If I could give more stars, I would. Made a scary root canal an actual pleasant and pain-free experience.

Summary: EA performed an unnecessary procedure based on their exam. Recognizing their error, they said they would refund me, but to date only a partial refund has been received. I was referred to Endodontic Associates for a root canal and arrived for an exam and the procedure on June 10. The exam was quick but verified that a root canal was necessary. (I don't recall if they took new X-rays or used the ones from my dentist). Dr. Nielsen worked quickly but there wasn't enough time to complete the procedure, so I booked a second appointment three weeks later. On July 5 I came in to complete the procedure. Things went smoothly until the end, at which point Dr. Nielsen requested new X-rays to verify the work. He spent a while consulting the X-rays, looking at my tooth, and applying some sort of substance to it. Was something wrong? Indeed something was. He sat me up to have a chat. The bad news: Due to a compromised root, the tooth could not be salvaged. I had the choice of having them section the bad root from the tooth, which would definitely fail within a few years. Or I could have it extracted (elsewhere), in which case Dr. Nielsen told me the procedure would be refunded. Dr. Nielsen admitted with regret that the failure to recognize the compromised tooth was his and that it should have been noticed in the initial exam, stating several times that "I should have seen it on the X-ray, but sometimes you miss those things." On the way out the billing person confirmed that if the tooth was extracted that the procedure would be refunded. (She later claimed that I was told the refund would only be partial, though I don't remember this.) After consulting with my dentist, we agreed the tooth should be extracted and replaced with an implant, and he reached out to Endodontic Associates to notify them. Six weeks after the procedure, I received a refund check. However it covered only half the amount ($660 of $1290). I called Endodontic Associates and spoke to the bookkeeper, who stated the original fee had been "adjusted" as "Partial Endo Therapy." I stated that my understanding with Dr. Nielsen was that I would be refunded in full, as no partial refund was discussed with him. She informed me that I was mistaken. I requested the balance of the refund, and she said that she would discuss with Dr. Nielsen and call me back. That was a week ago and I have received neither check nor return phone call. I'm assuming that Endodontic Associates would just as soon be rid of me, and at this point the feeling is mutual. I received no value from the "partial endo therapy" (the exam was paid for separately) and the tooth they worked on is now in medical waste at an oral surgeon's office, so I'm unclear what my $600 and change is meant to be paying for. Giving two stars rather than one as Dr. Nielsen seems to have done good work in my mouth and was a compassionate care provider. read more

I received an incorrect diagnosis for a root canal that prevented me from getting speedy, quality dental care. I was charged $120 for the exam and the privilege of receiving inaccurate dental information. They do not have any way to pay for a bill online. They sent my bill to a collections agency that has not been accredited with the BBB. They did call me several times during the work day, in the middle of meetings, in an effort to collect on the bill. Working with their office was inconvenient, unpleasant, and an overall poor experience. Go literally anywhere else. read more

Had a root canal done yesterday.... Wow am I a whole new person! I had a crown done on the tooth a few weeks ago which inflamed the nerve and everything was SO sensitive. I was waking up in the middle of the night, couldn't put any sort of food or liquid on that side of my mouth, and any cold air that touched it would make it throb. SO painful!! I was referred to a different Endodontics company but after reading the not-so-good reviews, I looked for one myself and stumbled upon Endodontics Associates. I was walked through the potential cause, remedy and risks associated with a root canal and proceeded with confidence. Dr Broadsword took the time to make sure I was comfortable the entire appointment (further numbing when I could start to feel again) and ensured my bite with my temp crown was perfect before I left. Thought there is some residual tenderness on the tooth (to be expected), I feel 28393747% better. No more sensitivity to temperature changes in my mouth and it doesn't ache or throb anymore. I was a little nervous with the recent reviews on here, but I am SO glad I stuck to my gut and came to this office. I came here about a year ago for a root canal, the doctor was very nice but the front desk lady was very rude. I believe her name was Juanita. She had a horrible tone and her attitude was very off. I asked her to explain the procedure and the payment process, and she was clearly annoyed and you could just tell in the way she was speaking. For my next appointment, I had trouble finding parking so I called to let them know I might be a little late. She threatened to cancel my appointment in a very condescending tone. At my recent cleaning I was told by my primary dentist I needed to see an Endodontist to get a root canal. Eek! I have never had a root canal and had no idea what this would entail. The front desk folks at this office were organized, kind and professional and able to get me in quickly for a consult. I saw Dr. Broadsword and both he and his assistant were extremely kind, communicative, and personable. Although I ended up getting referred out again from this office for non-endo care, I can't express enough how much I appreciated the care and effort Dr. Broadsword put into reviewing my x-rays and creating a plan of care that would help me have the most success with my teeth. He spent time talking on the phone with me, listening to my concerns and even telling me new information about my teeth that is important to know for root care in the future. As others have stated here, they run a shady operation to deceive you into believing there will no out of pocket costs when that's not actually the case. I went to have work done at Kaiser Dental; due to not having any open appointments in a timely manner, they referred me to this office to be covered by Kaiser insurance. When I arrive, they tell me they will need an x-ray to fully understand the problem with my tooth. So, of course I agree, as x-rays do not usually entail out of pocket costs. They send me a few doors down to have the x-ray because they state they don't have one in that office. They failed to tell me that I would going to a completely different business to have this done. They also failed to convey that I would have to pay costs not covered by my insurance. They also told me that they would "be more inclined to pay the bill" if I agreed to accept their service for a root canal or extraction. It seems they have an agreement with the other endodontic office in the building to shadily send them unsuspecting customers to drum up business. ***UPDATE*** I called today to get an itemized bill, per Kaiser's request. I was then informed, only after asking for proof of this bill, that the charge had been written off and I no longer owe anything. I called Endodontic Associates on Monday around 11:30am after being referred to them by my dentist. I let them know that I was in pain, needed to be seen as soon as possible and that my dentist was sending my records over. I confirmed with my dentist that the records had been sent. 10am the following morning I had not heard back from them so I called again. They had not even looked at my records. The woman I spoke with said she would do it right then and call me back. She called me back 30 minutes later to tell me that the soonest appointment they had was 6 days out. I reiterated that I was in a lot of pain, had already waited a day and could not wait a week from my initial phone call to be seen. She said she would talk with the dentist and get back to me that day. She hoped they could find a way to fit me in. It is now nearly 4pm on WEDNESDAY and she has still not called me back. If appointment availability was an issue they should have been clear about that from the start. I would have looked for another doctor instead of spending two more days in pain. Similarly, if they are so busy they can't call patients back they should set realistic expectations about when they will follow up. If you need anything done with any sense of urgency, in my experience, this is not the place. If I could give no stars I would. read more

Dr Madden is good what he does, quick and effective. However very shady business practices ran at his office. Went in for a root canal 1,100 dollar with a 300 co pay. Before I leave I pay my balance and the was told I'm good there will no further actions required and to have a nice day. Turns out they miss led me acting like they where in my BCBS network when they where really in moda... so long story short I got a bill and they're trying to send me to collections now because all they care about is money and will lie to your face about. (If your office isn't in my network tell meeeee!) I needed an emergency procedure but wish I would have waited to go somewhere else. I get it, my money spends the same as insurance but jeez the total lack of ethics to get there is very concerning. I will not take my business to this practice and recommend going elsewhere with better business practice. read more

I can't recommend this clinic more highly, especially Dr. Benjamin Nielsen. I was having some minor soreness that my dentist couldn't figure out then it suddenly turned to severe pain. At that point, my dentist was pretty sure I needed a root canal. The first endodontist I was referred to did very little testing and immediately stated that I needed two root canals. He also didn't offer anything in the way of antibiotics or pain management. I didn't have a good feeling about it. Fortunately for me, he was booked solid for two weeks. I was in too much pain to wait that long, so I called my dentist's office and their terrific staff called around for me. They were able to get me in with Endodontic Associates within a few days. Dr. Benjamin Nielsen could not have been better. His testing and evaluation was much more extensive and he had much more sophisticated tools. He was able to narrow my issue down to just one tooth, not two, saving me expense and hassle. He also did a great job, he was very gentle, kind and professional. The novocaine wore off after about 30 minutes and I was able to carry on with my day. I've never such a great dental experience! If you ever need a root canal or dental surgery, this is the place!! read more

I have a high tolerance for pain, but my mother has scared me with missing teeth and12 root canals. She used to smile at us toothless at the dinner table. Talk about PTSD. I didn't have cavities until I moved to Oregon. Thank you for no flouride in the water which preserved my perfect teeth since childhood through college while in California. Anyway, a twice filled cavity led to a crack tooth and crown, in an effort to try to preserve the root I endured pain. After a couple months, I gave in to the endodontist. Dr. Neilsen and his assistant Carol were v. professional. I did have tears down my face as the dental dam and numbing took place more from clausterphobia, but knowing I have felt pain and am hard to get numb, he made sure I felt nothing before he started. A blanket and closed eyes, 45 min. later he was done. It was almost immediate relief and by the second day and a morning phone call from his office, I was estaticly thanking them. It is not cheap at $1100 a root canal and even with insurance, I know only 50% will be covered. They asked for a 20% down payment. All well worth it. I don't ever want to go back, which is what all patients say, but if I do, my anxiety is quelled. read more

He was friendly and compassionate but most importantly he was precise and very skilled in working on my tooth which had a piece of a dental instrument left in the canal for years....Not only did Dr Nielson do a thorough root canal, he spent time trying to remove the instrument, and while this meant I had to return for several visits, I was so grateful to have such a meticulous doctor. I have to return to him for a root canal on another tooth (it seems to be the year of teeth problems) and I am so grateful that Kaiser's referral was to him rather than another dental office. Oh no... The dreaded root canal. I have to admit, because of the stigma I'd put off getting mine for a bit longer than I should have. I'm typing this while still numb and I really don't get what is so scary to people! Well, they probably didn't have an excellent endodontist like Dr. Madden. He was very conscious of making me feel comfortable while educating me as he was going along- understanding the procedure made it more interesting than daunting! The procedure itself was a breeze. The only "pain" I experienced was just keeping my mouth open for around an hour-which Advil fixed right up. Everyone in the office was very warm and welcoming as well. I am very grateful for Dr. Madden's kindness and expertise. I went to Dr. Madden to obtain a second opinion for a tooth that was a bit of a mystery and that I had a hard time letting go of. He listened attentively to my explanation of the complications involved and the reasons behind my hesitation. He answered plenty of​ questions, thus demystifying the case. I subsequently tried to save that tooth, but it turned out that it was unsavable. It's rare for me to go out of my way to review a non-food related business yet I was so impressed with my recent experience at Endodontic Associates, I had to give them the respect they deserve. My first appointment was a consultation for a root canal, which is never a pleasant conversation. When I arrived, I was swiftly escorted to a room overlooking the city and had x-rays performed quickly. Seconds later, the doctor, Dr. Madden, came in and introduced himself with a handshake. It truly amazes me how many professionals in the health care industry don't perform this simple gesture. Here I am supposed to trust this person with my health and well-being and yet I don't even know their name or get to pronounce mine for them. So, fast forward to my actual root canal appointment. I was in and out of the office in 45 minutes. The good doctor and his assistant were efficient, courteous, professional and kind. Dr. Madden went over every single thing right before performing it, "You might feel slight pressure", "This looks scary, but it isn't" etc... I felt at ease and relaxed throughout my appointment, something you don't expect from going to the dentist, let alone having a root canal performed. They even called me the next day to make sure I was healing well, another rarity in the medical industry, and sent me a thank you letter with a handwritten note from the doctor. This dental office is amazing in every way! After very poor treatment at Williamette Dental, I called Endodontic Associates in tears about my very painful tooth hoping for some relief. The front desk associate got me in IMMEDIATELY (the very same afternoon!) and within an hour I was sitting in a dentist's chair. Dr. Paul Madden immediately began explaining how he would relieve my pain, and began the procedure. Through the whole experience, he and the hygienist explained every step, calmed my anxiety, and worked to help alleviate my pain. Dr. Madden even busted out the dad jokes to make me laugh, though I didn't feel like it at all. Two hours later, my tooth has been cleaned out and I will be finishing the procedure in few weeks. I was not charged an emergency fee, and the prices are extremely reasonable. Everyone in the office worked so hard to make me feel comfortable and cared for. I am so grateful for this office. I called in horrible pain, frustrated and upset, and a few hours later I am on my way to recovery! I recommend this office 100%! read more

Took my 11 year old daughter into see Dr. Neilson. She was very scared and afraid of the needle that would numb her. He made fun of her and was at times very stern and impatient. By far the worst dental experience I have ever witnessed. I'm sure he is a fabulous dentist but he should NOT be working with kids. When we realized she wasn't going to take the needle he threw it down on the tray with force and stormed out. We will NEVER go back there! Yes, she was scared but he made it ten times worse with his lack of empathy. The dental assistants were very nice and friendly and my daughter kept asking why they could not give her the shot instead of him. They also do not provide laughing gas. Really? Weird! read more

Disclaimer: most of my business with Dr Nielsen was several years ago, BUT: When my mouth basically went crazy, with five or six root canals within about twenty months, I was so grateful to be in the care of Dr Nielsen and his staff. They were patient and kind, and very compassionate about my hard-to-numb mouth. When it felt hopeless, and the costs far exceeded my pretty good dental insurance, they were exceedingly easy to work with. My wife urged me to visit a clinic nearer our house that was significantly less expensive. I quickly found out that the quality of care I had been receiving at Endodontic Associates was far above what other people were living with. All of a sudden the extra money-and it wasn't THAT MUCH of a difference-didn't matter. More recently, I went in with a sore tooth and a referral from my dentist (Dr. Richard Mercer, who is just down the hall, and also outstanding). Dr. Nielsen and his staff did an exam, and took a few more x-rays. He told me that he was perfectly willing to perform a root canal to try to ease the pain, but that in his professional judgment it might not be necessary. Would I prefer to wait a few days to see if the discomfort subsided? In this case, he was right. I was extremely impressed with his willingness to involve me in the decision making process, and his integrity regarding the whole situation. I highly recommend this clinic, and Dr. Nielsen in particular. They do a fantastic job of making an unpleasant situation tolerable and manageable. A class act! read more

Went in for an evaluation of an upper back tooth. My dentist had referred me, and I really thought I was going in for a root canal. Dr. Madden shook my hand, and he was professional and kind. He gave me a choice, but the bottom line was that I really didn't need this tooth, and he suggested an extraction, vs. root canal, and a crown. By taking the good doctor's advice, I avoided laying out an additional $1,821 (based on the estimates I was given.) I was escorted down the hallway to the oral surgeon's office and made an appointment. I really appreciated Dr. Madden's honesty. read more

She was compassionate, friendly and totally made me feel comfortable and at ease that I was in the RIGHT place! That was Xmas of 2011. Now, fast forward to Xmas 2012...Not sure WHY root canals for me are my presents to myself...but nonetheless, faced with another re-work of an old root canal, I wasn't able to see Dr Heward, but did get in to see Dr Ben Nielsen. I was referred to Endodontic Associates by my dentist for a potential root canal. They were able to get me in the same day, but not for 6 hours. Then, the doctor looked at me for 5 minutes, said there was nothing he could do and referred me to an oral surgeon and sent me on my way. I ended up going to another dentist for a second opinion and they said the tooth was fine and could be saved. I'm glad I got a second opinion! I would not recommend Endodontic Associates at all. They didn't seem to care enough to perform a thorough diagnosis. And to add insult to injury, they sent me a $121.00 bill...for a 5 minute exam and a misdiagnosis. If you're in need of an Endodontist (as I was yesterday) my heart goes out to you. BUT... rest at ease that the great folks at Endodontic Associates are there for you! After a weekend of being in some of the worst pain I've ever had to endure, Dr. Nielson, Chris and the whole team there had me back in business and feeling like my old self in no time. Professional and as warm and caring as you could ever ask for, the experience was much more pleasant than I had been led to believe from my limited research (and word of mouth). Root canal "treatment", more like a root canal extravaganza over at Endodontic Associates. It was clear to see that Dr. Nielsen has a real mastery of his craft. I was clearly explained what was going on, and other than a gentle pinch of the novacane shot, I didn't feel a single thing and was comfortable the whole time (roughly an hour maybe). In addition to the treatment itself, the appointment scheduled, prescription phoned in, insurance billed, note to work emailed off... all aspects covered seamlessly. Other than a bit of discomfort as the novacane wore off, after a couple more hours I felt like a million bucks and was almost saddened to be interested in eating something other than the Shamrock Shakes that had been flavorfully sustaining me for the last few days. I don't hope to be needing another root canal anytime real soon, but not concerned even a smidge about the prospect after my recent experience. Regarding dental experience-fine. BUT....my daughter was not informed by their staff that our insurance was accepted but they were out of network. AFTER they did her root canal and AFTER she left the office, they call to tell her she owes over $400 and this was not disclosed prior to her treatment. I called to make payment arrangements, the girl said the head office person would call me back. She supposedly did but I don't have any voicemail or missed calls from them. Then my husband had a stroke and is out of work for 6 weeks then my daughter gets a lette from a collection agency for the bill. I am a responsible citizen and had planned to pay this debt, but no contact and going thru stress with my husband I lost site of it. So when you go BE SURE they accept your ins, because they wont tell you but they have no problem sending you a HUGE bill after the fact. Taking advantage of young girls trying to make it on their own, is simply put WRONG!! Go see another honest dental office. read more
