I was actually sent to Enigma through another amazing piercing shop-- specifically because of the type of piercing I was requesting (triangle piercing). I'm truly grateful for such a kind and professional redirection-- because the piercing is an uncommon request and very anatomy dependent. I'm really glad my piercer at Enigma, Didier, was able to take their time to not only perform it, but also communicate what he was looking for to be able to do so successfully. Didier talked me through appropriate anatomy requirements for it, gave me a mirror to show how he'd like to position the piercing ideally, discussed jewelery options/possible adjustments to the bar to accommodate healing he'd like to do (if needed), and even mentioned common issues he'd like to avoid that are run into when piercers try to manipulate the area and how such can make the piercing difficult to do/accomplish appropriately. He also thoughtfully kept checking in with me while he was making preparations (sterilizing, PPE, etc.) to make sure to answer any questions and ease any feelings of anxiety. Brought my daughter here for her first piercings. We had an appointment with Franceska and she was so amazing with my daughter. She explained the full process to her as it was happening to help ease her anxiety. The place was clean and very relaxing. The two ladies who helped us check in were also super sweet with my kid and answered all of her questions regarding the piercings and options. I saw that maybe the biggest complaint was the price, honestly, while it was pricey, it was worth it. I know we got a quality product, highly hiegenic, and well done (by a professional). Review for 2 separate visits with 2 practitioners. TLDR: Evan and Ken are ethical piercers and want you to have piercings that are best for your body. For my daughter's 18th birthday, she wanted her navel pierced. I selected "any practitioner" for the appointment, and when we arrived she was seen by Ken. Ken felt she might have issues healing based on her anatomy, so she chose to get 3rd earrings in gold, which she adores. Since she was still REALLY wanting that navel piercing, she found online a couple other possibilities - lower navel, etc. We made an appointment with Evan, who we've seen multiple times before (Evan did her second earrings and her sister's piercings as well). Evan is such a compassionate person, he showed her the challenges with piercing her navel and explained it in such a kind way, making sure she understood that it's nothing at all wrong, just that everyone has a different navel, and that ultimately she wouldn't be happy with it. She ended up having a helix piercing which she's really happy with. I appreciate that both Ken and Evan wouldn't just do whatever piercing she asked for and hope for the best. Evan is the BEST! I believe he only works this location on Saturdays, and he's at the Adams Ave location on other days. I normally don't like driving in PB, and I especially dislike driving (and parking) through the mess that PB becomes on the weekends, but I will venture out here on Saturdays to have work done by him, as the other location is even less convenient for me LOL. Dropped by for a downsize and was very impressed with Evan's cheery attitude and steady hands. There was absolutely no jostling or pain on my still-healing piercing. He actually did my forward helix a few months ago as well, and that was also a very positive experience despite the experience of getting that piercing being a bit more painful. I think he's good at making people feel comfortable about asking questions, and I never feel judged or embarrassed about speaking up. This piercing studio remains my favorite in SD, spotlessly clean with cool decor. Shout out to the person at the front desk for always being very friendly and welcoming as well (I really need to get her name..). Had a fantastic and thoughtful technician in Josh. I have been contemplating an auricle and anti-tragus for just under a year, and haven't been pierced since I was in my teens (remember Bedazzled in the Mall?). Navigating their booking platform was seamless and I was able to add notes, which made the sign in process go smoothly. Josh looked at my inspiration photos and kindly informed me of what was (and was not) possible with the anatomy of my ears. We settled on a helix and a standard tragus. The staff was also very professional and warm, explaining the process, materials, and pricing for my jewelry. Josh took the time to explain the healing process which he went through very thoroughly, and made conversation to settle my nerves. We mocked up the locations with a sharpie and then resterilized my ears. He guided me through how to "breath" through the piercing process. Having given birth to 2 children, this was familiar and relaxing. After each piercing Josh expeditiously installed the jewelry and I was done! The only place in San Diego you should go to for a piercing ! They are experienced , safe and clean! They will not pierce you depending on placement if they don't think it's safe. Made my appointment here online for a nose piercing. I kept this place in mind because one of my friends came here years back and I thought it was a professional and clean spot when I went with her. The time I went they required you to wear a mask while inside. It's a smaller store but have a lot of options to choose from. The girl who pierced my nose was really nice and made me feel calm when I was getting my nose pierced. It didn't even hurt and I was happy there was no pain. I went in to get my tragus piercing switched out to different jewelry. I picked a tiny pyramid to go there. However, I asked multiple times if they thought it was too small for the gauge of the hole and if it would slide out. I was told we wouldn't know until it was in my ear. After the piecer put it in my ear he did not make any comments about it. Less then 24 hours later the piercing is doing exactly what I was concerned about. I called the shop and asked to get it switched upon which I was offered a "free" titanium yellow diamond that retails for $20..... I paid $120 for the solid gold earring that sinks through my hole. They would not give me anything of equal value. As a piercer you should know what is okay for certain piercings. Isn't that the job? I should have been told (especially after I voiced concern multiple times to both people in the shop). Not cool. And definitely not going back there. I'd highly recommend Embelish down the street. read more

I've been going here for about 15 years now and they've always been top notch. This time I needed a nose ring put back in ( medical test had me remove it once again) and I decided to get my other nostril repierced ( it's been over 10 years). From the moment I walked in, as always, they were awesome, and I actually went with a good nostril ring and a nose stud in my new piercing. The guy, Christopher, was really sweet and the piercing went really well! I only had the sinus ( eye watering) reaction, no pain! This was the same way it was when Evan did them over a decade ago there. It's been two days since and there's been no swelling or pain, period!! Either I'm Godlike( pllhhh) or these guys know what they're doing. Make the appointment and go if you're looking for getting anything pierced, jewelry change, etc. These guys and Apogee in OB ( haven't been there since my bridge piercing in 2014 though) are the best, won't go anywhere else and over the last 25 years I've had almost eveeything on my face pierced ( all are gone now except the nostrils though) including my ears streteched and these are the only two shops that I go to, recommend, and trust. They only use titanium and silver or gold, it can be expensive but you are paying for the quality, and I've seen people ranging from soccer/yoga moms to senior women as well in their shop and all are treated with care and respect. They know their anatomy and explain things as well, prior to the piercing. Honestly, you can't go wrong, you will be treated respectfully here and it WILL be worth your time, the proof will be in the piercing and the satisfaction. I've seen Evan at both this location and the La Jolla location. I had been having problems with my daith piercing done at another shop through the initial COVID19 lockdown. He gave me really good advice and a time to return if I was still struggling. Ultimately I had to abandon the piercing, so he removed my piercing and pierced my second earlobe at the same time. The shop is impeccably clean and he uses clean drapes for all piercings. Evan is certified with the Association of Professional Piercers and has the most up to date knowledge of safe piercing practices. Can't recommend Engima enough, and definitely see Evan if you're going to go. I'll be back to have my daith repierced next year when it's healed and ready to try again. read more

Leaving a review for a piercing done in January. I booked an appointment along with a friend. I got a conch and he got a cartilage piercing. The front desk was very patient and kind throughout the jewelry selection process. We'd arrived quite early and had plenty of time to select and compare studs for our piercings. The disappointment came during the actual piercing itself. We both were pierced by Erika and we could tell she was a little more impatient and not as friendly as other piercers we've gone to. That's all well and fine. It was until the first pass of my piercing, where the initial line went through scar tissue of a neighboring piercing that Erika got really passive aggressive with me. She said she didn't notice the scar tissue upon first glance and because I've already got so many ear piercings (besides the one I got done at Enigma I have about 20 others) she'd have guessed I'm good at healing them but it doesn't seem so because my cartilage is the "gnarliest piercing she's seen in X amount of years piercing". Blow to ego aside, I felt humiliated and confused. I don't understand why any professional would say this to a client. This type of feedback isn't constructive or value-adding at all. Regardless, I still left that day with a conch piercing done; she went in a different area that didn't go through scar tissue. I do wish her bedside manner was better though. All in all, everyone has their own style; Erika's probably isn't mine. I don't see myself coming back again but would still recommend this place based on its cleanliness and portfolio with the caveat of my experience. read more

It's hit or miss if the receptionist is professional and welcoming. I dropped my rating to 3 stars to reflect how my experience was today. Decided on a whim to get my helix pierced on a Friday evening. I scheduled my appointment online and completed the required paperwork. Lou was my piercer and he did a great job at giving me the run down and aftercare instructions. He made it a comfortable environment and answered any questions I had. This location also has a lot of jewelry to choose from. They have beautiful solid gold options that are on the pricier side so I went with the standard titanium rhinestone and also purchased the saline spray from them. All in all just under $100. It's been 3 weeks and it's healing nicely - no pain, swelling, or redness. They offer/advise a 6 week follow-up appointment to check on the piercing and to change out the jewelry to a shorter post since most swelling should be gone by then. Came in to get my lobes re-pierced since I wanted a professional to handle it! Originally, I had my ears pierced when I was a toddler, but stopped wearing earrings over ten years ago which made me think they were closed. Booked appointment online, they have all the information there, and submitting the consent form will have them send you an email about healing and recovery. Very thorough and made me feel confident about the whole process. When I went in, the staff at register was very welcoming and friendly. Masks are required, but they had some disposable ones on the counter for you to take. They helped me pick out my jewelry and gave me recommendations on price range and sizes while also telling me that they sell earrings per piece, not by pair (the receipt will show backing, but the math is as they said ~$45 per earring). I picked out my earrings and got my ears handled by Lou! He actually told me that I may not need to have my lobes re-pierced because the holes could still be open. He stretched them out and put on my earrings for me. When I returned to the front desk, the cost was deducted because I didn't actually get my ears pierced. Apparently, this process of stretching out old piercing holes is called "recovery" which costed me $10 per lobe and was covered by the deposit I paid when booking the appointment. Overall, it was a good experience and I will be booking another appointment for ear piercings in the near future! read more

Man, I cannot say enough great things about my experience at Enigma. For context, this review is for my experience with getting my 11-year old daughter's ears pierced. Like many young girls, my daughter was extremely excited, but super nervous about getting her ears pierced. This was our fourth attempt- each of the previous ones at other establishments resulted in my daughter backing out of the endeavor. From the moment we walked in, the girl at the front desk assured my daughter that she wouldn't even feel it. As it came closer to the procedure, my girl started getting more and more nervous, and that's where Rubi came in. Rubi is AWESOME- no other way of putting it. She was so patient, so honest, and just made what I thought would be a dreadful experience, knowing my daughter's phobia of needles, into a memory that will last a lifetime. Wow. Just wow. First impression was a disaster. Lady immediately yelled at us to put masks on. I understand that covid has died down and masks are not mandated anymore, however this lady was very demonic in her demand on us wearing masks. I gave in to the BS and put on a dirty mask they had, dusty and made my nose stuffy. Regardless of the rudeness and mask manipulation, the customer service was non-existent, like she hated her job. I understand jobs can be stressful, but Jesus have some basic workplace skills! Anyway, if I could do negative stars I would, other than that, I highly recommend giving your business in places that are not braindead. Edit: They wouldn't let me watch and support my girlfriend through her piercing experience, she was scared and anxious, she wanted me to be there (regardless if you a hole employees think piercings are easy and painless to you!)
