When I showed him the photos that were taken when I saw a different doctor and they treated me he didn't believe me. He told me no doctor would have done to my toe with the Dr did. And I had the photos to prove it. His front desk staff is a mess. And ridiculous questions on the forms about do I identify as male, female, queer, etc.... Never in my 40+ yrs of going to drs have I had such difficulty dealing with a practice. - [ ] Almost 9 mths ago I put down a rather hefty deposit for an item and cleared the form given to me with my health insurance and relayed it to the practice to assure them payment. After clearing numerous hurdles w my insurance and intervening numerous times w the practice's billing who almost never answered the phone (called me back), my health insurance issued a check paid in full 3 months later. However, in checking w the Dr's billing I was told the check could not be found. I got the check # and the address where it was sent. I called at least 5 times and was told because the check was sent to corporate it could not be found. How is that even possible!. Isn't corporate part of the organization and dealing with the same accounts receivable? How is it that accounts receivable cannot locate a check?! Finally, after numerous calls 4 months later (meantime 3 months later the office called to say my item is ready) the office called to say that the check had been found (OMG really?!) and the office manager wanted to confirm almost 8 months later whether my credit card # is the same. I called to confirm and made an appt to pick up my product and spoke w someone in the office at the beginning of last month. But when my deposit was not reimbursed I cancelled appt. When I called the office again, they said there is no note in the file showing that I had called and everything was repeated. Again no deposit. I cancelled the 2nd appt. When no deposit I called a third time. This time I was told they were waiting for my health insurance to pay and plus no record of me calling and confirming credit card (no note in my file about either development). Frustrated to no end, I asked to speak w the manager. After reexplaining everything again, she told me that she had never gotten my credit card confirm messages!!! She also said that my insurance check almost a month later is being processed by third party. All managers know this but the office personnel are not privy to it. Why not?! And of course no note was made to the file of my 3 calls to confirm credit card #. Why did they call and ask then if they weren't even gonna follow up. Finally last week my credit card was reimbursed and I called the office 4x to make appt to pickup my product and no reply. So frustrating. I made appt online and about 9 mths later, I go my product. I am done. Never going back. I find this practice really difficult to deal w and internally there is a severe disconnect between depts and severely lacking in coordination and a disservice to patients when notes are not recorded in files and followed up w action. read more

Mr. Masternick needs to stick to corns ,calluses and ingrown toenails. DO NOT let him preform bunion surgery on you! Someone just recently told me that medicine is a practice and they are "practicing" on YOU!Do yourself a huge favor and get a second opinion about the surgery from a foot and ankle Orthopaedic doctor or multiple orthopedics not a podiatrist. Under the recommendation of Mr Masternick, I had Lapidus bunion surgery because he said the cuneiform bone was at an angle and that's the only type of surgery that would work. (Years later and after a lot of research, I learned that most people have an angle on this bone and there are over 100 different types of bunion surgery.) He told me that the downside to the surgery was that I may experience some arthritis pain. He didn't tell me anything else as far as what to expect long term. I trusted him to know what he was doing and how to do expertly preform this procedure. I should not have been so trusting! Following the surgery, when the bandages were removed, I noticed immediately that my big toe looked a lot shorter! Later I learned that the first metatarsal bone and cuneiform bone are both considerably shorter and the big toe has been pulled into the body of the foot. My big toe is comically short and is even more embarrassing then the bunion was! Having this surgery has caused me way more physical pain then my bunion ever did! I recall that days after surgery I asked for something stronger for the pain and he compared me with another one of his patients that just had the same surgery and HIS pain level and that he didn't require extra pain meds. He made me feel like MY pain didn't matter and somehow I wasn't strong enough! What an awful way to treat your patient! He later told me that the amount of dissection he had to do in my foot was a lot! My foot only had a bunion, what do you mean a lot of dissection? Now I know, he took too much bone away and for years I thought this pain must be arthritis or pain from the hardware. (Note about the hardware, I had Masternick remove the hardware last year thinking this was the source of my pain, it wasn't. I also still have a screw that is buried in the bone and pokes out the bottom part of my metatarsal into my arch..OUCH...that was Masternick not paying special attention to detail. They can't get that one out unless they break the bone. WTF! So I elected not to have that done and live with that stinging pain for now). Following the hardware removal surgery and another year of heightened pain, I recently discovered that I don't have arthritis after getting a 2nd and 3rd and soon to be 4th opinions. A few years following the initial surgery and after buying hundreds of dollars of metatarsal pads, toe spacers, orthotics, inserts, tape,etc. and in being in denial of choosing the wrong doctor, I am unable to roll or push off of my foot properly and cannot run much less walk very far. My big toe joint has become inflamed because I put so much pressure on the first over-shortened metatarsal head. It is so extremely painful that I have to tape the big toe into a plantar position and buddy tape it to the second toe everyday to try to stop it from bending. My second toe has been acting as my big toe and causing pain called capsulitis or Morton's Toe. (I didn't have that prior to this surgery and had more then enough bone to make the surgery successful without so much removal). Over the years, Sesamoiditis has become a huge problem and just recently, I thought I had fractured one. Due to unnecessarily cutting the ligament that holds the big toe to the rest of the foot with the Lapidus procedure, my medial sesamoid ligaments have been damaged causing it to dislocate from time to time. This dislocation of the sesamoid causes so much pain that I recently had someone take me to the emergency room and have been off work for weeks because I could not put any weight on the the foot! Now I have the rest of my life to live and I'm only 44, with a right foot that has been so severely altered, that I cannot take a step without thinking "how am I going to put this foot down", the pain keeps me up at night and wakes me in the morning, and I have been living on Tylenol and Advil for the past few years! Needless to say, Mr Masternick, I'll always remember you! Also...According to the recent multiple MRIs, I don't have plantar fasciitis like you tried to label this pain under. Lastly, The physical therapist treatment that Masternick just recently recommended before I went for a second and third doctors opinion.... one of the therapist said she has never seen this before and asked me "Did he mean to do that"? I just broke down and cried right there in the office. Very depressing knowing there is nothing that can be a "fix" for my problem. People...Find a true foot and ankle orthopedic for your bunion surgery...not a podiatrist foot doctor... better yet, Don't Have Bunion Surgery! read more

I don't recommend Dr. Erik Masternick for bunion surgeries. I had an unpleasant experience and have been having pain and discomfort for a year and three months now. I got multiple other opinions from other surgeons who have told me that I have to redo the surgery because my bones were fused together more elevated than they should have been. I must redo the surgery to fix the error. Also, he uses an older method that produces larger scaring. read more

I am able to get an appointment when I need it (not two weeks to two months out like with some doctors). He carefully listens to my concerns and offers me a range of care options. He did an awful job closing the incision area , scar is so bad , I had so much pain around and under the scar , my foot was swollen like a pillow for a long time , many many times cried and saddened by the look of my foot . I guess one of the huge reason ladies tend to do the surgery for bunion is the improve the look of it , not doubling the ugliness . He needs to master on closing the incision and be more humble to accept to learn it . I've been two Dr. Masternick on two occassions. The first time was for a plantar fasciitis. My experience was excellent. Dr. M was attentive and took his time to listen to my symptoms. He gave me multiple options of treatment and the plus and minuses of each one. I found him very thorough and really easy to talk to. He wasn't in a rush that you find in most doctor offices today. As a result, my fasciitis quickly disappeared. Recently, I had a problem with my left foot. Having a great first time experience, I went back to Dr. M. He quickly diagnosed my problem and again gave me my options. This time he was more adamant about which treatments would give me a positive result. I choose to go with what he thought best and opted for surgery. Now my foot is fully functional again...whew! You are always nervous anytime you have surgery, but everything went as Dr. M explained. II think it's rare these days to find a doctor who takes the time to explain things in a clear and concise manner. I should have written a review after one of my two visits to him but I didn't. I'm inspired write today because Dr. Masternick did a simple act of kindness that was unexpected and warmed my heart. I was grocery shopping and had just pulled my car up to grab my bags from the cart left at the curb. Dr. Masternick happened to be walking into the store, recognized me through my car window (which is amazing unto itself - how many doctors would actually recognize a patient after only 2 visits which were probably a year or more apart?), and stopped to help me load my bags. Just a simple act of kindness that took me by surprise but seems consistent with his personality. Which leads to comment on him as a doctor. Although my medical issues are not complex, Dr. Masternick was patient, relaxed, and took his time explaining everything to me. I've gotten so accustomed to feeling rushed when I see a medical professional that some old fashioned treatment is noteworthy! I went to Dr. Masternick for a 3rd opinion after 2 other doctors wanted me to have surgery to repair a split tendon. Dr. Masternick's approach was to first try physical therapy before deciding on surgery - and the it worked. I am no longer in pain and can once again walk with no problems. Dr. Masternick is the first and only doctor who treated my Hallux rigidus without fusing the big toe joint. Instead he fused the joint farther up the foot so after the long recovery of a foot fusion, I was able to return to running. I have no idea why other doctor's aren't familiar with this alternative for active people. In addition, he's very honest and didn't make empty promises like several other doctors did about all of my pain going away post surgery. The pain is very manageable and at some point, I will have him do the other foot. In addition, his staff is super friendly and helpful and I like that he has super early appointments so I don't need to take time off of work. read more

He did great work to help me with a foot ulcer in the wound care office at INOVA Fair Oaks and I continue to see him at the Reston office for checkups on a Charcot foot injury from a few years ago.
