trend has made its way to Ottawa. This is a great group activity for team building, or a different take on a night out with friends. When I first checked this place out at a previous elite event, I have to confess it wasn't entirely my cup of tea. I was a bit freaked out and had no idea what we were supposed to be doing, but after my second experience I am a total convert. (Maybe don't start off with The Asylum as your first experience...ha!). For those who haven't been to an escape room before, the idea is that you and a group of friends are told a story (often creepy), about the room you are about to enter, and you have a certain amount of time to find the key that unlocks the door. You need to use clues, puzzles and logic to find your way out, and it's especially challenging when you may not know your group very well (or, if you have a lot of vocal leaders!). So far I have tried to Asylum and The Wine Cellar, and preferred the Wine Cellar. I won't give you any more information for fear of ruining the experience! They do have other rooms as well (Prison Break and The Darkness), as well as a larger room that takes up the basement and is for larger groups. One thing that I love about this place is the decor in the front room. The owners have gone to great lengths to find super creepy, antique-looking furniture and neat accessories that make this an enjoyable place to hang out before or after your escape. They have boardgames and a bar as well.

We didn't escape but we WILL RETURN!!!! Hahaha!!! It truly is a FANTASTIC experience! You have 45 minutes in the room. They have a timer on the outside of the room (for the staff) and a timer on the inside. However, They failed to tell us it was the timer and we stopped it with out knowing when we were looking for clues. SOOOOOO just be aware and don't stop the timer LOL... Staff: They are very nice and friendly. Atmosphere: We did the wine cellar. The room was a lot smaller than I expected and there really wasn't anything scary. However, the puzzles and the clues keep your mind turning. It was so much fun. We did not escape but we were SOOOOOO close. Next time I know that you really need to look EVERYWHERE. You cannot leave any stone unturned. IF someone says they checked it, well make sure because sometimes 2 minds are better than one. Which is why this is a group effort. Enjoyment: It was so much fun. We didn't escape yet we managed to still have a blast. We talked about it for hours afterwards trying to figure it all out and trying to see where we went wrong. What we could do better for next time. I CANNOT WAIT to go again!!!!!... :) Bar: Sadly the beer was super warm :( ... I like my beer ice cold and this one wasn't. But its ok, I should have said something and just left it at that. I drank my warm beer and enjoyed some puzzles while we waited for the room. BIG TIP!!!!! IT is really hard to book through their website. The date I wanted said it was closed. However, I sent them an email to verify and they happened to have an open room for us. So if you see everything booked online just email them and see if you can get in. Chris was the person I dealt with through email and he was fantastic, very friendly! We will be going back for sure!!!...

We did both rooms available at this locations on two separate occasions…read more Summary: "Disenchanted Forest" 4 out of 5 stars. "Eh-scape to Canada" 2 out of 5 stars Ehscape to Canada (2 stars) Nothing special about the design or puzzles compared to the "Disenchanted Forest". We were very disappointed with this room. The room was bright and not claustrophobic, but otherwise was just a room. We disliked the fact that the team was split into two and separated. After having completed all the puzzles in the room, I can see no reason why the whole team couldn't just start in the waiting area, and break into the office to escape. We didn't like the artificial constraint on communication; I don't think that added to the room atmosphere at all. (We put up with it, though, and had solved most of the puzzles despite the forced separation/limitation on communication.) I especially disliked having a hint forced upon us at a seemingly-arbitrary time limit of 15 minutes (ESPECIALLY as this is a ZERO HINT room), the first we've seen in 30-some escape rooms we've done. There didn't seem to be any good reason for a 15-minute time limit to reunite the team. You might as well just make this room a 15 min room if you're going to do that. I don't think having 30 min as a joint team was necessary (unless the person(s) stuck in the office is (are) bored out of their tree!). All of the trivia-related questions and most of the locks were opened (and subsequent puzzles solved) by 15 minutes. A few minutes more and we would have had the door opened. I especially disliked the game hosts coming into the room (without us asking them to), saying that we're not getting the door lock puzzle (when we had actually spent less than a minute or two looking at it - a red herring distracted us) and actually solving it for us!!!!!! I don't like being given the answers. I found that that action completely ruined the room experience! It was extremely annoying because there would have been 30 minutes left to escape at that point; with most of the other puzzles solved that would have still given us plenty of time to escape. (No way to tell if is was 30 minutes left or not as there is no timer in the room.) There was also a major malfunction, which took the hosts many minutes to fix or work around, after taking several minutes to arrive at the room itself. I'm not sure if you're still doing the post-game room as it was not mentioned. In summary, I'm not sure it was worth spending $25/person on this room. Disenchanted Forest. (4 stars) We did this escape room about 3 days after our stay-cation run of 15 escape rooms in 10 days. We had originally planned on doing the "Disenchanted Forest" during our stay-cation week because it sounded intriguing from its description, but didn't have requisite minimum number of participants. We managed to convince 2 other people to go with us (thank you!) on a Thursday evening a few days after vacation ended. Now after having seen the room, I understand why they have a minimum number... you need that many for at least one of the puzzles. The room was spacious. The set decor was beautiful & awe-inspiring, about the same high quality as "The Tomb" room we did in July. The attention to detail was amazing! (I especially loved the texture of the tree & the fairy lights in/on it!) The lighting was sufficient, but a bit dim initially... I accidentally stepped on a pine cone twice! (Sorry!) As more puzzles were solved, the room got brighter. Only one dark place/tight spot in the room made me a bit nervous (even though I didn't have to go through it). (Thank goodness for team mates!) I think this escape room would be suitable for families with children as young as 7 or 8, as no language/reading skills are needed for some puzzles, and there's plenty of hands-on stuff to keep them entertained! However, I would recommend that an adult accompany any child going into the dark/tight location. The puzzle quality was good, although some were less than intuitive. We did need to ask for hints, but we managed to light up the tree and complete the quest with 4 minutes to spare. Although we can't remember how & where we found one of the necessary puzzle pieces! The post-game room, snacks, tea/coffee was a nice touch!

We hung out at Tooth and Nail around the corner before we did our room (The Recruit). The room was well set up, with three different areas to work through, and hints were available if needed. There was only two of us, which made the number of tasks more difficult, but we still had fun. If I had other feedback to give, it's that there was too much "acting" at the beginning--I would rather not be called on to play a role in an escape room. I would also add there are many stairs up to this location. I was surprised how many places in Ottawa are inaccessible to many because of stairs.
