Good thing we got there early; gave me a chance to warm up to the idea. And we had a great turnout! Before starting, we had training and then a demonstration. You don't even need special equipment or skill. Think "Wii", but live instead of on TV. Ok you can develop the skill, because let me tell you: this is harder than it looks! I tried about a dozen times, and only hit the target once! What a proud moment! Some people are already really good (way to go, Fauve!) I never thought of the Lumberjack look, but a couple of people did ;-) When we entered, I wondered why you could smell lumber. They must go through a lot of wood here! They have to reset the targets for every time they have an event. You should see how chipped the targets got. The room looks like it may have been originally built as a garage - it's a wide open space with not a whole lot of seating. There were 3 bays set up - 2 with targets and the centre one with stools and a couple of counters that ran along the chain link fences that divided the bays. We were safe enough. I would go again.

This place should be on every woodworking fan's must-see list! I've done my fair share of projects containing wood, doing the tours through hardware stores and wood supply shops like "The Woodsource" (that's also a good, reliable place to shop for wood). KJP Crafts is a great big warehouse that initially reminded me of the location for the Axe Throwing event we attended (it sort of looks like a garage) - enhanced by the smell of wood. This visit was to their Select Hardwoods store. It smells divine in here! We entered through the rear of the shop, not knowing that there was a front entrance. We were greeted by rows and rows of beautiful, straight, even, lumber stacked up and spread out all over the floor, and more leaning along the walls. It's a good thing there were walkways left open for access between these piles! We were looking for a pleasing chunk of wood to use as a mantel piece, and these 2X4s etc. were nice, but not what we were looking for. Suddenly, we ended up in the 2nd room - the part that would have greeted us if we had entered via the front door (d'uh!) I was gob-smacked! There were great big burls of maple that were virtually ready to use as a table; just add legs. There was one burl in a corner that could have been the support for a table - although it would be a pity to hide it under anything! It struck me that this wasn't just another source for wood; it is actually a source for art wood! There were beautiful big pieces priced in the $3,000 - $4,000 range, along with smaller pieces under $500. There were shelves full of slices of trees ready to be turned into bowls. We ended up with a beautiful thick piece of walnut that was part of a slice of the tree trunk. We are cutting off as little as possible, sanding it, and sealing it, getting ready to hang this piece of art on the wall. Just can't wait! Mother nature is awesome! Dow's Lake is a man-made lake on the Rideau Canal. It's the site of many fun activities and there…read moreare several restaurants there with beautiful views of the water. You can rent canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats/paddle boats in the summer. In May there's the Tulip Festival which is technically in Commissioner's Park, but this park surrounds Dow's Lake. In the winter when the lake freezes over, you can skate on it, and it's connected to the Rideau Canal, so you can skate for a pretty good distance. There are 3 restaurants at Dow's Lake. Over the years they have changed, but currently the restaurants are Lago, Umbrella Bar, and Mexi's (aka Mexicali Rosa's). There's a paid parking lot nearby ($3.50 per 30 minutes up to a maximum of $14), or street parking ($0.25 per 6 minutes) a bit further away, or free parking on residential streets in neighbouring Little Italy (3 hour limit as per by-laws).

Sadly, Amex doesn't seem to be as widely accepted as it used to be. There are lockers where you can store your belongings when you are on the water. I recommend coming with what you truly need. I parked in the lot across from the Pavilion. Parking is $3.50 for 30 minutes, to a maximum of $14. I paid by credit card, which was great. I didn't risk parking on the street, but I know that I can now. It's cheaper that way, but you do have to be cognizant of the time. You can also dine here after a fun time out on the water. We ate at Mexi's. You have the option of dining in the restaurant or sitting out on the patio. I missed the tulip festival. Perhaps I'll plan my vacation and take them in next time. (254)

Nadege and Soul are funny and professional. The pace of the classes were pretty good for total beginners like us. Scheduling classes were very easy. The classroom was bright and clean. A bunch of wooden chairs were set up facing the stage, and Perez gossiped about celebrities for an hour or so, told us how he got to be a famous blogger, answered some questions, signed t-shirts, and dropped as many F-bombs as he possibly could. The bouncers were a little too serious for the nature of the event and the guest of honour. You'd think that they'd lighten up a little considering it was Perez Hilton talking and not a concert or anything, but at least they made sure to keep everything safe and fight-free. Food and alcohol are offered at the Observatory. They are fully licensed and offer Starbucks coffee and a decent selection of sandwiches, salads, pizza, pub-fare, and breakfast, all for affordable prices. For those of you that are Algonquin College students, you can use your meal plan here. They also have couches, TVs, and pool tables if you want to hang out and/or study. It's also available for private rentals when it's not being used for other events.
