My partner and I have been to Local Health Integrative Clinic several times to see their naturopath…read morepractitioners. They have a range of services (acupuncture, chiro, RMT's, RCC's, dietitian and osteopath) along with yoga and movement classes. Interesting that they've recently started a student naturopathic medicine community clinic ($10.00 to $50.00 sliding scale). Seen Dr. Wendy Romano for prolotherapy and trigger point injection therapy ($240.00 for 60 min, $150.00-$160.00 for 30 min) and cold laser therapy ($175.00 for 45 min, $115.00-$165.00 for follow-up). Depending on the area, you may have to pay additional fees. Treatments have been okay but are very subtle. My partner has seen Dr. Robyn Land for several gua sha facials ($130.00 for 45 min). During her last visit, the practitioner was late and only treated her for 30 minutes.

Today, I was very ill and sent an email at 0200 to advise I would not be able to make it. I pleaded my case and was told there was a charge and there was no flexibility around this. I found them to be inflexible and punitive. Should I have attended the appointment sick and pass it on to the practitioner? I felt they really didn't care and just wanted my money. I will never return to this clinic and will advise all my friends and family of this very unfortunate situation. I also had to cancel my dentist appointment and they did this without issue.

I can't say it's impossible to switch from a female identified to male identified practitioner but it can give one pause as it may not be your cuppa. I can report that the quality seemed up to par and I was warned that he 'goes deep'. I played my own music off of a familiar relaxation app that helps me get to my zone. Also pleased to report very sturdy tables re being welcoming to plus-size body types. Also multiple shoulder pillows were available for those needing extra chest-space. Best of all NO weird or uncomfortable comments ( as it should be but sadly often not the case). Some small talk led by whoever is on the table and a POC practitioner. All good. Next time I'll find a nuanced not quite so deep, as day two is pretty tender and I know I gotta DRINK MORE WATER!!

I was really hoping this would be a great new neighbourhood place to get massage. I was wrong…read more Upon arrival, the door was locked and a sign outside the clinic said to wait outside and someone would come get me. Thinking this was a normal COVID-19 thing, Because there was nowhere to sit I waited patiently standing on the sidewalk. The previous day, the clinic sent a COVID screening checklist that I submitted. While waiting outside I checked my email, and noticed another form to fill out, the intake form which was only sent 50 mins prior to my appt time. I filled out the mobile version of the intake form signing my name in the designated box, and I made sure it was submitted. Soon after I received the confirmation of consent the staff member opened the door and addressed me, while looking at an iPad, "I've been waiting for inside" This is already 10mins into my appointment time. As we entered (wearing my mask) the staff member said "the intake says draft so you have to do it again" as I filled it out, I completed the mandatory questions specific to my address, consent, and liability waiver. Because I have chronic pain, particularly in my hips I was in a fair bit of pain from standing I was grateful to get all the paperwork done so we could begin talking about why I came, and what kind of treatment I might benefit from. The staff member said "follow me" and then seemed to disappear down a long hallway, still looking at the iPad. Because the staff member was walking as fast as able-bodied people, I was unable to keep up. As we entered the treatment room the staff member said "oh you just skipped through it all" And while I made an assumption the staff member would complete required assessments through A conversation, it was clear they really needed me to type it all out in the form. That I got less than an hour before my appointment. At this point the staff member still hadn't said hello, how's your day or what brings you in today. At that point, after being confused about why I felt like I was doing everything wrong I decided to leave and not go through with the massage. The staff member was agreeable and told me they "hoped I have a happy life". My response was a recommendation to do some more trauma and violence informed training, in hopes of attempting safety and creating ease of access for other people. I don't write this to say the staff member is wrong or that you should never go to this clinic. I write this to bring some awareness to the experiences of others, and if it was this difficult for me (cisgender, queer, white, healthcare provider with chronic pain) it is probably even more difficult for others. Some ways this encounter could have been more equitable and trauma-informed: - saying hello or literally any other greeting when opening the door - It would have been helpful to have access to the intake form ahead of time, to ensure I had enough time to answer in ways the staff member was expecting, to prevent cutting into the valuable massage time - prioritizing the person and not the paperwork - get to know the ways your position of power and privilege impacts the clients you see (I had to sit down and allow myself to be treated this way, in order to have access to massage, which is an extra sensitive issue right now because of COVID-19 restrictions - both operationally and practice-wise) - be more transparent and clear about how to access your service, as smoothly as possible. And to end there may be other areas of the city you may not need to provide more trauma-informed or equitable care, but when gentrifying areas that are home to more marginalized communities it's helpful to have more care for the community you're serving. We. Know. Better.
