I wasn't looking to do a review for the Michigan Ear Institute, but was looking up the number for…read moremy wife and saw it was only receiving 4/5 stars? I read one review about Dr. Laroue (now retired from the MEI) and felt like I needed to set some things straight. I have been a patient of the Michigan Ear Institute for over 20 years. As a competitive high school and college swimmer, I suffered from multiple ear infections. My family doctor couldn't solve most of them and as a swimmer I didn't like to stay out of the water for many of them to fully heal. In my late 20's I started to experience significant earring loss. After being referred to the MEI, I was told the three bones holding up my ear drum had fused together and were eroding from the chronic ear infections. I had about a 45% loss in my right ear, as a high school teacher I couldn't hear my students and surgery was my best chance of getting my hearing back. Doctor Laroue was my surgeon and was fantastic throughout the entire process. He explained the process beforehand, answered hard questions and performed the complicated surgery to remove the failing bones and replace them with prosthetic bones. The recovery was hard, but I healed well. The incision was made behind the ear in the fold, it is hardly noticeable today. After bandages and packing was removed, I had my hearing tested again. I got back about 25-30% of my hearing. I was able to resume teaching and coaching without hearing problems. I was still able to swim and scuba dive. When I started to have problems again with my ear, about 15 years later, I reconnected with Doctor Laroue at the MEI. He was able to perform a second surgery on my ear to remove material that was growing behind the ear drum. I wasn't thrilled to have another surgery on my right ear, but Doctor Laroue did an excellent job removing the skin cells from the area and getting the ear back to normal. The recovery wasn't as bad as before, but my days of swimming without ear plugs are now over. I am currently seeing Dr. Zappia at the MEI for ongoing check ups and routine ear cleaning. He has been very patient with me and has also done an excellent job helping me to manage my ears/hearing. I would highly recommend the Michigan Ear Institute to anyone who needs an expert to help them solve a hearing or ear problem. Sincerely, Jeremy

When I advised him that the procedure hurt, he told me "you're fine, just relax" while continuing with the procedure. I gagged while pushing his hand away, again telling him the procedure hurt. He ignored me and continued until I begin to cry... That's when he stopped. He was very rude and condescending while talking to me; basically advising that I did not know what was going on with my own body because he's the doctor and he knows best. When I advised him that I needed a doctor's note for a few days off of work since my condition was preventing me from working he told me "No, I'm not giving you a doctor's note because there's nothing wrong with you. You're fine." He refused to listen to anything I and constantly talked over me. When did it become okay to speak to a patient in this manner!? He is completely unprofessional when other colleagues are not around to witness his behavior. HE WILL NEVER RECEIVE MY BUSINESS AGAIN.

This joke of a Doctor sent my mother-in-law for tests for hearing loss, one of which was an MRI…read more She cleared her without even getting the test results as she cleared her the same visit she ordered the tests and suggested she get a hearing aid. My mother-in-law also complained of vision abnormalities and severe headaches which she ignored completely. The MRI showed a LARGE BRAIN ANEURYSM. The only reason she knew about it was because she went on MyChart to get her test results because the Doctor would not call her back and the office staff isn't allowed to give any information regarding the results. A week after the results were available she still hasn't called back and she has called the doctor twice a day all week with no success. She had an appointment yesterday with her pcp and showed him her test results and he told her this was extremely dangerous because of the size and location and to go to the office and demand to speak to her immediately or go to the ER because she was so high risk of a stroke or bleeding out if it ruptured. On the day of her appointment she had to wait over an hour and a half to see the doctor. This is totally unacceptable. She shouldn't be a doctor if this is how concerned she is about her patients. If anything happens to my mother-in-law you can bet I will sue this joke of a "doctor " for everything she's got. I would also go after her medical license. I'm fairly certain that I can find many others with similar experiences. If this has happened to you and damage has been done to you or your loved one and need someone to help with your case to give testimony with this type of experience feel free to contact me via kadhcb@aol.com or Facebook. Kendall Daniel-Brown of Garden City. This woman should lose her medical license!

I have a fairly stressful life, and Dr. Shindler suggested that I give it a go to help relieve stress. Well after my first session, I was driving home, hit a TON of traffic on I-275, and it didn't bother me in the least. It was the strangest feeling in the world - like someone took my mean friend away, and I didn't realize how mean that little guy was until he was gone. I have had reflexology in the past, and thought, "sure this is a nice foot massage", but that is not what reflexology is in the least when you're with Ruth. It's just amazing, amazing work. She's passionate, perceptive, kind, and so so much more. I really don't have enough good words to say about Ruth. Give her a try, and you'll try to hunt me down to thank me for making your life awesome. Dr. Shindler is also awesome. He's very easy to talk to, and is open to different ways of healing, including hypnosis. I did hypnosis once, and he will make a recording of the session for you to do at home. This also helped me reduce stress levels - but obviously you can use hypnotism to help with a lot of different issues. Overall, there aren't enough words to express how thankful I am that this office is here... we so quickly brush off things like stress, and other life stuffs, and how they play a role in our health. Nice to see a doctor's office understand.
