Papusas
Ben D.

Great local spot for Pupusas can't wait to try the rest of the menu. I got two pork and two bean and cheese. Both were fresh tasting and savory. The pork has the most flavor. Service was nice and friendly was pretty quick. I got it to go and it was ready when I got there. Inside has plenty seats and tables for people and at the front is a big to go counter.

Good pupusas! Came here with a friend for lunch and there's a lot of seating inside. The employees got the food out very fast. I got their Pupusas de Chicharron y Queso and they were great! Loved it with the cabbage and the salsa. They come out so hot, fresh, and cheesy. They really hit the spot.

A very tasty Salvadoran restaurant in Mt Pleasant! I was really blown away by the flavors of the pupusas, although the plates were a little lackluster. The steak could have been slightly more tender, for instance. This was a very tasty place and I would encourage you to eat this food--but most likely do take out. We had a very unpleasant experience in the restaurant when an argument erupted between the workers and some Mt Pleasant locals who appeared to be panhandling inside the restaurant. It was not handled quickly or quietly, which made the experience quite unpleasant for all.

Stepped into this place randomly to escape the rain and if definitely felt like a local's spot and the pricing was also reasonable. The pupusa was simple and had great proportions of filling and breading. The steak plate was also great and hit the spot on a rainy day. You order at the counter and the find a seat. The vibes were very casual and a lot of families were there. I think I would pop in again if nearby, but wouldn't travel out of my way to chase this place. Still chasing my favorite pupusa place!

My boyfriend swears by this place since he works nearby, so on an abnormal trip in this direction we stopped by to a crowded lunch service. The kitchen was swamped, but I got a handful of pupusas and my boyfriend got some platter. This is not the place for you if you're uncomfortable with crowds or people hanging with their kids. The food itself was solid--you can't go wrong with pupusas. I got an horchata that also hit the spot. I'm not gonna sit here and say you should wait in a long line just for pupusas, but if the line is reasonable...you should totally stay and order pupusas.

Let me start off my saying... THE WAIT IS WORTH IT!! I was introduced to Ercilias from a friend whose been coming here for over 10 years. The food is delicious and coming from someone who was raised on pupusas this is a must try! The tacos are delicious, the tortillas are homemade. The pupusas are "rellenas" perfectly with fresh ingredients. If you don't try anything else, get the revueltas and an agua de Marañón. The horchata is so good too but it's not the same as Mexican horchata. Trust me, 1000 times better! Staff is nice. Yes they take forever and they stay busy but its worth it. The place is small and you kinda have to grab a table if you have luck one is open! Must try!

The margaritas are so good, you need to be careful not to drink them too fast haha. My favorites were the peach margarita and the tamarindo one. However, the mint and cucumber one was super refreshing, and if you're feeling adventurous I recommend trying one of the jalapeño ones! It is spicy though. My friend couldn't handle it and that's why I ended up drinking it. It was really good! The ambience is great too. I ordered three chicken and cheese pupusas, and they were a great size. I was nearly full after the first two. The flavor was on point. My apologies for my photo because I was already halfway through my third pupusa before I remembered to snap a picture. I also tried the corn tamale, which my wife and I enjoyed a lot. On top of that, I ordered a steak taco, which unfortunately didn't make it into a picture either because I ate it too fast. What stood out to me was the "shell." Instead of the usual flour or corn tortilla, it uses the same masa dough as the pupusa, and I really enjoyed that difference. We finished our meal with the nuegados en miel dulce, something I had never tried before. I was glad I did because it was delicious and a great way to end the meal. Overall, the food and experience were excellent. If you are like me and rely on Yelp reviews to decide where to eat, I highly recommend giving La Casita Pupuseria & Market a visit. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.
