When it comes to family parks, what do you want? Swings? Slides? A bike track? A place for the kids…read moreto run around? A flying fox? Toilets? Shady areas? BBQs? What...?? And you want a water feature too?? Seems someone is practising a bit of wishful thinking.... or.... they have been to Steel Park. If you are looking for a place to have a picnic with the kids, then this is it. You should know however that it is not perfect. The playground is not fenced off. The kids can access the river. The water feature has a lot of stone (which is not soft if kids fall on it). Finally.. if you did not know about the water feature and come here with children, no matter what you tell them, they will be a sopping wet mess by the time it is time to go home. All is all... so long as you actually pay attention to your child and supervise what they are doing (I know know I am likely asking far too much here), then they will have a blast, and the person "minding" all of the stuff at the picnic mat (as they read their book and sun bake a little) will also be able to relax a little. Need I say more. Check this place out. Still to find an awesome cafe in spitting distance, but you'll survive. I did... :-)

This indoor playground is part of an indoor sports centre for cricket and soccer. During the day…read moreone of the courts is filled with push cars, slippery dips, padded cushions and a jumping castle. It is only for preschoolers as well. The court has netting from floor to ceiling with only one escape point. There is also a child proof gate barring the outside world to the littlies plus some adults confused by a top pull lock. The cafe is called Mickey's and has reasonably priced snacks. The coffee is nice with a complimentary bickie. It is easy to sit for over an hour while the kids just play. Finding the place and parking can be an issue but worth the effort

Not knowing a great deal about this park, when I arrived I was amazed to see the play area with the shiny slippery slides, climbing areas and massive swings. This is an awesome park. While some parts of it still seem under development, and there is a real lack of shade areas, this has to be one of the best play areas I have seen in Sydney. If your kids can not have fun here they are simply not trying hard enough. While it appeared there was a tonne of parking available, on the weekend you are going to find it challenging. As for what to bring when you come, if you have a bike, bring it as there is a huge bike track to check out. If you don't have one, you can rent one ( http://frid.co/qSpPMO ). Of course if you want to chill out and relax, perhaps with a coffee, then head to either the Armory Wharf Cafe or the Armory Wharf Canteen ( http://frid.co/nKLbIw - which is only open on weekends and public holidays). Alternatively you could grab one of the benches near the free BBQ hot plates and cook up a couple of snags. If you are looking for the perfect place to have a kids birthday party, this might be it! You just might not want to do it on the weekend...

To add to all the attraction is the flying fox. From an elevated wooden plank about 1.5 meters tall, kids sit on a disk attached to an overhead cable. They're never more than about one metre off the ground as they fly forward around 25 meters and rebound back. There is always a queue of kids for this. As the park is located adjacent to the airport - it's a joy to watch all the kids get excited about the planes taking off and scream with pleasure. There is a huge barbeque area and also a bike path. I really like going to this park - oh yes I forgot to mention the ice-cream man who adds to all the fun.

The next step up is the toddler area for children under the age of 4 and it's a mini version of the big play area, with little slippery dips and a small jumping castle to keep younger ones entertained. There's also a Muffin Break located within the playentre. It was stocked with a variety of fresh food options for both adults and kids - some healthy and some treats.
