People were dressed up in period costumes and showed us around the McLoughlin House - it was neat to learn the history, though it could have been made more engaging, particularly for younger people. The house is very dark and it's hard to see - it will be nice to return after the renovation to see it in a better state. The Barclay House is half office, with the other rooms set up as a gift shop and multi-purpose room. Also, the McLoughlin's are buried on the grounds, so that was interesting.

Super cool historical site in Oregon City…read more There was a great and informative guide and games to play in the living room. We learned about the family who used to live there and then my husband was allowed to play the piano and found some sheet music for two songs all about Oregon. He played the songs and we did our best to sing along. Later the guide told us that the women who used to live in the house, loved music, played the piano herself and often hosted musical evenings in that very same living room. How beautiful is that!

I always know that I'm in for a great time. They are not just supportive of us folks who have mobility challenges with some of the better ADA seating but they also support Arts for All. Many places make it a challenge to get tickets even though they support it. That can be very difficult since ADA seats are many times the first taken. I could really go on and on about how amazing their customer service is too. But they treat me just as well as I'm on a fixed income versus when I was easily able to be a season ticket holder for quite a few years. I also, really appreciate that they have easily accessible restrooms for all of us that are clean with ample stalls. Be certain when attending that you have extra time to explore because they always have interesting art exhibits. They also have a pretty great bar with loads of snacks and a nice selection of beverages and wine that are all very reasonably priced.

Our seats were great, and it seemed like all the seats had a nice view of the stage! Bar staff was very polite and quick to serve, nice selection of both alcohol drinks and nonalcoholic beverages. The ladies bathroom was large and the line moved quickly. There was a nonbinary/family restroom off to the side and I didn't see it, but I think the men's room was nearby. Outside parking on the street or a cozy parking garage across from one of our local breweries next door- easy in and easy out. I will be coming back soon!

The house is a time capsule it's a little eerie, it's staged as if they went on Holiday and never returned. From the authentic period clothing on mannequins that can also be found in photos, to their Knick-knacks and memorabilia. It's like stepping back to the early 1900's. The house isn't Pittock Mansion Status, but it shows the working family farm life and the docets are very informative and point out little tidbits of history to watch for as you wander the property on a self guided tour. Total time in the house was about 30minutes and another 15 exploring the gardens and farm area. Pretty good activity on a cloudy day we took 2 teens and they found everything interesting. 4 stars because the building is in dire need of repairs.

We visited the house for the Winterville holiday festival. Based on the website, it seems like 2016…read morewas the first year this took place, so it's a new event. Essentially, the event is only for two weekends in December. The house was decorated for the holidays a la Pittock Mansion. In one of the rooms they had amateur string players playing holiday music, and there were a few docents around the house providing historic information on the home. The house itself was decorated with Christmas lights, and they also had a sort of Christmas light garden out front. Outdoors next to the house they had a cute wooden sleigh with a decent Santa. Pictures with Santa (with your personal camera or phone) were included in the admission price. Next to that was a tent with concessions and live holiday music. They had alcoholic beverages for purchase as well as hot chocolate and non alcoholic cider for the kids. While we were there we heard choral music from what looked to be a high school choir. There was a vendor fair as well, but, frankly, it was terrible. Not sure if they normally have more vendors and no one showed up due to concerns over road conditions, but there were like three booths, and the tent was mostly empty. Parking was at the business center across the street, and there were volunteers to safely walk you across the road. Overall, this was a cute little event. The price was a little high for a winter event, in my opinion, but it was pretty reasonable considering the fact that it also included the tour of the historic home as well as all of the Christmas displays.

The Lovejoy Columns are an interesting little piece of Portland's history. There are many articles…read moreavailable if you want to read the full story of the columns. Once upon a time the Lovejoy Columns supported the Lovejoy Ramp which was a viaduct connecting NW 14th Ave and Lovejoy Street to the Broadway Bridge. This viaduct ran above railroad freight tracks in the area that is now known as the Pearl District. From 1948-1952 a Greek immigrant, who worked as a night watchman for the railroad, drew wonderful pictures on the columns in chalk and later painted them. When the viaduct was demolished in 1999 to make way for all the condos and businesses that make up the Pearl District, several of the original columns were saved and stored beneath the Fremont Bridge. Two of those original columns have been restored and relocated here. The columns are beautiful to behold and definitely worth visiting.

Early in the last century, he was a railroad watchman who happened to be a talented, proto-graffiti artist. He went by the name Tom to his friends and painted the Broadway Bridge Lovejoy overpass columns with fanciful images of mythical gods and wild animals. Several endured over the years though most are in some abandoned lot awaiting funding for restoration. Two of them have been refurbished and placed in a courtyard on NW 10th Avenue near Everett. In order to access the building, you must befriend one of the artist tenants and/or come during one of the open studio events. This is a working studio complex. But, once you get an invite, you won't be sorry. There is everything from leatherwork, watercolor, photography, encaustic painting & more. Walking through each door to a studio is to explore into the minds eye and artistic expression of another human being. A feast. There are Troy Laundry buildings in Portland and Seattle although my superficial browse of the interwebs didn't come up with a lot of historical info. Do take some time in the staircase at the 11th street entrance, there are some amazing historical photos of the workers and building from back in its heyday as a commercial building.

It is decorated with lots of information about the buildings history and is very interesting. While it was built for one bank it is now home to branches of two different banks so it seems it still lives up to its name. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996,
