It's a filipino grocery store but it's also a catering service and they sell take away food. It's what I call "hiding in plain sight". The owner of the only other filipino store in Amsterdam referred me here. It's much closer to where I live. I love it. Why? Do you say? Well, because the owner, Gina, will cook any filipino dish you desire in the quantities you desire to take home. You can call in and preorder, go in and visit and order or buy whatever she's already got cooked. She's very friendly. As a matter of fact I'm hoping she'll adopt me and expect me for dinner regularly. Ok maybe not. So here's the deal. She told me they'd just catered a 150 person private party of which of course all the attendees were all avid filipino food lovers, filipinos, expats, internationals and dutchies. She'll cook for one or many. So I'm going to arrange a dinner for our local Yelpies. I am not going to do this often because I don't want you all to get spoiled and wear out my new source LOL. The owner does it because she loves cooking. She doesn't want the drudgery of operating and running a restaurant. How much does it cost? It's not expensive well depending on how much you want to eat.... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pinoy-Tayo-Store/436474289725247

Either way, one day while clothes shopping on Haarlemmerstraat, I spotted Pastal de Nata shining and maybe smiling at me from across the street. Carefully looking both ways for bikes, I crossed Haarlemmerstraat and entered Casa Bocage. "Hi there, can I help you with anything?" asks the friendly shopwoman. "Yeah, I kind of need these natas in my mouth!" I said semi-slobberly. "I can help with that. Did you want regular, coffee, orange or chocolate natas?" At that point, I think there was so much slobber in my mouth I could barely manage to tell her to stuff all flavors in a bag so I can consume like it was my last meal on earth. But wait, there's more!! There are savory snacks here too!! I'm not too familiar with Portuguese food but they some looked like balls filled with different meats and of course fried shredded bakkeljauw... oh my porto - sooooo delish!!! This place also sells wines, most of them I've never seen before, lots of vino verde, if you've never had it, freshly baked goods and other Portuguese market goods. Either way, the taste of the natas and savory snacks will send this food whore back for some porto action!!! Oh.... and I didn't take pictures because they were in my mouth quicker than I could draw my phone out of my pocket. Soooooooollyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I am drinking one now 'Athayde' from the Alentejano region of Eastern Portugal which I purchased from him this week. It is a complex mixture of regional grape types including a base of syrah/shiraz; very very good. At 25E it is not inexpensive but when you taste the quality you can make it last over a couple of nights just for the experience of something totally unlike French wines or Spanish wines. Casa Bocage also stocks a whole lot of typical Portuguese delicacies which only Ruben could describe. A tiny shop but a good I visit whenever I come to Amsterdam where the Haarlemerstraat is not too hard to find from Central Station.
