In cookery, there are tomatoes and then there are Tomato Stall tomatoes. This is recently become…read moreone of my favourite stalls at Borough Market Stocking only tomatoes grown all year round in their own farm on the Isle of Wight, they pick their fruit at the peak level of ripeness, delivering a guaranteed level of sweetness which you can't guarantee in supermarket fruit They grow about 40 varieties commercially and their stall is a riot of different colours and sizes They also have a most impressive lineup of processed products. They oak roast their tomatoes with different herbs but I love their tomato chilli jam the best, which matches so sweet tomato flavour with a satisfying late hit of chilli. They also carry tomato relish, passata, tomato juice and tomato chutney Don't worry if you can't make it to Borough Market or the Isle of Wight - check their website for a wide range of stockists

Best greengrocer in London? I am not really well placed to judge but Tony Booth's outlet has the…read moremost amazing array of produce I have ever seen. The fact that I will (semi) willingly trek across from Highbury to shop here says it all. The hoard of mushrooms of all varieties that greets customers at the front of the shop makes me immediately think about wild mushroom risottos and tarts (irrespective of the reason I am here). They are displayed with justifiable pride - this is the only place where I know ceps and morels (and all their mushroom friends) are guaranteed to be available to buy when in season. It is not just about the mushrooms though - all the other vegetable and fruit goodies you would expect from a greengrocer are here as well as a few things that one wouldn't (I spied some preserved lemons here yesterday). Put this together with staff who are friendly and knowledgeable and you have a winner - fantastic!
Booth's used to be at Borough Market. It was a Borough Market institution…read more But with the diaspora of market vendors either kicked out of Borough for selling elsewhere or tired of paying for the ever-increasing Borough rent, Booths moved on over to the new Maltby Street Market. This works for me. Because now I can find my fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables for the week along with select pantry items amongst other locals who are perusing the goods because they actually want to buy them and cook them rather than gawk at them with their enormous DSLRs (and just generally get in my way). Booths is always buzzing with activity on Saturday mornings, and you will undoubtedly see one or two restaurant vans outside picking up their produce, a testament to Booth's quality and to the fact that the model of picking up and moving to a truly local market works. Who needs Borough when there's Maltby Street?

Appalling customer service. I was told that my box of frozen fruit will be delivered before midday…read moreso took the morning off work. At 11.30am there was still no sign of my delivery so called the company to double check that it will still be with me before 12, to which they said yes definitely. Midday comes and still no sign of my package so left for work having wasted my whole morning. Half an hour later I receive a call from the company saying that the driver is there and needs someone to take in the package (which may I add needs to be put straight into the freezer). I explained that I had already left for work and that it is their fault as they should have ensured the package was delivered before 12. I told them that we will have to reschedule for another time as there is no way I will be able to make it back. The rep then says to me that it is not possible to take it back to the warehouse and asked if they could leave it with a neighbour (who has to keep it in their freezer). I gave her strict orders NOT to leave it with a neighbour and she said she will think about what to do and call me back. An hour later she calls me back saying they left it with a neighbour?! She then had the cheek to ask if I had the neighbour's number so she could call them and tell them to keep it in the freezer! Unbelievable, and what was worse is that I have yet to receive a single apology for wasting my morning and for going against my instructions. Avoid

A little sign proclaims that this confectionery was invented for an emperor several millennia ago. It's fascinating to watch as the chef starts with a piece of maltose sugar, which is elastic and this is formed into a ring shaped and with repeated dipping into toasted flour to keep the strands separate, is repeatedly stretched and twisted with each repetition tripling the number of strands. The final resulting collection of fine strands is then divided into small bunches which are put around crushed peanuts. Eaten immediately, these are soft and quite moreish. The chef says that these can be kept in the fridge but they will turn hard. It's entertainment as much as food which draws the crowds. Fun to watch but prices are a bit steep at £3 for one box and £10 for 4 boxes.
