There are certain household items I just do not like to buy at the big box stores and hardware stores: -Ice melt... This is the place to get it, and not just rock salt, but magnesium chloride (much less damage to concrete than other, cheaper, ice melt products). -Pest control - from boric acid to permethrin to bifenthrin - perfect for warding off household pests. -Weed control products - killing poison ivy has become a past-time in my neighborhood and SS has the products to do it. They also have a variety of farm needs and animal feeds, including food for domesticated animals. There have been times when they did not have what I was coming in for, but they went and got it and had it by the next day. That, my friends, is excellent customer service. I am glad to have these guys in town.

What I also like about this store is the knowledgeable staff. When it comes to pest control or what to buy for farming they really know their stuff. Southern States does have a bit of a downfall when it comes to plants as well as trees but how can a small business compete with Lowes. What one needs to know is when going to this store one should us Southern States for chemicals, seeds, and general gardening feeds as well as animal feeds. This particular store also carries some really good locally produced honey and some local candies. Finally the customer service is great and they always have staff willing to assist when one seems confused on what to buy.

On the plus side, the work done was fine and the convenience of having them pick up my lawn tractor for a reasonable price is great. In the past that would have been the end of the story and a 5 star rating. This time, however, the way business was conducted was not good. First the driver was several hours out of the window to pick up my machine. A quick phone call would have made that fine, I get that schedules get blown up all the time, just let me know when you are running behind. Then the drive picked up the machine without letting us know. Looked out the window and no lawn tractor. Took about 2-3 days to get a response to my messages so I knew that Quality and not some random thief had my tractor. Then the drop off was unannounced, just looked out and saw my tractor. No key. A month and a half later, I'm still waiting for my key. The only communication after the drop off was a bill that showed up a month and a half after the service saying that my account was over 30 days. Hard to pay a bill that you never got. If the driver had checked when dropping off, I'd have gladly paid on the spot. Now they seem to think I'm some kind of deadbeat. Plus, there doesn't appear to be any way to pay on line, so I have to go through the hassle of writing and mailing a check and they have to wait on USPS to deliver, when and if they get around to it.

The Toro website lists Aldrige as a certified Toro Service Center. Given this, I went today to look…read moreinto getting a Toro mower bag replaced. It had fallen apart at the seams after I had ordered it from a third party 5-6mo ago for residential mowing. The man at the store said he wouldn't consider facilitating the order for a replacement bag since I had not purchased it through him. He then stated that all Toro mower parts have a 1mo warranty. I asked him to clarify which of the two reasons he mentioned was the reason he wouldn't consider working with me. "I'm just going to lose money on this," he said. When I explained to him that no one was going to lose money, that I was looking to get a replacement bag through his service center, he countered by telling me that if he had to make a determination he would say that I had ripped the bag rather than it being defective. He said this without having looked at the mower bag. When I asked him why he was being rude he said, "why are you being rude to me?" It was, needless to say, a non-productive conversation. I called Toro afterward, who clarified that different products have different warranties, not one month warranties, and filed a complaint against him. Not only did he refuse to operate as a Toro Service Center, he was impolite, contradictory, and provided false information. I've lived in Durham most of my life, have great relationships with the guys at ACE, Stone Bros, and elsewhere, but you will never find me in this store again.
